Best way to "move" MSFS2020 to a bigger SSD

Featured Replies

Acronis would do this. I use it daily for work. Never had an issue.

I just moved my MSFS from a 500GB SSD to a 2TB M2 SSD.

After formatting the new F drive. I simply moved the main MSFS folders in the Steam Apps directory over to the new M2 drive and ran the MSFS installer via steam pointed at my new F: directory.

*IN MY CASE*

The Steam/MSFS installer automatically detected my official folders in the new drive so I just had to install all of the Official WU DLCs I could never fit on the old full 500GB drive.

Waa laa....MSFS started normally on the bigger 2TB drive and I can now install huge 10GB addon sceneries and every massive Official WU DLC without a space consumption care in the world!

Of course you also need to direct all your flight sim vendor apps (Contrail,ORBX,Simmarket) and anything else that's installed to C:(some external apps/tools) to installation paths to the new drive/MSFS executable as well.

How many times do we have to repeat this? Use the "Move" function in Windows.

Also, Steam can move the files for you if you want via the Steam app

If you are talking about using the Settings-Apps-select App-MOVE button, not all apps have this feature.  In my WIn10 install, this does not work for MSFS (I can see modify but greyed out, or, uninstall) - there is no move.  This is why you may find yourself repeating this instruction.

I'm aware that not all apps have that feature. But MSFS has. I'm at a loss why on your system it is greyed out.

I moved my installation to a dedicated drive just for MSFS with exactly this feature. That's why I keep repeating that no one needs to jump through any insane hoops ore redownload the whole thing.

This does not work for me...

When I click "move" I get an error message saying the move couldn't be done with error Code: 0x80073d0b.

Did you try converting your sim installation to modern instead of legacy before trying to move?

You can also move MSFS with the Xbox app. (Store version only I think)

I tried what you suggested and while I am able to choose the new drive under "Game Install Options" when I choose "Enable" under "Advanced Management Features" the only drive that shows is the one where MSFS2020 is currently installed...

That makes sense... this is separate from the Move.

You need to do the two in sequence.

1. Convert

2. Move

Yes, it makes sense.

But now I have another issue... I don't have enough space to do the conversion. It needs 157 GB free and I only have 37.

Meanwhile some folders were installed in my new drive (Program Files / WindowApps / Xbox Games) and I am unable to delete these folders.

I tried formatting the drive but those folders remain.

The move function was located in the add/remove programs so you would have the option to uninstall or modfy/move the installation (MS store) I had done this to move my installation from C to D. I do not know if the move option is available for steam users.

However .. My old installation was a day one MS Store installation. So if you are using the new xbox app installation i do not know if the move option is still available. I will check when i get home since i did a complete reinstall using the new style install option. ( Got tired of the encrypted file foolishness of the old installation)

Oh i see @Bert Pieke pretty showed the way and youre out of space. Seems like a wipe and reinstall is the next "safe option"
