New SU 3 downloadable feature in MSFS 2024 is a game changer

Is it safe to say that with this feature enabled then the level of streaming, and what sorts of assets are streamed or not, is pretty much equivalent to 2020?

It's not enough to enable it, you need to choose what you want to download.

If you have one or two default or Marketplace aircraft you fly a lot then yes, it might be worth downloading them if you also have an unreliable internet connection. I have two Marketplace aircraft in 2024 as it's literally the only place to get them from and I've never had any issues with them being streamed at all but if I did, I could download them.

It's a breakthrough for me but I would also like to see an offline mode like 2020 has in case one day Microsoft's shareholders decide that maintaining MFS services is an expense as has already happened with Google Stadia.

I understand that is basically a physical impossibility, you would need to download a petabyte of data. Every aspect of MSFS is bound to servers so if Microsoft every decides end MSFS that is it, there is no continuing on with it. Same as for my Office suite, PowerBI, Slack, and a dozen other programs I used regularly -- no server, no service. Companies come and go, priorities come and go, that is just how it is.

I don't see this as much of a game changer, to be honest. Maybe if you use a lot of default airports and aircraft or purchase everything from the Marketplace this may make a small difference, but that is yet to be seen. For those of us who use principally third party aircraft and airports installed in our community folder, this feature makes no difference at all.

I assume that World Updates are still streamed, since they are default addons?

The World Updates are streamed now in SU2. But with this download feature, you can download the World Update in MSFS 2024, just like you download it for MSFS 2020.

Except that you aren't downloading everything as you don't get access to all the files. Why else would I want to download it all?

To relieve my Internet connection.

So this "game changing" feature with SU3 actually just gets us closer to being able to run the same way as 2020 LOL...

The "game changing" aspect was actually how 2024 was released which was streaming everything except 3rd party add-ons installed outside marketplace...

If most of your add-ons are outside marketplace like mine then all of your add-ons were already local.

This is more of a move along please, nothing to see here but nice to finally have the flexibility.

Before, all the default planes, sceneries, and World Updates,  in the Content Manager could only be streamed.  As of the SU 3 Beta, default planes, sceneries, and World Updates can be streamed or downloaded.

do the default MSFS 2024 planes now come unprotected? this would mean Bert Pieke et. al. could experiment with some unfinished Carenado business and fix some of the MSFS new Carenado default airplanes, like the Cessna Titan 404?

Not sure, I am following the thread in the MSFS forum on this: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/su3-beta-finally-able-to-download-default-aircraft-airports-and-scenery/721198/108

But you can view the CFG files using the VFS Projector in Developer mode:

No, they don't. No access to the cfg files unless you use the VFS system.

Seems like the hoopla over this feature is a little overblown as only a very very small subset of data to play the game is downloaded locally.

? I haven't looked too closely yet but you appear to be able to download everything that is currently streamed. Certainly all the WU's, airports and aircraft.

This has been asked for since day one when people starting clutching their pearls over 'streaming'. If this is hoopla then I guess you can please some of the people some of the time....

Yup, it's a big deal, because many people were requesting this since day 1 of MSFS 2024's release.  A lot of people were complaining that they could not download planes, sceneries, and everything else in the Content Manager.  Also, I think some of the low poly planes, blurry and fuzzy cockpit panels, because not all the data for the plane could be fully streamed, is solved once you are able to fully download the plane to your hard drive.

There are numerous photos of ugly looking planes and cockpit panels of MSFS 2024 because the streaming only downloaded a portion of the data. Now that won't happen anymore if you can fully download the plane to your hard drive - all the data will be there for the plane when you start your flight.

I think this is great, give us the option to download or stream, I for sure welcome the option.

The a21n cockpit was blurry for about a minute every time I spawned in SU2.

Downloading it solved it

I do have good internet also.

Yep, certainly no down side to having the option!
