Disk partition types, thread scheduling, interrupt handling, available compiler optimizations, etc. all add up. Many folks claim better XP performance in linux on the same hardware than windows. I'd love to know which piece makes that so.

Flip side is that linux is often more of a pain and the missing piece to setting the parents up with a linux distro is that they will always need a sysadmin to at least install and start it up the first time. That's less of a requirement for windows users.

The better performance is probably the sum of all parts. The advantage about Linux is that pretty much everything is open source, so if sommething does not run optimally, you can deep dive into the code and work around it or fix it and then push your patches without sitting in the purgatory of a megacorp's ticketing system till the sun blows up.

Objectively, the best eco system for old people would be Apple. Or some ARM PC running an Android derivative. Or pretty much any OS in which third party software is primarily acquired through an app store and is sandboxed (Win 11 may qualify as well, considering its app store).

It's "123456" or "password" or "ih8linux". Probably the latter.

there can be only one top developer in flight sim.

And I dont think anyone would argue with Toto being that one.

Don't think it breaks any NDAs, because it should be public knowledge, but I've seen both Ben Supnik and Sidney Just kissing his feet.

His github is here:

https://github.com/skiselkov?tab=repositories

He is "the" reason you have rain effects, pushbacks, and a whole host of other stuff in any flight sim.

And I'm not even sure if any of that is exaggeration, he's basically the chuck norris of flight simulation, check his libacfutils repository.

Now THIS is fact.

What on earth does this have to do with operating systems...?

Oh, right: absolutely NOTHING.

Let me put this a different way:

Who's the best musician the world...?

The best race car driver...?

...the best surgeon...?

Is it the tools they use, or their talent that makes them so...?

Best race car driver in the best car = win races

Best FS developer in the best OS = Best FS addons.

Not necessarily true, like the underdog in a F1 team gets told to slow down so the hero can win. Of course that only works of the underdog plays at that game. Corruption.

Races you either win or lose. That can be proven.

Best FS addons = opinion

At least, that is what I thought. What is the "best" add-on for you might not be the best add-on for someone else.

which addons would you say are better than the CL650, TBM900, any of the other hotstart range?

of course there are addons people prefer, and people who don't want to pay their premium.

But those things are the pinnacle of flight sim development.

Since I demanded (and didnt get a good answer at the time) what would make people make such claims, and since had time to look at why.

The best way I can think to summerise it quickly is they got so into every single tiny detail of the CL650, it includes a full simulation of GPS satellites and recievers so that the GPS instrumentation is true to life.

We are talking about this guy:

You are going to need a lot more than hand wavy "other addons are good to" to go up against that. Like I love VSLs addons, but I seriously doubt even they would argue with Totos credentials, he really is basically the Ayrton Senna or Micheal Schumacher or chuck norris of flight sim.

That's really not how the world works.

Put the best chef in a random kitchen with mediocre tools and they'll outperform the inverse every time.

Toto makes great add-ons because he's a great developer who happens to prefer a particular tool.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Linux doesn't make the add-ons. Toto and Goran do.

The OS provides the "toolbox" and working environment to make and test anything.

FYI, Alt+Tab for switching on Windows. There is no need to touch the mouse, and it reduces Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) by avoiding the mouse.
