What is the obsession with the Autoland?

Featured Replies

There seems to be so many theads on the AutoLand. Why are you guys so obsessed with it? I thought the whole purpose of buying a plane as complex as the 737-NGX was to learn to fly like a real world pilot? In the real world the majority of the time planes are landed manually by the pilots and most pilots do not even like using the autoland. If you can't land a 737-800 manually you can forget about flying the Heavies. (767, 747, MD11).

I agree. I only autoland when the weather requires it and usually its been a while since my last attempt and I need to run to the manual to double check that my procedures are correct. Last autoland btw was 2 months ago flying the ConcordeX into Dubai in the middle of a wicked sand storm.....0/0 that day. Mark.

We've landed manually since FS1. For the first time we can enjoy realistc full automated flght. That's why I autoland.

People just like to watch the operation.. Good entertainment for the whole family..I land manually most of the time. I can manually land almost anything.. :)So it's definitely not a requirement.

Hand fly the beast, she is so nice to hand fly, not done an autoland yet, will do when hte weather requires though.

I guess people are wanting everything to work as advertised, i don't think anybody would buy the plane, go through the start-up, taxi, take-off and then switch over to the autopilot and become little more than systems administrators. On the other hand...well who knows maybe that's something they enjoy.

I thought we want to explorer all options provided the plane offers as if you stop and think to yourself for a second you know that anyone can pretty much hand fly a approach and landing, disconnect the AP and land the damn plane! (with exemptions maybe not the smoothest) BUT a autoland has requirements and steps. So there would be more confusion within a community with a autoland then hands on flying. Also autoland happen in perfect weather to test the systems every 'X' amount of landings! Pretty condescending question but I guess your the god simmer! No to mention most of the confusion has been what equipment you need to do autoland too. plus I rather get comfortable with the plane before I'm faced with CATIII weather. personally I've only done one autoland out of about 20+ landings. I'd have to say it not a community obsession but rather confusion as past plane have not been so up to spec and the introduction of the Collins MCP.

It is possible... so I'd like to do it... and many other things, too! Despite that real pilots don't do it often, a real one told me that it is really thrilling to let the plane autoland in low visibility. He enjoyed it really much. So do I in the NGX!

Last autoland I did was with the NG. Don't think the main gear would've survived after that. Had something crazy like a 65 knot headwind landing at EGLL. But I manually land otherwise

There's no fun in clicking a few virtual buttons and autolanding, about a dull as it gets for me. Manual landing all the way even with low visibility, that what the ILS is for. Having said that, after some wine it can come in handyAngel.gif Chris Farrell

I don't think they do! In any case I love NGX's autoland. It's like a magic world for me! Everything goes smooth by itself ! I just sit and watch :)

Well in my opinion the landing is the best part of the flight period. When your able to bring the plane down manually and grease the landing that is the most rewarding part. Especially when you watch the replays. Although I am going to have to start using FS Recorder I guess cause there is no animation in FSX Replay.

I think I find it fascinating how automated a fly can be ...You can land nearly any plane by hand, but there are so few ones with autolanding working so great ... but after a few dozen autolands one have seen enough and landing the plane by hand now :)

Trust me autolands are rare in the real world. Only used in bad weather and low visiblity. I gurantee you none of of the pilots in the video below were autolanding. LOL.gif

Landing actually could the worst part! Some pilots after bad landing may have sleepless nights and damaging egos :D
