If you get to the end of the road in tweaking FSX...

Hi David,I hope it was not my post (which by the way was intended to be humorous and not critisizing at all) that triggered your remark (as it came just after my post I was afraid it might have been the case) .I did not intend to hurt anybody, and if I did I am very sorry.Jean-Jacques
No, no!Not at all Jean-Jacques :--)My remark was refering to some critics I've read for some days now and I wanted to stop this kind of polemics here. :(

Thanks David,And yes, sometimes people forget that this is all about a hobby. As for myself, I have tried Nick's recommendations, some of them worked for me and others didn't.I am running fsx on a bootcamp WinXP partition (Intel 2.4Ghz Duo Core, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT) on my Mac when I am out of my home country (as is the case now) with all the limitations of that hardware and on a desktop at home (i7 920, 230GTX) and will try ******* fixes and tweaks when back at home end of may :( Generally I try suggested tweaks and if they don't work for me I just move ahead and forget about it :( I think the best tweak is to get an up to date PC for FSX (and mine is not one of the best). I also recognize that some of the folks here are young students on limited income, well, maybe instead of spending their free time on tweaking FSX on an old machine, they should spend it on earning some extra money and save it for a newer pc. But I also reognize that this is very easy for me to tell and maybe not so easy to implement :(Jean-Jacques

Can you imagine if Nick and ******* teamed up? We could announce a new ACES team!Mark

Guys,******* never claimed to deliver the Holy Truth. He is a talented guy that offered his finds to the community with a bunch of cautious warnings and also a lot of modesty.Tweaking is (for most of us) part of the fun, you are free to try or not, that's your choice.Saying such things as "NickN, you always was right!" is IMO not very fair nor usefull.Neither Nick nor ******* have found or will find the so called "holy grail" beacuse the ONLY way to get a 100% smooth and performant simulator is to rewrite the whole FSX coding. They both give tracks to explore that might help - or not.Now Nick's approach is IMO rigid and rather authoritative: "do this, do that, don't change a word of what I say". Some like or need that, some don't, it's a matter of personnality.I, for one never apply all his recommandations to the letter. Neither do I with Bojote tweaks. The only thing that bothers me with Nick is that he doesn't really allow contradictions and above all he does not really explain things. Most of what Nick wrote in his guides is true and highly interesting but there is also lot of irrelevant or useless information. Again, he is not a guru and doesn't deliver the one and only truth. He is a person with very good knowledge and skills but he can be wrong too.******* approach is radically different, he tries different things, some are pure genious, other are pure crap and when he is wrong he recognizes it with humour. He wants people to apply his finds only if they understand what they are doing. He involves the guys in his finds. He takes the time to educate others. He is also a talented person with worthy skills but he is not either a guru.I received lot of PMs asking why did I pinned his "guide" and not Nick's one.The resaon is very, very simple and has nothing to do with "who is right and who is wrong". In fact, both guides are very complementary and helpful to the community.Nick's guide is not a sticky because he was not published in our forums but in Simforums and we do respect intellectual property. One can find thousands of links to Nick's work here though. So take what is good for you here and there, try, make your own judgement and above all make backups!! But please, don't open a war between ******* and Nick. There are engouh other forums for that (...) and here, it won't be tolerated. Thanks!
Hello ******* , Sorry I am a little bit confused,here(http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=283061&st=0) I see you recommended TextureMaxLoad=30 and now below 18? So which one is better? I am on Corei7 @3.6Ghz 285GTX.ThanksBob
Don't worry Bob, I understand your confusion. the post you are refering to is MY personal fsx.cfg file, you read the BIG NOTICE/WARNING on top of it right? I think not :) and.... why is this related to the OP problem when I already suggested him to use 3?Bob, for your setup, simply use 6 or 9

Polemics? There was nothing here intended in my post against tweaking, or Bejote or Nick, just that the sim can get out of wack with all the so called tweaks so I hope that comment isnt in reference to me or anyone else who doesnt agree with endless tweaking. Why so called? Because some of them clearly are dead ends or just plain dead, take your pick. The time waisted to tweak endlessly with some of these are real time wasters let alone kill one kind of performance in exchange for boosting somewhere else (FPS vs Blurries). The OP started this topic with that fact in mind and some of us happen to agree and yet others feel the need to chime in that we still need to tweak, missing the whole point and certainly going off topic.Surely there is room here for both views but I also agree there is no need for war, nough of that out there.Back to flying...

Hi Bert, I noticed your IMAGE_COMPLEXITY set at 5.. this is a CPU killer, and this prevents textures to load quick enough, so this can definitely induce blurries. My recomendation is that you use a value of 3 here.Blurries are simply the inability to 'keep up' with terrain loading inside the FSX engine, there is no SINGLE setting that causes it, but a combination of them.. no need to go back to your old fsx config if the new one is working for you, I just wanted to understand 'what' caused the 'blurries' you reported and I think that the combination of the above values definitely played a major role.
I again have this set to 5 which allows details in the Victoria+ scenery to show up... do not notice any real difference in performance.
With that 9600 it is probably not the best to try to get 8xsAA out of that card, even at that low screen resolution.
Luckily, the 9600 (which is a re-packaged 8800) runs 8XS quite well, and I do like the great visuals..To all, who are suddenly picking on Bojote, I just want to say that I really appreciate all he has done forthe hobby - the reason that I am using AM=14 is due to his analysis, and if and when I get a new system,I will certainly re-visit his tuning suggestions!

Bert

Player2 and B748I'll gladly address any concerns or 'confussions' you might have regarding 'tweaks' or recomendations, you can either do it privately or open your OWN thread for this. your choice. Thanks,

I used to have a 9600 but was probably running at higher resolution that it could never handle with 8xs, but glad it's working for you.Agree, no one should be picked on, opinions can all be shared without the need for imature personal comments so thanks to the Mods here for keeping that from happening.

Here HereJesus and his diligent research into the nuts and bolts of FSX have revolutionized the program for me and many other.

Q : If you get to the end of the road in tweaking FSX...A : Wait for new system ...soon :(

David - I have a lot of respect for you and the job that the mods do BUT - IMHO - if anyone is fomenting a "war" between NickN and ******* - it is you with posts like this one. I didn't perceive an inflammatory statement or insult in the "NickN, you always was right" post. Frankly, didn't even notice it until you called it to attention.Just MHO but I think you screwed the pooch on this call - to ME - it appears that YOU are the one with the bias. And until you brought this matter up, the thread had some good points. Also, I don't believe ******* felt I was 'picking' on him - he responded to my opinion quite clearly. Part of the learning process is to question - whether it be ******* or NickN - it stimulates thought and discussion and often reveals new truths.Sometimes the best moderation is none at all.I think both ******* and NickN are perfectly capable of defending themselves and do not need a moderating angel. As always - just MHO,Vic

Oh my... :--))))))))My English is that bad?? :( Everyone is free to tweak or not to tweak and if someone is fed up with trying new finds and say "back to flying" no one will sue him !!My comment is aimed to some folks that write crap about Bojote in other forums and I wouldn't want to see that here. Period!

Vic, I just told my wife you called me "angel".Now she can't stop laughing and I will be obliged to cook the dinner. That's not fair from you! Now, I respect your opinion and your honesty. But I disgree with you.God knows how much I am closed to Flight1 guys. Some of them are real friends of mine in the "true life".But there are things I am reading in the "Hardware, Software, and Computer Technology" forum there I don't wish to see here. You say that Bojote and NickN are perfectly capable of defending themselves.Yes, they are big boys now!But Nick is not a member of Avsim anymore thus I won't tolerate that someone criticize him here because he won't be able to answer. In another hand I've personaly asked ******* to refrain from answering to attacks here in order to avoid the "war" some folks would like to bring in here. That's why I wrote my warning.I am not fomenting anything. Believe me, I have other concerns in my life now and very few time for this kind of childish behavior.I am just trying with Geof and Jeremy to keep the place as clean as we can for everyone's interest and satisfaction. And sometimes it's not an easy task when we see what's going on behind the curtain... :(
