Folders to delete and rebuild each update

Featured Replies

Not long ago I saw it recommended to delete a couple of folders and let them be rebuilt for each update to the sim. I cannot find the reference to the thread that explained that. Could someone remind me what folders to delete and rebuild with each update to keep things clean?

Thanks .......

I use these:

Disable Shader cache in Nvidia Control panel, otherwise all the shaders wont be cleaned.

Nvidia Shader Cache locations:
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\D3DSCache
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\NVIDIA\GLCache
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\NVIDIA\PerDriverVersion\GLCache
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\NVIDIA\ComputeCache
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\NVIDIA\PerDriverVersion\DXCache
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\NVIDIA\PerDriverVersion\GLCache
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\NVIDIA\DXCache
- C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\NVIDIA\GLCache

There is no need to delete or rebuild any folders, unless you have problems. I never did it and my sim runs great.

None.

This deleting things to keep stuff clean is OCD nothing more.

Agreed. It's just maximum voodoo.

The only thing I delete is the scenery indexes, because Asobo recommends. Other than that I just rename my community folder before the update, so nothing get interferes with. Never had any issues so far.

Not to keep clean but avoid issues. I had issues with the sim earlier this year after an update and found the formula that worked for me:

  • Clear Scenery Index
  • Clear Cache
  • Clear Streamed Packages
  • Reboot

Doing this after Beta/Stable updates has helped me avoid the issues I see people post here after a new build goes live. May not be needed for everyone but if someone has issues, doesn't hurt to try.

I want to know who "recommends" this voodoo. I have never touched any of these folders. And I had/have no issues starting/playing/installing addons previously in MSFS 2020 and now in MSFS 2024.

This is not doubt true when it comes to cache clearing, etc., but it's also true for virtually everything else that the human mind can imagine. And that's the problem with the Internet in general; so much of what is out there is fiction and so little is fact.

I'm guessing that the software engineers who build these amazing graphics engines are smart enough to anticipate the possibility of out-of-date caches requiring attention when system updates are issued. They don't need my help.
