"The pace was picking up now, and we'd just gotten an opportunity to make up on lost time. I turn to the F/O and tell him to "Do the checklist now". Fairly clear in my opinion what I was expecting him to do, but he turns to me and asks "Would you like me to do the taxi checklist again then captain?". I breath out slowly, and while staring calmly ahead, but looking clearly annoyed, I say "The takeoff checklist; if you would". "Oh, erm, yeh, Takeoff checklist, of course". Well after that I think I can successfully say the term "Sterile Cockpit" was re-defined and brought to a whole new level...." Which pilot reading a checklist twice, I had a bad day either if I ever came up with that idea...:-)

I think that given the circumstances, I wouldn't be in a very talkative mood either. Force fed food you didn't like and being made wake up at 3 in the morning without a cup of coffee, the stress of the medical exam and the sim check hanging over his head, I'd cut him some slack. From reading some of his other posts here on the forum, he always seems willing to help out those that don't know as much as he does so I suppose that carries over to his work as well. He did say

So for the rest of that week we spent pretty much all of our time together in silence, apart from the odd interruption for flight related matters. Rónán.
so it seems like if the new F/O did have any trouble or a question, he would have answered them, but that's just how I read it. From what I gathered after reading it was that it was more of a funny story caused by a result of a series of coincidences rather than once of a senior pilot acting like an &@($* to a new pilot. To be honest though, you can't really blame the F/O either though, being only 5 months in the airline and then being placed with a senior captain would make anyone nervous, that's just human nature. For all I know Ronan could be a lovely fella who was just caught on an off day, we all have them, but I'll have to leave him to respond on that. Does anyone know where he is? He hasn't posted since all these people started complaining?

Working I believe, he said he was on his way to Chicago in the big shiny bus.

Oh right, Oops, I probably should have guessed that. Anyway, we probably owe him a chance to explain himself then instead of ripping him apart when he can't defend himself. He's really helped me and probably many others learn alot since I started reading these forums a few weeks ago, so I feel we owe him that.

Ronan- some respectfull advice..... Whatever about your mood on that day and the circumstances, its a bit too much to post without thinking of the consequences. I wouldnt post that kind of stuff on a public forum, no way. At the very least I wouldnt use my real and or airline. This thread has already popped up on an Irish aviation board that I moderate, and it wouldnt read as good press to the media if I hadnt removed it. You certainly don't want it appearing on PPRune....threre are tons of journos over there. I can see the headline in the Sindo on sunday="Angry captain enfoces silence on terrified newbie". Youre putting a lot of info on the net about who you are and what you do, don't think there arent media types that won't exploit this if it gets to a more mainstream forum. My 2 cents...no offence intended...take it or leave it.

Not to mention that it affects the safety of the whole aircraft, including its passengers, when the FO is made so nervous that he can't perform his functions properly anymore, namely double-checking the Captain for possible mistakes.

Why would a 'Real Pilot' be faffing around on a game/sim forum? I might be wrong here, but, if I spent all day in the real thing, looking a screen in a room after work just won't cut it.....and if it's for procedures, then I would be seriously concerned if real pilots don't know this already. And yes, you are wrong, he is a real pilot, and there are many people that do it on the forums.

There certainly seems to be a lot of people making a lot of assumptions around here, firstly there are many times that you fly with people that you just don't click with, having a lot of friends on that side of the industry, it is not uncommon to have a very quiet deck for the cruise - certain personality types just don't mix. Does this mean that there is a danger for the pundits in the back? No! As long as there is not a "dont ever question your captain" attitude up, front there is no danger whatsoever. Now I agree that Ronan probably would/should have thought twice before posting this on a forum where it is no secret who he is and the airline he works for - again there are plenty of idiots at Pprune who'd love this as well - even if it is a total non-event.But give the guy a break - the amount of abuse you chaps are hurling about is not neccessary - especially to someone who is always keen to help and share his time with you.I think that if the mods weren't very busy this thread would have gone a long time ago.

You don't post that sort of stuff on the internet full stop. Imagine you were that 'stupid kid' he was flying with that day and he's there plastering the details of that day on public forums. How would you feel? All I'll say is that if the airline knew about this............
