September 17, 2025Sep 17 This is a very worrying issue. I have just fitted a RTX4090 which works perfectly. However, I've been using it with DX12 and frame gen for the past week with no problem whatsoever. But only today I did a short flight in the chancellor into Belfast and to my surprise, I only got 28-30fps around the terminal! I was really puzzled, as it was a little jittery too. I hadn't done any flying with DX11 and TAA, so I thougt it would be a good test to do some comparisons, so I switched to DX11 and closed down the sim. However, when I tried to restart the sim, it kept getting as far as the loading screen and then just crashed back to the desktop. Here we go again I thought, another issue that I have to deal with. I tried restarting the sim and rebooting, but after about six attempts I gave up and reinstalled the latest driver. This will work I thought, but nope, nothing. I kept getting the error message: 'Your graphics device has encountered a problem' delivered via zendesk msfs2020, but it also showed 'DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG.' I now cannot start MSFS in any way whatsoever! Feeling very frustrated.... does anyone have any idea what is going on? BTW, I also exited both the Xbox app and the MS store app and then logged back in. That was no help either. September 17, 2025Sep 17 It's been like this for a while now. No fix in sight. I also have 4090 so not sure it's related or not , others will tell. Also go into your UserCfg.opt file and do the following : Change PreferD3D12 0 to PreferD3D12 1 and you should be able to get back in. Edited September 17, 2025Sep 17 by mobeans10 additional info

I think you'll find changing to 0, will favour DX11, which is what I want to run. I have infact tried both values, but with zero success. I'm at a loss here, so not sure how this will turn out. September 17, 2025Sep 17 Everytime I tried DX11 and got "locked out" , changing the PreferD3D12 back to 1 in the config file always got me back in. I'm stumped why it's not working for you. Edited September 17, 2025Sep 17 by mobeans10 spelling
September 17, 2025Sep 17 DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG errors often can be fixed by simply changing to a different Nvidia driver set. Nothing to do with DX11 or 12. i7-13700KF, 32gb DDR4 3200, RTX 4080, Win 11, MSFS 2024

September 17, 2025Sep 17 Had the same issues with my 5090. Tried a reset of settings, new driver download etc. Only DX12 has been working for me of late. The preferD3D12 flag to 1 in the config file worked for me. Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. MSFS2020. Moza, MFG, Fulcrum & Virpil controllers. Quest 3 for VR.

September 17, 2025Sep 17 I had this few weeks ago, for me it was the dlss hack from cyberpunk, restored to original and can use dx11 again no issues.... worth noting i was rounded on by the usuals here for saying i wanted to at least have a choice to run either dx12 or 11.... Sure, my thoughts too. I always test comparison flights when changing something substantial in the sim. I never just assume because everyone else is using something, or doing something in a particular way, that I have to do the same and get positive results, as we all know, it rarely works like that. I'm off to bed now, so will revisit things tomorrow. September 18, 2025Sep 18 This MSFS 2020 switching DX12 to DX11 problem is well known. It seems to be caused by the nvidia app. Some have solved the problem by simply unistalling it. For me, had to both uninstall it and run DDU to clear our the nvidia driver tainted by the app. After running DDU and installing an nvidia driver without the accompanying app, MSFS 2020 DX11 worked fine again.
