Current consensus - Active Sky vs Default Weather

Featured Replies

I have used long time now AS in passive mode. Yesterday I decided to give it a chance with the latest beta. It was a short trip, about one hour. Terrible.... One time there were solid nice overcast layer below me and then, in a few seconds, clear skies. And then clouds were building again in front of me. I landed in a pretty nice weather, few clouds there and there and as I was taxiing to my gate, it was raining. Now I´m thinking about uninstalling the hold AS from my computer. Very disappointed about my purchase.

Active Sky adds another sense and feeling of atmospheric depth to the visuals of the sim especially in VR . I can't fly without it now.

  • Not really. Default weather engine can produce some very nice cloudscapes. There is absolutely no way you get this with activesky. And I definitely did not see the sky filled with CU clouds only

  • Do you like Coca-Cola or Pepsi? Apple or Android smartphones? Ferrari or McLaren? You'll receive many subjective opinions (mine included) and many of these won't match what your own preferences a

Most likely an add-on is triggering those refreshes...

Well, that is the thing, and I have received the same comment from the official forum. I got nothing else than Rex Accuseason installed. And of course airport sceneries which I select or deselect with the Addonlinker. But nothing weather related add-ons. And I have excluded AS from my Microsoft Defender.

These are all CU clouds. There *are* no other cloud types in MSFS default.

In my opinion this is how MSFS20 depicts the clouds, and I like it. I can't see classic CU clouds there.

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

Point was, that they don't look all the same, which these screenshots nicely demonstrate. ActiveSky is also just arranging CU clouds in different ways, densities and so on to achive what it achieves.

Your settings are likely borked. Make sure to

A) Have the "clone weather" feature set to TRUE (this will prevent you being in the middle of a transition while landing, which is what you experienced as "few clouds, then suddenly rain")
B) Make sure to have a flightplan loaded in ActiveSky (otherwise destination weather will be interpolated instead of true to the metar)
C) Have a depiction smoothing rate of e.g. 25. This will mean a full clear->overcast (and viceversa) transition takes about 13 minutes (instead of seconds as you said). Transitions should not be visible with this setting.

If you still have near-instant transitions there's indeed something else going on, which is not normal.

Sure, they have different sizes and altitudes and maybe densitiy, yes. It *looks* good in many cases, I absolutely agree.
The question is if that's enough for you or if you are bothered by the fact that it's nowhere realistic since in real life stratus and cirrus clouds are much more common. IIRC CU clouds are only the 3rd most frequent cloud type in real life. The cloudscapes with ASFS just look more realistic and varied and not as "videogame-like", but it comes down to personal preference which is just fine. Me personally I'm using ASFS because of the historical weather.

I was just saying that technically these are all the same cloud type just with different sizes.

Well there you go, you're using a beta that could be a bit broken, try going back to public release and see if the same happens.

Exactly. No diversity of clouds, everything has looked the same for years. No matter the countless videos or photos shared on social networks and forums, everything looks the same. Just visually repetitive.I have encountered all the scenarios in these meteorological photos above, them hundreds of times. Very good for casual players.

So glad Active Sky came along to save me from these huge scripts.

I have been using AS and it can produce some great weather, I’ve enjoyed it a great deal but….lately I’ve returned to using the default live weather more and more.

I live on the south west peninsula of the UK and whilst I like to dabble in airliners, I do a great deal of VFR flying around my local area. Our weather is dominated by that transition between ocean and land and the prevailing winds from the west mean fronts continuously roll into us.

For my use Active Sky just can’t provide the approaching weather fronts I can look out on or some the subtleties of live weather that MSFS default provides.

Both MS and AS have their shortcomings. For my own use case it’s evident they’re less in the sims own live weather.

Did you put a flightplan into Activesky?  If you do, transitions will be almost invisible.

Yes, I have used flight plan with the AS. I just downgraded my AS to a latest official build and will use recommendations given. Will do a test flight and see how it goes.

CU (AKA MSFS' only cloud type), ST and CI. CU and ST have further subtypes (flat or round IIRC).
