ActiveSky FS Released

I've noticed that in order for AS to connect, I always have to manually click on ActiveSkyUtils.exe in the addon folder in my C drive after booting up MSFS.  This .exe is excluded in my antivirus and I've removed all extra toolbar mods.

Isn't this .exe supposed to run automatically?  FWIW, I have MSFS (and AS itself) installed on my D drive, with this Appdata/Roaming/...addon folder in my C drive.  Not sure if that makes a difference.

Which addons folder? What does ActiveSkyUtils do? Is it in the AS folder in community?

I haven’t read through the whole manual. Yet. I’m a sitting duck saying this.

I think software that autostarts put an entry in exe.xml when installing.

And: which AS files should be excluded in AV?

I don't own AS but would be interesting if someone could provide a zoomed out snapshot from the sim that corresponds roughly to AS map area?  I bet they don't differ much

What do you mean, the area of the map in AS?, that is around 3,000 miles

What is this 'random' smoothing you talk of?

Those sprinkled dots between METAR bubbles. Howe can one really depict cloud map from the sum of human observation based data?

AS_FS.exe ist the main program with the UI. You start that manually either before or after the sim.

ActiveSkyUtils.exe connects to the sim. This should run automatically per an entry in the exe.xml. If there isn't an entry in the exe.xml something went wrong during installation. Make sure MSFS does not run during installation.

What's you point or rather what are you looking for?  The AS map is just for a general idea of the flight etc. It's just a basic item NOT to be used for flight planning or weather radar. You seem to expect it to do or show something that it is not designed to do. Perhaps, down the road, AS will provide a detailed radar map but until then - this is it.

And, you would lose your bet because in sim looks much better than the map.

I have seen this as well sporadically. To narrow this down: Was this the transition to the destination weather or somewhere in cruise?

In cruise.

Also, a good idea to restart your PC, shut off AV, then install it.

Are you serious? 🙂  Those "sprinkled dots" are airports, weather stations etc. Try zooming in and hover your mouse pointer over the dot and see what it says.

My question was specifically about turbulence in clouds which, looking at the text (thanks Allvega), it seems is not available in passive mode. Understandable as I’m guessing they can’t tell exactly where the clouds are when MSFS is managing them, but it’s kind of the last thing keeping me on the fence at the moment.

Will keep an eye on the development.

RealTurb has cloud turbulence and is - obviously - using the MSFS default weather. So it's technically possible. Also it's not about *where* the clouds are, but rather a simple "aircraft is in a cloud" status.
Since the both sites we both quoted are somehow contradicting, I think only Damian can give you a definitve answer about whether cloud turbs are in passive mode as of now.

I guess it could be technically possible to compare sim weather to AS map somehow. Maybe AS map could be zoomed in to  correspond to max zoomed out FS snapshot.

I was hoping users would be able to confirm.

Most users are probably using active depiction mode for the moment and can't answer the question for the passive mode.

First thing I did was select active mode and Realistic setting. It works great  , 8 hours so far flying the Fenix, and I love it. Even getting wind reports on audio, on approach.

Impressive. By tuning one of the COM frequencies?

Can’t wait to test AS, but that will have to wait as my daughter is playing Fortnite 😅

Check your exe.xml (...\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache) if there is an entry for Active Sky. If not, reinstall.

Thanks for the tip!  In my case uninstalling and then reinstalling both the connector and AS itself didn't create the correct entry in the exe.xml file (Steam user here).  So I thought "well if AS won't do it, maybe I can just manually put that entry in myself." I did, and now it successfully connects when booting up MSFS.

If anyone else runs into this issue (i.e., manually having to start 'ActiveSkyUtils.exe' for it to connect), this is what I did:

1) Ensure you have the 'ActiveSkyUtils.exe'.  Should be in C:\Users\(name)\AppData\Roaming\HiFi\AS_FS\AddonFolder

2) Navigate to your exe.xml file.  For Steam, it's here: C:\Users\(name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator

3) Open the the exe.xml file with notepad and add the following entry:

<Launch.Addon>
    <Name>Active Sky</Name>
    <Disabled>false</Disabled>
    <Path>C:\Users\(name)\AppData\Roaming\HiFi\AS_FS\AddonFolder\ActiveSkyUtils.exe</Path>
  </Launch.Addon>

Note the line above bracketed by 'path' should be one line (it's just wrapping here in this post). Save the file of course.

Thanks again RALF!
