  • Fear of change probably😁 Personally I never noticed a difference compared to my time with W10.

  • I've been using W11 since launch, doesn't feel any different from 10 to me.

  • Bobsk8 - 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 I think Bob has an alarm set up for every time somebody mentions Windows 11 so he can yet again insist that most people are agin' it 😁

After applying some tweaking tools, then Windows may refuse to install a new feature update. And if someone does lots of these tweaks they might forget what or in what order they changed. And then be unable to remove the changes. And then they can only do quality updates on their system, but never again feature updates. Some people did this deliberately, if they prefer to not have major updates (feature updates).

Although installing from scratch is always recommended, pushing an in-place Windows 10-11 upgrade to endpoints has been almost painless for the MSP I work for. A Windows 7/8 to 10  upgrade was rarely attempted.

There is hardly any difference to performance or the user experience (some ask how to move the Start button back to the left corner.)

Windows 10 is end-of-life October '25 so you can hang on until then.

My only issue was I had a computer crash several months back. I already upgraded from Win10 to 11 so having to figure that out was a nightmare for reinstall. Next time (next computer build) I will be happy to have a from-scratch Win11.

And no, Bob, Windows 11 is fantastic otherwise. Hardly any issues, bugs or anything wrong remotely with it.

I really like Win11. Maybe like good whiskey, it’s an acquired taste. IMO. Regardless, it is a super stable and solid OS.

Tweaking the interface with 3rd party software slows your system down, uses system resources and usually messes with the Windows Registry. Potentially introduces vulnerabilities and other software issues. Surely you want to save system resources for flying rather? In other words, quicker boot times, more FPS and less stutters.

Things that were lost to me, or made difficult in Windows 11:

Ability to move the taskbar.

Ability to resize the length of the taskbar.

Ability to 100% completely hide the taskbar.

Ability to drag a folder onto the taskbar.

Ability to resize the height  taskbar.

Loss of features in file explorer.

Ability to right click on desktop and see "New Rich Text Document" in the menu choices.

Sensible windows 10 context menus (especially in file explorer)

The colors, transparencies, shading, icon size, font size of/on the taskbar.

The ability to put a toolbar on the taskbar.

---

The bottom one (toolbar) is the one I miss the most. It was possible in Windows 7 through 10. I miss it every time I boot up windows.

(Most of these issues can be resolved with a $10 addon called Start11 from Stardock. I have used it for many years without issues. (It used to be called Start 7, and then Start8, Start10. Now Start11).

There are other apps that do fixes, but if you forget which and in what order you installed them, then Windows yearly update (features updates) might hang and not be able to install.  And you might not know how to fix it. The Stardock apps are easily removable without issues.

Toolbars: I used to put all my MSFS stuff onto a toolbar (which parks on the taskbar). To know where absolutely everything related to MSFS on my computer is and to keep them all well organized. I now use a folder on the taskbar for that. I posted in Avsim msfs2020 Tips how to put a folder onto the taskbar in windows 11. (You could just drag them onto the taskbar in windows 10).

Windows 11 was designed to look more slick then 10, and it does. But I prefer the usefulness of Windows 10.

Did you install from scratch or upgraded? If you upgraded were there any problems using MSFS? I get notice from MS to upgrade from 10 to 11.

I upgraded from windows 10 to windows 11. I did not install from scratch. Win 11 worked perfectly and did not reduce performance in MSFS.

But I don't like it. For instance, I hardly ever want to create a .txt file. I create .rtf files instead because you can can add images (.png, jpg) and blue URL links that opens a browser tab when you click on them. You can paste those things right in with the text.

windows 10: right click desktop has a New Rich Text Document in the context menu. Microsoft probably wants to promote MS Word instead of .rtf files. They removed the option.

Yeah, true. I meant wrong as in bugs. However, it does have odd quirks I still dont like .... like the start panel or right clicking requires more steps to get to your preffered settings etc.

I wish MS would allow us to make some changes without messing with the reggedit.
