So how does the PMDG 737NGX compare to...

Recommended Posts

Ethan, I fully understand what you are saying and concur that for the feeling nothing beats having actual papers to turn. However, I just have too many manuals to handle and especially for charts the iPad is so smooth! You don't have to keep track of which charts have been updated since the link points to the latest ones (at least with Noahs app) and the ink cost is kinda small! :D What I am waiting for is manuals with interactive content where eg some of the pics are actually videos. That would communicate better with my primitive brain... Again, sorry for taking it OT but I just feel so enthusiastic for the iPad. :(
I totally understand and respect what you are saying. I actually have the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4. I live of of those devices. Infact 99% of my posts are made using one of them. (including this one) Speeking of which, does anyone know how to view signatures with the iPhone version of the avsim forums? I just see the posts and no sigs nomatter which orientation that I hold the phone in. I can see the username at the beginning of the posts though. I know many peoples name just by thier UNs, but for many people, I need to see their sig to know their name. Thanks!
Again, sorry for taking it OT but I just feel so enthusiastic for the iPad. :(
Actually....You are quite on topic, especially compared to a lot of things talked about on this thread. :(

Exactly, it beats the usual '(please) give us pics' posts!I went through a lot of thinking before laying down my £500 for an iPad, and did it much out of faith that I would find uses for it once I had it. That happened as I'd hoped, and it's an invaluable tool now.

happened to me as well. no regrets here.as i mentioned earlier in this thread i hope that the fsx kneeboard would get more attention with interactive loadsheets/ approach charts etc inside the VC .. sort of further developing on the interactive loadsheet PMDG has created for the J41on the left side of the captain.perhaps a too difficult and ambitious idea to have charts projected on the yoke yet (as it moves in virtual 3d space) but luckily i now have the iPad in the VC providing me with all sorts of aviation related charts on the fly. all you need is wifi. and you'll find something. Now i am waiting for some clever person to develop a CDU for iPad, it almost has the perfect size for that.

Maybe I'm just old school, but I like my checklists printed, laminated, and maybe ring bound if multiple pages.

I've actually come up with a (very crude!) contraption to attach a kneeboard to my CH yoke by way of my Garmin 296's yoke mount, a block of wood, some sellotape and many rubber bands biggrin.gifI just print the plates in A5, and clip them on!

I use GoodReader for viewing PDF's. They've just released an update which makes panning/zooming in PDF's much smoother. Transferring them is easy too; you can do it wirelessly, or drag and drop via iTunes (no need to actually sync by the way, you just drag and drop into the app files, and it's pretty much instant).

I dont have mine laminated, but I do print them all out and put them in my "pilots binder". I tried using the checklist feature in Avilasofts EFB, but I just didn;t like it. But I do use my laptop for charts. It would be too costly for me to print ever darn chart and stick them in binders, not to mention keep up when the procedures change. I have looked into an IPad for FSKneeboard, and will probably pick one up, mainly for that App, in a few months time.

There are a few problems with making a CDU for the iPad. Connectivity is one. I used to use Air Display to display the FMC on the iPad but the connection timed out so much that I decided it wasn't worth he hassle. There are a lot of things that have to work really well such as the module in FS that takes the flight data and transfers it back and forth over the WiFi network to the ipad. And no matter how well you program your app, there's nothing that you can do about the inherent network instability issue some people see when trying to get the Apple iPad to connect seamlessly with the PC computer via wifi. In FS, reliability is probably the one thing needed for any add-on to be successful because we all know how much we hate it when something crashes in the middle of a flight. A CDU is one of those things that would probably always have to be working perfectly all the time for it to be of any use. Then there is the problem of keeping the device's nav data up do date which would have to be done by whoever is developing the app because it wouldn't be possible to go to Navigraph or where and buy a new data file.

If Navigraph would come up with an iPad app.....!

What I do to "laminate" them is to print the checklist page out on a lightweight piece of card stock, and then I got some of those self-laminating sheets from Amazon or Stples. Works really great with the J41 and its one page checklist. I used to use the binder but it was too cumbersome.

I love my iPad! - It's the world in the palm of my hand! So amazing...Can someone create a list with iPad Apps that pertain to Flying procedures, like eg. That thing called FS knee board in someone's signature, I'd like that. That would be a huge plus! ( I would really love to maximize the use of my iPad.)
