I don't want to sound critical here, but......couldn't you get almost exactly the same level of detail/lighting/immersion in MSFS 2020? If not, can someone enlighten me as to what is different in that

The clouds have improved in MSFS 2024, including cirrus clouds in live weather. Light also passes through the clouds differently in MSFS 2024.  The lighting is also improved in MSFS 2024.

  • At 30K+ feet, what is most noticeable (for me) in terms of visual depiction improvements over 2020 (that are non-trivial): environmental lighting (big improvement... and that makes sense since

Speaking of amazing graphics...

I decided to let the Longitude crash into the mountains behind Santa Barbara CA as BATC decided to send me, in a Longitude, to Rwy15L at KSBA.  I wanted to see the outcome of the crash there and I was so struck by the incredible detail in all of the vegetation around the plane crash.  The potential issue is this:  I'll never see this kind of detail in my use of the sim.  So....is all of this detail being processed, even though in effect it's not really being accessed?  If so, what sliders can be dialed back to recoup some of this processing cost without noticing loss of areas that indeed will matter?  I mean, even GA flight don't get you down into the ground where you can see this LOD.

System:  9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL  64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync.

Aircraft used in MSFS 2024:  Fenix A320,  Aerosoft CRJ, FBW, WT 787X, I-Fly 737 MAX 8, Citation Longitude.

I positioned the external camera on the ground once, and was amazed to see individual blades of grass. It's pretty impressive.

I think dialing back various sliders can lower the level of detail and recapture some performance, but I haven't needed to do that. (Locked at 60 FPS.) The performance drops that I see seem to be related to streaming, not related to the cost of objects in VRAM. As is the case with everything flight sim, YMMV.

No, not really. This is what LOD is for. As you get closer and closer, it loads in more and more detailed scenery. If they were loading that level of detail for everything you can see from 5000 ft or whatever, you would likely get 1-3 fps.

The various LOD sliders kinda set a maximum level, but the sim can and will drop LODs below that as needed. All this happens more or less seamlessly.

If you are happy with your performance (and you have a high-end system, I can't imagine you aren't getting 4k 60fps), don't worry about it.

I've seen similar clouds without ASFS so it might well be default.

Amazing video!  The immersion is next level!

What I love about these videos with all these people who can afford top end PCs, is that I may not be able to have these graphics with my current PC. But I know that in a few years, when new graphics cards and new CPUs come out, and they are just as powerful as the hardware used for the OP's video's, they will be much cheaper in a few years (ie. NVidia 6070 in a few years could be as powerful as the NVidia 5090 now, but the NVidia 6070 will be much cheaper when it comes out).

MSFS 2024 just has to show us what is possible with today's high end PC.  And in time, almost all of us will be able to produce the same graphics in the future, when new hardware comes out that is equal in power to the top end hardware today, but at a much cheaper price.

Yes, MSFS 2024 has some bugs, especially with career mode. But those bugs will be fixed. And you can see how the MSFS team is constantly pushing all areas of flight simulation, from graphics, to physics, to the atmosphere, etc.

Great video!  Looking at the landing, I wish the PAPI's were a bit more emissive.  If Asobo have no appetite to change them (they were the same in 2020) it is a shame we cant tweak them ourselves like we used to be able to in FSX / P3D.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

Very nice, and I see he’s utilising lossless scaling to achieve 200FPS. Now’s that’s smooth.

I don't want to sound critical here, but......couldn't you get almost exactly the same level of detail/lighting/immersion in MSFS 2020? If not, can someone enlighten me as to what is different in that video compared to MSFS 2020? I am genuinely curious.

I thought this when I saw the first MSFS , but bought it anyway not expecting it to look anything like the videos I was seeing, for me with my GTX1070. Then found, with just a RAM upgrade, I could run it on full ultra settings, albeit at 1080p resolution.

I've more recently upgraded my GPU to a RTX4070 Super. The only real difference is I can now run it in native 4K, so it looks better in that regards. I can also run it in VR with my Quest 3 (main reason I upgraded).

I'm looking forward to MSFS 2024. As it's properly developed for modern multi-threaded hardware, I probably could have got away with my GTX1070 (the devs did say, if you can run 2020 on your current hardware, you can definitely run 2024).

Although, as Seb said a long time ago, you only need 30FPS for smoothness, so long as it's a stable 30. My locked 30FPS looks perfectly smooth to me.

Yup. I was very happy to get a solid 30fps in fsx 10 years ago in 4k on 2 monitors with my trusty 1080 (the 4090 of its time).

Nothing more immersion killing than a fast slideshow to remind you you're not actually there at all but watching multiple static images in a row simulating movement.
