Nvidia Driver 258.96 and FSX

Featured Replies

Delete Nhancer if you want to improve FSX, that's a good start.
nHancer is a great product, I use it all the time and will use it again when the new version comes out for the 200 series nVidia drivers. It has never caused me any performance problems for me.

The nvidia contol panel does nothing for FSX. Nada! It doesn't work. With the latest driver, Nick's profile is needed. With older drivers Nhancer is the best way to get the best picture quality.

Exactly Right!Kind regards,Stephen

I say stay with 197.45 until nHancer is compatible with the newest driver.

If you are the type of person who "needs" FSAA at 1920x1080, you need it at 5760x1080. The resolution is not increased on each monitor, therefore, you are still seeing an 1920x1080 image on each screen, only difference being it is 3x as wide. I, personally, have to have FSAA set to at least 4x, even at my native resolution of 2560x1600. Jaggies just jump right out at me.With regards to using the FSAA setting within FSX, I believe it only sets the FSAA level to 2x. So, it is in no way more effective than being forced through the driver or NHancer, that is, if you are referring to actual image quality.
I don't need AA over 2x, and please don't lecture me in screen resolutions, of course I know that 5760 is spread over the 3 monitors, sheez. It may set it to 2x on your rig, but not mine.I don't like Nhancer, it slows my system down, but each to his own. I followed the advice of the owner of Aerosoft (Mathijskok) and deleted Nhancer, and I'm glad I did.

First off, fix your attitude. It is isn't wanted, nor is it needed here. Nobody was "lecturing you" and your post eluded to the notion that an NV Surround resolution negated the need for FSAA. I was simply pointing out that each monitor's resolution is still the same despite the addition of extra monitors. If you feel deleting NHancer improves performance, be my guest, but the information you have been given is incorrect. There is no way for NHancer to reduce performance outside of the end-user boosting up settings their personal setup is incapable of running.....and that is not NHancer's fault.

I use 197.45, tried 258.96 and it played up madly. So happy staying on 197.45 until I can really see a good reason to change it.
DITTO! The GTX285 OC luvs this driver.jja

This is incorrect with respect to the GTX460. In my case the nvidia control panel works very well. I use "override application settings" and I get the sharpness and clarity that I need for FSX. Turn off "Override" or use "enhance the application" and I get a severe case of the jags and shimmers. Turn off vsync and watch the tearing occur as you fly around at high fps.It is very easy to check whether the nvidia control panel is working or not by adjusting these settings.nHancer is an excellent product but in my case I haven't used it as it would be imposible on a GTX 460 (at present)RegardspeterH

Really? Can someone else with a gtx 260 and whatever driver Peter is using, please confirm that the nvidia control panel works with FS?Peter, maybe you're the only one who has successfully found a way to get nvidia's control panel to work with FSX. I haven't!

I have a GTX 285 and confirm this latest 258.96 driver works fine for me. The sim runs, it flies fine, and I have no problems to report.I am not sure though if the Nvidia Control Panel works fully. I do believe that some settings work, but others may not. For example, if I turn Vsync off I will see tearing as I pan around the VC. It's not much tearning, but it is there. Turn it back on and the tearing is gone. Yet I have never been able to get the Nvidia Control Panel AA settings to work in FSX for me, with this or any other previous version of Nvidia's drivers. No matter what setting I use for AA in the Nvidia Control Panel (2x, 4x, 8x, etc), the sim never seems to change the level of AA at all. Looking at the edges of the cockpit I see no apparent changes whatsoever. This happens whether I tick the AA option inside FSX or not. However, if I don't tick that AA option inside FSX, the edges are horribly jagged. So I just leave that ticked and run the sim with that setting ... it's fine ... I'm happy enough with that.I have always run FSX with the latest version Nvidia drivers. As soon as the latest WHQL release is out, I download and install it. I'm not afraid. I don't wait for others to "test" it. I just grab it and install it. I don't use Nhancer. Never have. And the sim has always worked fine for me. Just the native Nvidia drivers and nothing more. I've never had an issue or a problem with FSX, or any other game I own. And this 258.96 version is no different. It's working fine.

Freddy

I kinda doubt nHancer slows anyone's system down, but I do think some of the settings dialed in in nHancer (or the other driver GUI) can slow your system down, after all it's just a configuration GUI utility for the driver, at least that's what I have believed. I am using a considerably (maybe 35% throughput platform as yours) and yet I have virtually perfect performance if defined by best IQ, lack of stutters or 'slippage', and frame rates with 3rd party complex aircraft, ORBX FTX scenery, dense to extreme autogen, in dense terminals averaging 21 at the very worst environments, to a steady 30 in anything be the worst environments/weathers. I don't run it faster than 30 as I use FPS_Limiter, but I know at altitude of course it goes way high. As I say, I use nHancer. Bejote's ideas, plus FPS_Limiter got me there more than anything. I don't use any of NickN's set up guides. I do run FSX at high priority, with a affinity mask setting as Bejote recommended. Ever since those changes were made, the need for new hardware went away. I'm sure having 3 big screens is pretty hefty on certain resources though. And I'm not sure if I want to go to 1920 x 1200 due to concerns that it could impact performance! I going to hold out for something with smaller pixel pitch I think. My chief goal is razor sharp imagery, so to that end more pixel pitch, and a smaller physical screen with a higher resolution is what I will be seeking.

Surely the issue with the Nvidia control panel is not that it doesn't work, but that it doesn't do enough for some people? It certainly does work for me (Macbook Pro running win7 x64 in bootcamp w/9600M GT). I have different AA and AF settings for each of my flight sims (FSX, FS9 and Lock On) and these custom settings are recalled automatically when I run the program. I don't remember it ever being different since buying the computer last year. It just works.I might not have the fine-grained control that nHancer offers, but to suggest that you *must* use it in order to control FSX's AA and AF settings isn't right for 100% of users. Try them both then stick with what works for you.Kind regardsDave
