we had better contrails in FS9

Featured Replies

contrails in FS9 persisted in the sky the traffic impacted the look of the sky

there is no excuse they can't do that in MSFS

performance ? just use a low res 2d sprite from far away we won't notice anything

Indeed, I bought SimFX almost exclusively because of the contrails.

They've still got some Partners announcements to come before release, like the team ups with Henrik & his boats plus Puffin We Love VFR mods then maybe they'll join forces with SimFX.

There's a few areas that could do with a bit of TLC and plane effects in the base game is one such area.

Pico Neo3 Link VR - Windows 11 64bit, Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite Mobo, i7-10700KF CPU, Gigabyte RX 9070 XT OC 16gb (AMD GPU), 32gig Corsair 3600mhz RAM, SSD x2 + M.2 SSD 1tb x1

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

Contrails in MSFS seem to be tied to what altitude your aircraft is at.  If you're not at a certain altitude the whole sim has no contrails which is different than FS sims before.  This and AI aircraft in the sim are the two areas that are inferior to sims of old.  No mention of a fix in MSFS 2024 either (no one in the community brought these things up in the convention)...😔

True, there are quite a lot of little things like this though.  Not always enough time to mention them all.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

The AI problem is huge.  Asobo promised us they'd have AI aircraft addressed a long time ago.  Live traffic was supposed to have the real-world models and airline liveries associated with them.  That's all but been forgotten.  Contrails was something I noticed a while ago, which is to your point but no one has mentioned it that I can remember until this thread.😶

FSLTL has some great AI, and it's free.

I see plenty of contrails when parked on the ground, so it is unlikely to be tied to ones own altitude. Perhaps it depends on graphics settings, and possibly the AI aicraft models.

Aren't contrials dependent on altitude and temperature of the air, usually starting at the low to mid 30,000s?

In the real world, contrails are not a “given” on any particular day or time. It depends on the temperature and humidity aloft. I am located in the US northeast. FlightRadar24 shows there is a lot of airline traffic passing overhead right now at altitudes between FL250 and FL390 and not a single one of those aircraft is leaving any kind of contrail whatsoever. The sky is pure blue. It is probably because the temperatures aloft right now are quite warm - generally ISA +15 (or more) according to Foreflight.

Other days, visible contrails form, but dissipate very quickly - they are only visible for a few moments, and only close to the aircraft generating them.

Still other days contrails form and persist for many minutes or even hours. It all depends on the state of the upper atmosphere.

I don’t know if MSFS uses actual weather conditions at high altitude (from MeteoBlue) to control whether contrails form, or how persistent they are.

I don’t use AI, but I do fly on VATSIM, and I do regularly see persistent contrails generated by other VATSIM user aircraft, both when looking up from the ground, and when flying at high altitude.

They never promised 2020 would have that by default. However if you do have any of the AI traffic model packs (FSLTL, AIG etc) default Live traffic will use those models and liveries when the data matches.

Jorg said he'd like to do it by default, but getting permission to use liveries is a pain in the bottom.

He also a few years ago they've had a bunch of AI models done, but no liveries to put on them, and if you loose closely, the 2024 trailer did show us some AI 777s.

Yes, that's right.  However, there used to be a really weird bug that contrails of other jets only showed if you were travelling at contrail height yourself and generating your own contrail.  Not sure if that has been solved.

I see contrails and only fly low & slow so I'd say that bug is long time fixed.

The immersion software package seems quite picky about which conditions are needed to show contrails and etc.
