64gb vs 32gb RAM

Featured Replies

ASOBO said early on that 32 gb was sufficient for MSFS2024 and you only needed morer if you ran a lot of high RAM usage stuff (e.g. video editing software) in the background.

32 is fine. I ran 32 for ages. I have 64 GB now, but I would never buy at today's prices .. it made sense when I bought it. I really don't think you need more than 32 GB.. 16 GB would be a little low.

  • Me, too.  Love a dedicated computer.

  • In my opinion, I would never "recommend" 64 gb.  32 is fine, 64 is what I would call a luxury.  It can help with 1% lows and a few fringe performance cases but for almost all situations 32 is fine.

Where did he say that "more RAM results in more fps"?

in his post?

"the more data you have in the fastest possible storage component, the better for performance."

"it should however reduce long frame frequency so one's FPS will be a bit more consistent."

if that was true, 256 GB would be even better. but it isn't, because the CPU obvioulsy can re-load fast enough in the background from just 32 GB DRAM main memory with no fps penalty. at least that's what Asbobo said. and I have yet to see any benchmark that shows how  64 GB and more has  improved performance noticeably.

very nice.

direct relationship between more RAM results in more fps?

I didn't ... did you read what I wrote?

I thought I was pretty clear, if you have to go out to get data from a storage resources on an HDD (because it's not cached or pre-loaded so not in system RAM nor VRAM), then that is going to be considerably slower than if it was in system RAM (resources are pre-loaded by the sim because it does detect how much RAM you have and will use it per my screenshot) ... HDD is 8ms DDR5 is 0.00001ms.  Going to HDD will translate into longer frames if the resource is not in RAM and needs to be obtained from HDD.

There are many other variables to FPS.  FPS isn't determined by just "one component", it's a collection of components, the software, sim graphics settings, the add-ons, the location in sim, time of day in sim, weather in sim, graphics driver, OS settings, chipset, etc.

And as I pointed out earlier with screenshot from MSFS official and link, Microsoft listed the "ideal" RAM configuration was 64MB and "recommended" at 32GB ... and no where was FPS suggested.

If FPS is your thing, plenty of solutions, turn down graphics settings, use less add-ons, buy better hardware, fly in remote areas, etc. etc.  like I said, I'm perfectly happy in the 30-40 FPS range and lock into that since it falls into my monitors VRR range.

At no point did the OP (@Bubba1293) ever mention FPS.  Believe it or not, some of us aren't as obsessed with FPS as you 😉

My former server had 32 Gb and I had two 4K tv’s. Always PSXT and several other apps running too.

Never ever I saw a Memory usage above 28 Gb.

Now my new server has 48 Gb and I have three 4K tv’s.  More than enough.

and again, "more consistent" is NOT higher FPS ... and again "better for performance" is NOT higher FPS.

Did you forget to mention you don't run a VC? 😉

Hello,  I'm getting ready to migrate to MS2024 from 2020 and had read something in the past about msfs2024 recommending 64gb.  That was before all the sim updates came along.  Is that still the case?   Given that memory prices are crazy now, was curious if I really need to upgrade now.    My current system is:

13700k

32gb ddr5

rtx 4080

34 ultra wide gsync

Thanks

Bubba

Unless you feel you really need the extra ram, I would wait. I am using 48gb ddr5 8000, I have never gone over 30gb or so with the most complex planes. I would wait 6 months and see where the ram prices are. I had considered going from 48gb to 64 just because i could because ram was cheap. I would say just be patient. It will eventually go down. I believe it's more scalping companies than AI. Of course i could be wrong. Good luck.

However there are still issues to be aware of when you install 4x16Gb DIMMS.

that's a known fact and why I always insert only 2 banks of DIMMs. 2 x 32 GB in my case.

That's funny. My ram usage average is about 55 to 65% with everything running. I guess windows is smart enough to cap your memory usage depending on how much you have installed. But I do know that after upping my ram to 64GB, 2024 is running a whole much smoother.

PS5 does VR better ... might want to go that route.  😉

I don't see any chance of price reductions in any PC component going on to at least 2028 sadly.  The scalpers are old news as that practices is now fully shifted to major retailers like B&H Photo, Best Buy, Micro Center, etc. ... they all jumped on the band wagon ... not sure who's actually buying at these prices?

According Gamer Nexus (Steve), PC retailers have been asking him for promos as their sales have dropped 70%!!  PC Market is on life support now.  I honestly would not be surprised if Microsoft/Asobo dropped the PC version entirely if there is a new XBOX coming out in 2027.

But current XBOX components are from 2020 (6 years old is prehistoric in computing terms) ... may as well get an Etch A Sketch for your graphics pleasure ...

In demanding scenery with high end aircraft, MSI AB indicates 28-30 GB RAM usage. So my verdict is clear: 64 is a must.

9800x3D (Strix x870e-E)  -  64GB RAM (DDR5 6000, CL 30)  -  RTX 5090, 34'' 1440p OLED HDR  -  Windows 11 Pro (1TB M.2)  -  MSFS 2024 (MS Store, 4TB M.2).

If you are rolling in dough why stop at 64gb.  128gb would be better no?

I have a feeling the new XBOX will blow most MSFS PC's and PS6 out of the water for $700-$1000.

As long as some flight simmers are prepared to fork out £2000+ for a graphics card, there will always be a market for the scalpers
