Why is everybody so much into heavy long-haulers?

Featured Replies

Last long haul i did was QF31, SIA-LHR. 13hrs 25mins. Yep. Fsx crashed when I was on approach and I hadn't saved in 5 hours plus.

Why is everybody so much into heavy long-haulers
Can't say I am. I'm a bush flying/general aviation guy by heart and very much prefer small aircraft, especially vintage ones, on short trips no longer than 2-3 hours, if that. While I do have some larger long range aircraft among the over 30 add-on birds in my hangar, like for example the 727, the Stratocruiser, the C-130 and maybe with a stretch the B-17, the rest of my fleet consists of various small bush planes (Cessna 185, Cessna Grand Caravan, Piper Cub, Super Cub, Beaver, Bird Dog, etc.), general aviation birds (Cessna 172, Beechcraft Bonanza, Beechcraft Duke, Piper Arrow, Piper Cherokee etc.) war birds (Spitfire, P-47, PBY, etc.) and medium haulers (J-41, BN-2 Islander, DC-2, Twin Otter etc.).I'm not really that much into big birds, although they are very interesting from time to time. There was no way around the NGX for me, though, because I'm also a sucker for realism and system depth, and these traits combined with its challenging complexity lured me in on the NGX.

I have to admit that I fly large aircraft on short routes all the time. I know it not necessarily common in real life, but it does happen. It all depends on where I am in the mood to fly to. Sometimes its a short hop, other times its on the other side of the world. To me the most important factor on what I fly is usually the quality of the aircraft being simulated. As a result, there are a lot of PMDG aircraft in the hanger. Now that the NGX is out I'll probably be using that quite a bit on some shorter flights. While I'm really more of a Boeing flyer, I love the PMDG MD-11 and the Concorde that Flight Sim Labs did. In fact, Flight Sim Labs is working on an A320 that should be excellent once it is completed. Will it equal what the NGX represents in terms of quality? Time will tell, but based on the facts already released on their A320 project and the quality of the Concorde, I'm sure it will be very close to the NGX in quality. They have announced this is the first of an Airbus series being developed, but what is next after the A320 is unknown. I think it would be great for PMDG to turn out excellent Boeing aircraft and FSL to prodruce great Airbus aircraft. That way everyone can get what they are wanting. I must admit though, I can't wait for the 777 to come out. Milton Kuser

The last real long haul I flew was EHAM-TNCC ... somewhere around 11 hours... I left it unattended and sort of miscalculated... came back and I had shot past TNCC, and was off the Pacific coast of Colombia with barely enough fuel to sputter in to some 4000-foot runway in the middle of nowhere... One that really [irritated] me off... I had just started using FSX in Windows 7, and knew nothing of UIAutomationCore.dll issues... and I crashed literally on final after about ten hours of flying Moscow-Vladivostok...

My Current Flight Sim Setup: She ain't much to look at, but she's got it where it counts.

i guess the answer to this question is 'each to their own' :) I too can't understand why some flyers will only ever fly at 1x sim rate for 13 hours.....but hey 'each to their own' I'm with you though. I absolutely love a/c but my main thrills are the planning, take offs and landings. Thats why I'm glad the NGX came out so I can do the short domestic routes that I've flown on IRL so many times. also, I have three kids and a F/T job so my playing time is limited. but again...'each to their own'. :) I too would like to see more short-haul a/c and am looking forward to the Dash8. I'm also hoping PMDG do a good ATR42/72 as well (yes I know Flight1 did it...have you seen it??? yucks!!).

What I always do with a long haul flight is that I go to bed after the plane is in cruise or everything has been set up properly. With ASE and FSUIPC correctly set , I got no problem at all. And i just wake up in the morning and land the plane. haha! I love it!!

Its just that feeling of having a greaser at your destination. That feeling of satisfaction.

What would you prefer? A Supercarrier or a Frigate? Same concept really. Man likes big machines happy.png
Well, some do. Some don't. I'd probably prefer the frigate :-) Seriously. For me personally, there is more fun in short- to medium-haul flights. Thus way I can keep it realistic and immersive for the time it takes.Setting up a 12h long-haul and going to bed between reaching cruise level and TOD is just not my thing. I'm a reality freak to the maximum extent that can be achieved within FSX.Plus: There's currently no actual or prospective real-world 777 operator that I'd be interested in replicating in FSX, apart maybe from Lufthansa Cargo which has a couple of 777F's on order.

That sucks, but you really should install Autosave and have it save the flight every 5 minutes, this way you can at least recover and continue. I say 5 minutes because if you do it every minute there are reports that you may have stutters although I have not personally experienced that. Mark.

I can get that feeling a lot faster and more often by flying a tight schedule of short/medium hops through bad weather.

I do longest flight I did was a YSSY-KLAX. Boring! I usually do 1hour flights and love to use the J41 to do regional. Been learning the 737 lately.

Everyone should do as they please. Me? I've done short hauls in long haul planes. My favorite NGX livery is the Flying 101 livery. I fly it on US domestic routes. The times I've done genuine longhauls (KEWR-PHNL, PHNL RJAA) I will always compress time. I know some of the more hardcore simmers are gasping right now ("OMG! Flying 101 is a African Livery! It could never fly domestic US routes! ARGHHHH!!!!"), but the point is: We do what makes us happy with our purchases. To each their own...

i once did a flight with the 747 from YSSY-YMML. I think it is actually done every so often by QF.

I''m one of the few ppl who fly long hauls on a regular base actually and why i do? well even tho it can be very boring i just love the feeling after landing at some far away airport knowing that i crossed half across the globe(yeah i do flights like that as well) it''s just a feeling i can''t really explain maybe i am a lazy guy i don''t do short hops that often because it means higher workload lol i can imagine that ppl don''t understand it though i mean looking at a monitor for 8+ hours (i don''t do that as well haha)

RJAA to EHAM was my longest commercial, EGLL to YSSY was my longest ever and is the longest in the real world
