First load takes minutes - despite of SSD's

Featured Replies

Am I the only one on this planet for whom the first loading of FSX takes minutes (although the system runs completely off 2 6gb/s SATA SSD's)`When FSX starts, the CPU cores idle for a minute or two before anything happens except showing the splash screen of FSX.When I shut down FSX and restart it, it takes less than 30 seconds to get the flight underway. It's just the first time that takes forever.Any solutions out there?Best,Bernhard

That´s normal. FSX is just analyzing your system and building up the FSX.cfg. That´s why it takes that long

I have Windows 7 64 and FSX on separate SSD's and FSX loads in about 15 seconds from the time I launch the program, and this includes the time it takes for Ultimate Traffic 2 to initialize.

audiohavoc - that's faster than mine wow! Then again im loading LOD 6.5Anyway to the OP - have you got the latest Intel RST driver? I think ver 10 is the latest:http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=%22Intel+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel+RST)%22#As far as timing - my very first load of the day takes around 45 seconds.

It does this every time after I start the computer, not just the first time FSX runs. And I think this is strange...

After reading the original post again, I think I need to clarify. It takes about 15 seconds (sometimes a few more) to get to the free flight screen. Actually loading the aircraft and scenery is around another 20-30 seconds, but depends on the complexity of the aircraft and scenery. In all, I would say that 45 seconds total sounds about right to be sitting in the cockpit in FSX for the first load of the day.

A lot of it is down to RAM speed and quantity. There is a lot of data to transfer into RAM when you crank up FS, and if you don't have stacks of RAM, or slow clock speeds, you'll be into using scratch disk VM, which will slow things down as data is shuffled around. Things such as bus speeds also come into play too of course, and any bottlenecks you have in the bus speeds will slow things down. You could have the fastest hard disk on the planet, or the fastest RAM, or stacks of RAM, but any computer is only as good as its slowest component, so matching them all up well can have a big effect on how well things run.Al

Yes that does sound strange...Mine is similar to the audiohavoc... less than 20 secs from the FSX icon click to Free Flight screen (first start after a reboot). After a flight (exit sim) and starting for a new Flight about 10 secs then.Just tried loading the Kwazulu Rhino Rescue Mission... about 20 secs for thatFree Flight with the PMDG-74F, UK2000 Heathrow X & Orbx Wx No. 4... took about 30 secsUsing a 3ware 9650SE raid card with 4 Intel V-25s (Value SSDs) in RAID0 in Win XP x64, LOD 4.5Like Ryan mentioned check drivers... Also the firmware... first thing before loading anything I did, was to update the firmware for the SSD and to check it using the Intel SSD Toolbox.

When fsx first loads, it loads the scenery for the default flight, you can overcome this by adding a DisablePreload=1 to the [MAIN] section of the fsx.cfg file. This also saves it having to unload all that info when you start at a different location. That may speed things up a little.

Then I missunderstood something. In this case my statement is wrong. I thought you meant the very first startup after installation

+1even on first load it is really fast. (Both opening FSX and the load of first flight)never had the situation described in OP with my SSD.

That's a very useful tip. Thank you. I never use the default flight.

Bernhard; Something is definitely very wrong. You might try running the resource monitor (accessed via task manager) and watch the disk activity right after starting FSX. Are you running the SSDs using AHCI? I've found that using SSDs in IDE mode on my system slows them way down, although probably not enough to reproduce the sort of behavior you are seeing. If you are running the SSDs in IDE mode, you might also check that the disk system hasn't shifted from DMA to PIO mode--sometimes something as simple as putting in a scratched CD/DVD connected to your IDE controller can cause the entire disk system to permanently change to the much slower PIO mode--it can be changed back with a registry setting, but it won't do that on its own. Also, a bad drive anywhere in the system, or a loose/disconnected cable can cause the disk system to go stupid for a while why it repeatedly tries to bring up the offending device. One last thought...go into the Power Options menu in Control Panel, find the advanced power settings in the active power management plan (probably "high performance") go into the "Hard Disk" tab and make sure that "turn off hard disk after" is set to "never"--it might be that your drives have been powered down due to inactivity and startup is being delayed while they power back up. Curiously, the default high performance settings do power down the disks after 20 or 30 minutes.

You can't compare your startup times to that of other people because the startup time for FSX is dependent on how many aircraft and scenery it has to load. I have dual 6GB Raptors in RAID0 and a clean FSX loads up within seconds. I piled on all of my addon scenery and it really didn't impact it that much. What DID cause it to take minutes to load is all of the AI traffic I have in my SIMOBJECTS folder. My start up time is now measured in minutes (5 - 10!). Also, once all of this is loaded into the W7 prefetch cache, if I shut down FSX and immediately start it up again, it takes significantly less time to load. Also FYI FSX does NOT "build the fsx.cfg" each time you start the program unless for some reason you delete it each time. The FSX.CFG is read as saved from the last flight. There is nothing wrong with your system...unless you did nothing and the time to load somehow increased for no reason at all.
