Native Frame Gen 2024

Featured Replies

Hi, Im on Sim Update Beta 3 on the latest Nvidia drivers,  using fixed refresh and locking at 40 frames. Now the thing that I have noticed, 2020 and 2024 with the same settings and same locked frames via Riva Tuner. 2024 if I have native frame gen on, its not smooth at all, but if I turn frame gen off, now its nice and smooth at 40 frames. But if I do the same thing with 2020, its smooth with frame gen on. Anyone know why there is a difference in graphics between the 2 sims even though both have the same settings, same DLSS files via DLSS Swapper, using preset J and Nvidia App set to the same settings?

Frame gen is garbage

If you have a powerful pc

No need .

I never have used it with my 5080

TAA and half refresh rate 60hz 4k tv oled

30fps from take off to landing and smooth.

With autofps

Er, nope. FrameGen is a game changer. DLSS/DLAA, 4K, locked at 30fps, using FSR3 - now the most fluid and smooth, utterly stutter free experience I've ever had in any sim.

No need for any other garbage running in the background.

MSFS 2024 graphics are more advanced than MSFS 2020 overall, especially closer to the ground. So if your settings are exactly the same for both, MSFS 2024 will struggle more. Having said that, you can be at medium settings in MSFS 2024, and it can look better than high settings in MSFS 2020.

You may need to lower your settings in MSFS 2024 if you want a more smooth experience.

I’m curious what is the thinking behind locking the frame rate at like 30 or 40? Why not let it run at whatever your system can do?

Thats the first thing I would suggest trying is disabling that as it seems rather old school and I’m guessing DLSS may not work well with that.

I use FG with no locking of my FPS and have no stutters at all… 4090/9800X3D at 4K Ultra.

30 fps is NOT smooth.

If you lock your framerate with RTSS, at 40 fps with FG you will have only 20 real fps and 20 "interpolated". You need at least 30 native fps to have a good FG experience, especially with fixed refresh (I suppose at 60 Hz). 40 fps @ 60 Hz will never look good.

As for the DLSS DLL, does DLSS Swapper also replace the -G DLLs? Otherwise it has no effect on FG.

Yes

As others have said, set max frames exactly at 30, then turn on frame gen, either DLSS FG or FSR3 FG.  I find FSR3 slightly better so I use that, but obviously take your choice.

This was a turning point for me with smoothness.  Now this is with a 60hz monitor, 4k, ultra settings and I find it super smooth.  (14900k underclocked + 4080)

If you have a monitor displaying at a different frequency then I don't know if it affects anything.  I can't check as I only have a 60 Hz monitor, and that ties in exactly with the max frames at 30, doubled to 60 with the frame gen.  No tearing or stuttering at all.

I understand the negative comments about frame gen, as I was one that was struggling with it myself (stuttering etc.) until I found out how to set it up properly, but once you get it right it is excellent.

Yes, using a frame limit that is suitable to be maintained in close to 100% of the cases and then double it up using frame gen results in a super smooth sim. I have mine at 36FPS to get 72 after frame gen for my 144Hz monitor. Best results I ever had in any civil flight sim.

@AnkH Now you are making me think about updating my monitor Chris.

My PC can do about 42/43 fps in all situations, so now you have confirmed exact multiples work, I could go for the 36 / 72 / 144 thing.

Could you tell me what monitor you have and if you recommend it?

For other peoples information, I tried 35 fps to 70 fps FG on my 60 Hz monitor (even with Freesync) and it was terrible.  Really bad frame hitching.  I didn't realise the fps have to be in multiples of the monitor refresh rate (I thought freesync would take care of it - it didn't!).

Once I sorted this out, FG has been a great solution.  PC is cool and quiet as well as an added benefit as the CPU isn't going flat out.

For me I made sure I have a display (4k TV) that can do variable frame rates 49Hz to 144Hz.  So max frame rate set to 60, FG on, and super smooth visuals and whatever situation the sim fps and display ALWAYS align.

If the scenery is not extremely heavy for your setup then Unlimited + FG can be supersmooth. You probably have balanced your system and software very well.

And it is like MrFuzzy explains.

I have a 2 view setup ( 13900 / 4090 ) and if I let the framerate Unlocked + FG on I see stutters sometimes on the right screen,

But if 2024 is locked at 40 and not dropping frames, wouldn't the panning be smooth like 2020 even though it's graphically more intensive? Wouldn't my frames be dropping if that's the case? Frame Gen on is choppy, frame gen off smooth but not have a solid 40 frames in 2024.
