I’ll be waiting for benchmarks.  I primarily bought a 4080 because I was impatient waiting for a 4090 to be in stock.  I’ve since regretted that decision and multiple times have contemplated buying a 4090 and selling my 4080 (as recently as tonight haha).

With the 5000 cards on the horizon, I’m trying to avoid being impatient again (notice a theme? 😀) and waiting to see how the 5090vs 5080 vs 4090 stack up.

I will say though, the rumoured 5090 prices are eye watering when converted to Canadian dollars, and the Canadian dollar is at risk of dropping further if the economic impact of the next US administration is as significant as some are predicting.

I just sold my 4090 on Craigslist for more than I paid for it … odd, didn’t expect it to sell, was more of an experiment but someone wanted it and I had to make good since I advertised it at $2300.  Is there something I don’t know about regarding 4090 GPUs … are they selling elsewhere for higher?  I bit confused.

I still have my 3090, 4070Ti Super, and AMD 7900XTX which all perform reasonably well under TAA at 4K, but at SSAA 4K and they suffer (but so did the 4090).  SSAA is still the best AA option for image quality, not a fan of TAA.  Most other AA options seem to be focused on FPS rather than image quality because the GPUs just can’t support SSAA very well … there is no equal visual quality substitution for 8X SSAA at any resolution.

A small portion of the problem is that nVidia stops making current cards so anyone looking to do a new build will only have future card options when the 5000 series is released. Even though the 4000 cards work perfect for MSFS. So if you are thinking of building a computer in the next two years and are happy with what the 4090 offers, when the 5000 is released, keep an eye out for inventory levels of the 4090.

Both AMD and NVidia clear their stock of old GPUs by stopping manufacture before the next series. Only GPUs still in stock at retailers will be left. You are likely to see 4090s secondhand being sold by some who must have the fastest GPU no matter what.

We are just weeks away from AMD and NVidia releasing the real specs of the new GPUs at CES. Then testers will be able give out the real performance benchmarks as soon as the embargo is lifted.

Why would you?

You could buy the latest and fastest CPU for half that price and see a much bigger improvement!

How about a 4090 for less than $600 the 5070. A 5080 will blow the the 4090 away $999, And twice the 4090 for $1.999 the 5090.

While I can’t imagine 5090’s will be easy to find for the first while, hopefully it’s not as bad / prolonged as it was with 4090’s which I think was partially due to post COVID supply change issues?

With the specs and price now confirmed I’m looking to get my hands on one when I can.

I'm calling it now, ALL the first early 50x0's will be sniped and scalped.

Here's hoping retailers will have methods to prevent this.

Average Joe gamer will have a hard time actually buying any of these for retail price.

I think availability will depend on how well the 5090 does hashes per second relative to ASIC.  If ASIC is still much faster then GPU availability will be entirely defined by nVidia “interest” (or not) and how much of a profit margin they want to provide to resellers.  If the 5090 is close or better than ASIC, then Crypto-Criminals will get them for the next 6-12 months and the 5090 will not be available to other revenue streams.

Using video cards for crypto mining is so 2019. The issue now is reduced supply since most silicon can be used in AI accelerators at a much higher margin.
