What don't I understand about ATC?

Featured Replies

Isn't ATC being overhauled at the moment? It is a "bit" of a mess, but there's some progress nonetheless. In the SU2 beta, I've noticed that the flow of the AI voices has been significantly improved, although there are still some pauses in the wrong places, lengthy delays between communications, etc.

At the same time, the ATC menu is totally bugged for me. I can't seem to get more than two lines of choices to display at the same time, the logic gets stuck in "taxi to parking" mode, runway selection prior to announcing taxi does not work, and so on. With so much being broken, I assume there is a lot of work ongoing, so I'm cautiously optimistic, especially since WT have reportedly been tasked with improving this area of the sim.

When using default ATC in FS 2024, I fetch my SimBrief'd flightplan to the EFB, fill the PERF page, and strive to get it as close as possible to the SimBrief OFP, but then when for instance flying teh Citation CJ4, try to set the cruise ALT to the SiBrief FPL it sticks to something like FL 143 and doesn't let me change it ... no way 😕

My recommendation is to stay away from default ATC. It has been broken for months. It was never that good, just good enough for simple vfr. Today, ATC for both sims, is useless!

It's better to get SI Intentions for VFR ops. Check out this video:

They are even unable to fix the ATC window to make it show the last communication or not cut in half the last menu item, do you think there is any hope they will fix the ATC after 6 years of nonsense?

I don't think so.

The ATC window actually got worse in recent betas, so I hope they're tinkering with it and may fix it at some point... Yeah, I know...

BTW, don't try to expand/resize the menu, it will shrink from 3.5 to 2.5 lines then 😉

If you're unaware of what is supposed to happen, vs what happens, you're probably happy.  And that's totally fine.  But if we're basing MSFS ATC off of real world procedures, it's quite far from reality.

I don't see that as the issue.  Most of us do not expect default ATC to be realistic.  I remember FSX having some default functionality that more or less lined you up with a runway, maintained some sort of separation (with issues), etc.  It was far from perfect, but you could usually expect it to get you from takeoff to landing.  Right now, you can't even expect that in 2024.  I'm seeing crossing runways used simultaneously, aircraft taking off and landing simultaneously, and even the same runway being used in both directions at once.

I'll be 5 miles from the airport in a DA-40, and ATC will ask me to climb to 14,000 and send me on some random vector, never to talk to me again.  The problem isn't realism, the problem is the ATC just doesn't work on any basic level.  I was on final and watching an airliner taxi and take off right in my face.  There's no collisions, so you can ignore it, but I've seriously had some "jump scares" with airliners doing crazy things.

These things seem to be getting worse as well, not better.  Feels like we're going backwards.

I agree.

Fsx would at least vector me into an ILS (if there was terrain maybe not lol) but it worked okay.

I haven't tried ATC in 2024.recently though.  I think for VFR stuff it seemed to be okay-ish.  But for IFR....eh...no haha

Sure they are able--they just haven't.  I think it's possible they will dedicate resources to improve ATC but with several others people are already immersed in the urgency dies down presumably.
