New SU 3 downloadable feature in MSFS 2024 is a game changer

Mesh? Photogrammetry? Aerials?

I think so, and weather.

I assume if you can download all your airports and the aircraft you fly that this should now be pretty similar to 2020.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

I've just seen a post on the official forums from someone who said the sim takes a lot longer to load as it takes longer to activate the packages. Then there is the whole update aspect - do you stream up to date versions or download them and then wait for them to get updates after MSFS loads.

It sounds like a big step backwards to me.

Wasn't high resolution mesh included in WUs?

Well that makes a lot of sense as the Sim has to check the locally stored files and "integrate" them, updating if necessary. I suspect if you download a good deal of content that the loading times will go back to 2020 levels. When 2024 released I really wanted this feature but with time I see no benefit in it.  I am in my aircraft flying less than 3 minutes after launching 2024, which is great.

I guess those who disown local data don't know the continuous wear and tear that continuous writing of data to SSDs produces, apart from the fact that you avoid problems on those days when the internet connection has problems. If you have space to spare, it is an advantage to have the data you use regularly on local.

It's a breakthrough for me but I would also like to see an offline mode like 2020 has in case one day Microsoft's shareholders decide that maintaining MFS services is an expense as has already happened with Google Stadia.

I've never owned a PC long enough for an SSD to fail due to heavy write workloads but if I did I would spend 50 quid and buy a replacement. I guess if you mainly use default aircraft and airports it could be attractive but if you use 95% non marketplace pay ware it isn't really.

If, as you say, you use 95% third party and it is not from the Microsoft shop, you are already enjoying the benefits of having local data for a long time.

I haven’t entered the beta yet, I assume you can select individual aircraft / airports to download in the library?  If that’s the case I’ll likely download a few of the things I use the most and leave the rest streamed.

Seems like the hoopla over this feature is a little overblown as only a very very small subset of data to play the game is downloaded locally.

Yeah, I don't have any plans to start downloading stuff yet unless it will really be the gamechanger that is advertised.

So, are we saying that any addons that have not been purchased from the MS Marketplace are already stored locally in MSFS 2024?

Any default addon is currently streamed. Any third party addon is installed into the Community folder the same way it is for MSFS2020.

All my Addon airports I buy from Inibuilds, Simmarket, Aerosoft etc.

So all airports , addon scenery are on my pc. As is Prosim 738z

Better for performance and no issues when  streaming is less fast.

Is it safe to say that with this feature enabled then the level of streaming, and what sorts of assets are streamed or not, is pretty much equivalent to 2020?

I assume that World Updates are still streamed, since they are default addons?
