Dude, get some glasses. It's more than trees. It's the also the vegetation, rocks, dirt, etc.  What does trees, vegetation, rocks, dirt, etc equal to?  It's the whole terrain that's vastly improved at ground level in MSFS 2024.

You do know what "terrain" is, right?

Forgive me, I'm just trying to work out why people are saying 2024 is head and shoulders above 2020 visually and you're telling me that the trees, rocks and dirt make it so. Not a very strong argument is it? I mean, it would need to be a drastic change in visuals to make it seem like 2024 was worth the furore. I think telling someone who flys thousands of feet up in the air that the latest sim is miles better visually because they upgraded dirt, is a little silly. Can we be honest here and just say there isnt much difference between the 2 sims?

I don't want to sound critical here, but......couldn't you get almost exactly the same level of detail/lighting/immersion in MSFS 2020? If not, can someone enlighten me as to what is different in that

The clouds have improved in MSFS 2024, including cirrus clouds in live weather. Light also passes through the clouds differently in MSFS 2024.  The lighting is also improved in MSFS 2024.

  • At 30K+ feet, what is most noticeable (for me) in terms of visual depiction improvements over 2020 (that are non-trivial): environmental lighting (big improvement... and that makes sense since

In my previous comment, I literally mention that if you are a bush flyer, a helicopter flyer, or a low level flyer in general,  there is a huge difference between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024.

I also mention that if you are flying at 30K feet all the time, there won't be a huge difference:

Having said that, if you fly at 30K feet in the air, MSFS 2024 may be slightly better than MSFS 2020, but not way, way, better. The graphics differences between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 is mostly at the ground level, not at 30K feet in the air.

TLDR:

Bush flyer, helicopter flyer, low level flyer -> MSFS 2024 is great

Airliner flyer at 30K feet -> MSFS 2024 is not as huge as an improvement over MSFS 2020

And FYI, not everybody is flying 30K feet in the air. There are a lot of bush flyers, helicopter flyers, and low level flyers in general, and they are also using flight simulators but they enjoy flying close to the ground.

You're not the only poster who has mentioned the clear jump in visual quality between the sims, you wont be the last either. Because 2024 has been such a dumpster fire of a release, people will tell themselves anything to make it sting less.

I'm sure both sims look fantastic when you're running it with the best cpu and a 5090 with everything on Ultra, but for those trying to convince everyone that 2024 has broken the mold when it comes to graphics, just stop.

Oh I get it. You are one of those airliner users only, and bush flying is not "flight simulation" to you.  Only flying airliners at 30K feet is flight simulation to you.  Yeah, you are that type of person:

Maybe you should ask yourself if you are okay. You come across as rather snobbish if bush flying doesn't qualify as flight simulation to you, and only flying airliners at 30K is considered flight simulation.

@MrBitstFlyer made a great video recently of 2024 and I was so free to take some screenshots of the same scenes in 2020. I think you will find out which one is the newer even when I don't put a label on it:

MSFS y:

If one of the two is not head and shoulders above the other, how would you call it?

Here are two more:

If you can point to where I said bush flying doesnt qualify, please? I love bush flying, I just recently completed the TourDeFrance 2023 legs in a Cessna. Fantastic it was.

Dont be so quick to judge people or completely make stuff up, it makes you look foolish.

So you agree bush flying is a part of flight simulation, but that an improvement in terrain isn't important for bush flying?

Doesn't an improvement in terrain benefit bush flyers?

Are you using an add-on that affects clouds like Active Sky or some other add-on?

I never get the clouds that you are getting in your photo, and I watch a lot of live streamers of MSFS 2024 and I haven't seen the clouds in your photo on their streams either.

Well, everything underneath that layer looked great but yeah, above, looks like weird little cotton balls and most all about the same size.  No addons that would impact clouds per se.  I use a few sharpening tools but DISABLED the Details Filter and other sharpeners to no effect on this.

I'm running both sims maxed and while I do see the improvements which are substantial a lot of that is when you up very close to objects like trees and other vegetation and it's very appealing overall.  I let myself crash into the mountains behind Santa Barbara CA and was amazed at the detail on the ground.  But for me, it's not exactly where I would wish detail to be in a flight sim.  I'd farther rather see that put into cloud depiction.  That being said super quality cloud depiction with the current volumetric rendering is apparently so performance intensive it's not really within the realm of possibility at this point time, or so is my take.  But not all is required to be right on top of something to notice the changes.  At KDEN where I live in 2020 the Front Range from a distance really looks weak in 2020 compared to 2024, in terms of detail.  All of this being said, and I'm only 15 days or so into 2024, if I had to throw one sim out and keep only one, it would be 2020 absolutely.  Not just for fully mature compatibility and overall maturity, but it's really excellent even compared to 2024 and performance is better in 2020...that would be compared to where I'm wanting to config 2024 so as to access these detail improvements.  That is my opinion on Day 15 or so and I expect it will change as I get more familiar with 2024.

@fsiscool definitely a noticeable improvement in those shots.  2 questions

1.  Where is that 🙂

2.  Is there any way to see that same location at 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 30,000 feet for example?  Not trying to be difficult but the difference down low is indeed noticeable, undeniable but I would also love to see the same comparisons at altitude.  It would help discern if the benefits are as evident if you aren't right down almost at ground level...

Would be cool to have those two side by side at multiple altitudes as well.

At least personally for me I would like to see the same comparison with those shots as a starting reference because I can clearly see the difference especially in shot 1 v 2

Around Queenstown NZ

This is the first scene:

The second is down the valley to the shore of Lake Wakatipu.

The approach into Queenstown by airliner btw is quite scenic and certainly something for tubefliers to enjoy in MSFS 2024.

I rarely noticed the voxel grid in 2020, but I really noticed it during stormy conditions with lightning.

Okay here's another person experiencing this to some degree.  What antialiasing method are you using?
