What don't I understand about ATC?

The more I try to use ATC - the more confused and frustrated I become

Took off from a forest service airstrip in the C182 and made a short VFR flight to McCall, Idaho (KMYL).  About a mile from the airport I tried to contact ATIS but the only option given me by ATC was to contact  Salt Lake Center and the only option there was Flight Following.   I then tried to contact KMYL tower or ground but again, all I could do was call Salt Lake center.

On the ramp ready to taxi at KOLM but when I try to reach ATIS the only option I see is to contact Tower for takeoff clearance.  I really would like a wind report but cannot find a way to see it.

Setting up for the ILS 28R at KMYF but the only ATC option is to contact ground at KMYF - I could find no way to contact approach or tower.

Flying into KSEE airspace and I terminate flight following but ATC then only allows me to contact SoCal approach and then the only option is to request Flight Following.

Am I totally word not allowed or confused about ATC (understood it very well in 2020) or is there something amiss in 2024?

"word not allowed" was word not allowed - is self admitted ignorance no longer permitted?

KMYL doesn't have a control tower, so you aren't going to get an ATIS or any control services there. The others should have services available, but if you are using default scenery, I wouldn't be surprised if Asobo left out most of those frequencies.

It's just AVSIM and their feel good language filter. "This is a family friendly community"

Yeah lots of 13 year old kids who need protecting from words among the average flightsimmers who are male and above 49....

MSFS ATC is worthless.

If you fly airliners BATC is reasonable.  If you fly GA like me you're SOL.

You need a third party ATC to get anything out of this in sim.   I personally like a program called FSHud, although I  am dipping into SayIntentions too.

2024 ATC is completely unreliable.  I pretty much just go VFR and ignore it and fly my own approach.  They either completely lose you on approach and send you on an endless vector, or have you climb close to the airport for no reason.  I never expect out of the box ATC to be super realistic, but it just doesn't work.

Combine it with the insane default AI aircraft, and I end up just turning it all off.  They clear me to land runway 9, only for me to come face to face with a jetliner taking off 27.  Fortunately there's no collisions with AI, but I've had some moments that made me jump.

Agreed that the default ATC is not good - and worse than 2020 in the little while I used it. I use BATC and am very happy so far. Yes, this has bugs and all, but at least you can do a full flight 95% of the time with no issues. Certainly much better than default.

Then folks like me come along and say 2024 ATC is perfectly fine.  Why is that?

It depends on what you expect from it I would imagine.

Try Say Intentions. I have both BATC and Say Intentions and find myself using Say Intentions more lately. I'm liking it a lot and I mostly fly GA.

Did you try actually putting in the frequencies from these airports? I'd be curious to see if that worked. Just because it's not in the ATC menu doesn't necessarily mean they don't work
I had this same issue flying in the new Hawaiian scenery flying into PHJR, John Rogers Field, but I never got around to try out just putting in the frequency ...ATIS: 119.8.

I'll have to try it myself.

If you're unaware of what is supposed to happen, vs what happens, you're probably happy.  And that's totally fine.  But if we're basing MSFS ATC off of real world procedures, it's quite far from reality.

You hit the nail on the head.  Real world ATC is as unexciting as flying a tubeliner to me.
