My first impressions of MSFS 2024

The sepia mask is definitely there and it would be nice if they figured it out.

  • The beauty of 2024 is that you really don't need to run everything at Ultra. I have quite a bit on Medium and it still looks so much better and more realistic than 2020 ever did. Plus the PC I have is

That flight in question was at FL350 above Abu Dhabi.  The effect is worst in the Middle East where the whole River Nile area glows, fields and all.  It's not quite as bad in other regions.

It's an absolutely bizarre thing to have, given that they model individual rocks and you can go and stand on a sand bar in a river, yet the night environment looks like my picture.

There is no point comparing low and high altitude.  It looks great at low altitude.

For a mind-blowing experience, fly an amphib plane into the Grand Canyon and land on the Colorado River. I have done this in both MS2020 and MS2024, and there is no comparison -- the textures and rock strata in 2024 are far superior to 2020, far more realistic. On top of that, if you taxi your plane onto a sandbar in the river, you can get out and walk around (not possible in 2020) on the floor of the Canyon -- or even try climbing it if you dare!

I hear you!  A few moments ago I started preflight for taking the CRJ550 out of KTEX to KBJC.  While taxiing at the incredibly lovely KTEX environs two cow moose were ambling across the taxiway well ahead of me and was blown away as I saw this same thing while visiting that airport last time I was up at Telluride last fall!  Their animation was spot on..as I got a little close w/ a very slow taxi they spooked and trotted off into the woods near by.  As real as it gets! This and as you described there is no comparison for the detail of the surrounding mountainous terrain at that site comparing to 2020.

Ok um can we post pics of what cities should look like from FL300+ at night?

I'm looking at real life photos and they look a lot like what 2024 presents. Apparently, the sepia effect is cased by light pollution and atmospheric scattering.

No, it’s more when the fields and ground is glowing with light that it looks weird. Happens in desert areas and all. It’s  definitely something they want to fix, Seb talked about it in one of the streams.

You can still use 2020 keybinds, there is an option for that and that's what I use.

Good question. Yes, there is an option for 2020 keybinds. But why did it change? How did the change improve the sim?

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

I'm not seeing that at all....it's like we have totally different sims.

Your not seeing it and neither am I because it's highly subjective. In fact it's been complained about a few times on AvSim in the past by a very small number of people.

Hardware and graphic settings certainly make the night lighting look different to many.

Does it make it bad or wrong, not likely at all.

I've seen stuff like that in RL.  It's one of those fun, hobby things I'm guessing.

Well, I’m just saying that the CEO is Asobo said it was an issue they wanted to fix, by rendering the entire planet at night at various LODs and then using that instead of the sepia mask. I have no dog in this fight, so you can go argue with Seb and tell him he’s wrong and that it’s all good.

Not sure what WASD did in 2020, but since 2020 didn't have the walkaround I would guess these conflicted and it makes sense for the movement keys to be WASD.

Wow. That's a good essay on the issues. I just don't understand how who ever is in charge of night lighting at Asobo thinks this is good.  At the launch of 2020 it's the best its ever been and never been as good since an update shortly after launch. Ugh.

This is the Nile from FL330, which glows so much you can see the fields.  There are a few roads snaking through, which is all you should be able to see.  The sepia glowing needs to be turned off completely.

Well, on this particular screenshot it is pretty clear, why it has this mask: it is around settlements where they assume that light inside buildings lead to an illumination of the surrounding. It is simply overdone, but how does above example look in RL? I doubt it is completely dark except the roads...

But then: https://enterprise.press/stories/2017/09/17/a-view-of-the-nile-river-at-night-as-seen-from-outer-space/

And if you look for other images from the Nile region during night, it might not even be completely wrong...

Looks like a long shutter speed to me.

I've never been able to see fields glowing from FL330 with the naked eye.  Only time they glow is in Fallout 4.  Perhaps minor sepia mask in the distance might be something I'd be willing to accept.  Maybe an option to turn it off, or an LOD slider?  It can't be that difficult surely.
