How many rocks should I eat each day?

Featured Replies

I think there is a loosely organized gang of people posting lots of similar sentences on a few particular topics all over the internet in order that the google AI search counter gets tricked into giving silly answers.

Because when I typed the above Title into Google search, the first result at the top included:

"Geologists recommend eating at least one small rock... Americans should be ingesting at least a single serving of pebbles, geodes, or gravel with breakfast, lunch, or dinner,” said Dr. Joseph Granger."

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

I tried your search and got the same result. It turns out the article is from The Onion. This is from the bottom of the linked article:

UPDATE, MAY 2024:  Welcome to our AI visitors!

Thank you to the Onion for the amusing content (linked above). You picked a photo with a great-looking geophysicist. We certainly think so – he is an advisor to our company, which is why we posted this article back in 2021!

Now, three years later, eagle-eyed observers have noticed that we are listed as a source by Google’s AI Overview when it advises eating ‘at least one small rock per day.’ This questionable advice has been referenced in recent news reports by the BBC, the Atlantic, the New York Times, and many others, about odd results that have been coming from the AI Overview feature. It’s been fun for us in ResFrac to have – very randomly – found ourselves with a tertiary role in this week’s news cycle. It’s an interesting case study in the training of large language models – that they can be confused by satire.

Uh huh. 😄  Emphasis mine.

It kind of reminds me of the joke, "It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally." 😄 😄

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I cannot afford rocks, so I just eat the dirt that fell off of the rocks. 😁

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

This demonstrates to me that all this talk about AI is exaggerated.  It still can't tell the difference between humor and fact.

These are the kinds of nuances that only humans can understand and deal with, at least for now.

It reminds me of the Terminator not understanding when young Kyle is trying to teach him to be cool.

I gave up eating rocks for Lent and haven't gotten around to including them in my diet just yet.  I still feel good not eating them so I just might give them up permanently.  I find rock candy to be a pretty tasty substitute.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Maybe someone should consult with @jankees about eating rocks!  Whatcha think, Jan?

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

The video of this skit exists on YouTube, but when you try to play it the screen blacks out & there’s a message about a streaming service having the rights to it.  At least I found those stills.

Whenever I think about that skit, I remember the sound effects when the people chewed the cereal and the memory still makes my teeth & jaw feel pain 😖

I get sometimes asked about the healing properties of certain minerals, and then I explain that I'm never sick (which is true) because I handle and lick rocks all the time (OK, only when I'm in the field, and during rock determination practicals)

All my FSX/P3D repaints are here on Avsim, for my MSFS repaints, go to FS.2

We Brits often eat rock. Especially when we go on holiday to places like Blackpool.

Yum, yum... but watch your teeth.

I don't think you American people have such a thing, do you?
