SWS Van's RV8 and more...

Recommended Posts

I am patiently awaiting the new SWS RV-8 (also the 10 and 14) with the updated G3X from workingtitle.  I really hope people start to fly them again (and buy the RV8 as it will have analog and glass!)

I've been a little busy making some new paints for each of them (not being paid or anything just freeware on my own time)

Will anyone else be picking up the upcoming 8?

(render from my Adobe Substance Painter)

An RV10 paint I uploaded - needs that hot new G3X!!

And the RV14 I just finished today - which I've hacked in the new G3X into but can't wait for the real integrated SWS version 🙂

I've always loved the 14. The 10, not so much but I will definitely get the 8 as soon as it's out.

The 10 is a bit odd I agree.  It doesn't have that RV look imo.  I also enjoy the 14 and can't wait for the 8.  I really enjoyed the old Baytower RV7 for fsx.

I'm so with you on the new G3X appearing in more planes that use the old version soon!

Apart from the RV-10 and -14, also the Orbx Blackwing and Airfoillabs Bristell and others.  Cannot fly them with the old G3X in anymore, having tasted how much better the new version is.

Living in the Pacific Northwest, I have always been a fan of Van's aircraft.  I will download or purchase all when available.

The RV 8 will be a purchase for me. I have always considered it to be the "Fighter" of the Van's RV line.

I'm a real life RV8 owner, and a tester on the SWS RV8. These guys have done a stellar job. It flies and feels just like a real RV8. If you're a fan of RVs it's one you won't want to miss.

I probably will pick up the 8.  Who am I kidding of course I will.  But I'll be flying the JF Tomahawk mostly over the next week or two.  I'd love to paint it.

I just checked.  Adobe Substance Painter is expensive!  Wow!  $50 a month?

I paid a one time fee via Steam for 150.  It's 200 now though ugh.  You get product updates for the year you own it.  It still works after the year but no more updates.

You can use Blender as a free alternative.  If you get back into painting or are new to 3d we have a small discord channel where you can get help.

Otherwise I highly recommend starting with the C208 'air biscuit' repaint tutorial in blender.

I painted a little 15-20 years ago -- before I disappeared during the Sim Dark Ages (2009-2017) but back then I was using Photoshop and layers. etc.  With P3D I experimented with using GIMP or maybe a program called Paint.net but I can't remember.

I don't know a thing about 3D painting.  I think for my purposes Blender would be the way to go for now.  The RV8 might be a good one to play with for sure!  After the tutorial anyway.

With the paint kit that SWS has done, painting in 2D is still possible with this amazing bird.  Typically most new addons need 3d like blender or substance...  But SWS has made it possible to still paint in 2D.

Here's a little fancy red one I've just finished up (a render from substance of course)

Hey Ryan- what's with the RV-8 canopy... is there a way to make that more visible/realistic... doesn't look like Perspex atm... perhaps that's a SWS materials choice?

Love and appreciate your work- as ever.
