Active Sky SP3 is out...

Featured Replies

Nice, getting it now.

Is this program totally amazing? Will it blow default weather out of the water? I've already got FEX so I don't need any textures... What I'm looking for is more realistic real time weather, something to get rid of that annoying fog/haze layer but allows it to still be hazy, and the annoying wind shifts that happen.

Yes, but that isn't that hard to do. I like it, wouldn't fly without it.... Much easier to edit the weather as well !! G

Active Sky is a great utility. I have been using some version of it for several years. I wouldn't fly without it either.

1. Yes2. Yes3. It gives you the option of either keeping the haze layer, keeping the haze layer while producing an actual fog layer, or removing the haze layer while producing an actual fog layer.4. You can have real-time weather, or it can produce the weather that occurred in any past date you entered.5. Hurricanes/Cyclones are rendered as independent weather systems, and works very well.6. ASE can either smooth wind changes for you, but the global weather itself ends up being "homogenized" to match the wind. Or, you could simply use the actual weather while using the wind-smoothing in the registered version of FSUIPC. The latter version works much, much better IMO, while rendereing accurate weather systems. I absolutely never fly without ASE running. One of the core FSX essentials in my book. I use just the default cloud textures and the result is still marvelous. Also, the post-purchase customer support is first rate. I recently had some issues with ASE that eventually was traced to a recent FSX re-installation/repair that did not properly re-install SimConnect system folders. Taking ownership and removing the old SimConnect folders before reinstalling FSX + Acceleration did the trick.

Another feature nobody mentioned is the texture snapshot system which allows the user to save the currently loaded textures as part of a theme to use with specific weather. I combine textures from X-Graphics, FEX, and REX and save my favorites as themes using the snapshot feature of ASE. This allows me to use sky and cloud themes from FEX, water and airport textures from REX, and Sun, Moon roads and rails from X-graphics or any combination I decide to save; works like a charm.

Hi All, Thanks for your support!

Hi All, Thanks for your support!
Haha no kidding... The tribe has spoken! I'm going to think about it... it's the Revolution product right?http://www.hifitechi...e-sky-evolution Does it work with external limiter, any resource hit? Does it run in the background? Could someone tell me their three favorite and least favorite (if any exist) things about the program?

I really enjoy it. The only issues I have with it aren't too big and honestly I haven't spent much time looking into them to see if it's a setting issue or a texture issue. These are: 1. Cumulus clouds are constantly being positioned into the ground and mountains. In Southern Cali where I live we have a constant marine layer of fog near the coast west of the mountains and ASE, I believe, depicts this as a bunch of puffy clouds on top of the ground. It looks really bad and nothing like a marine layer. Also in areas of mountains, clouds are constantly inside the mountains. It looks pretty bad since they flicker a lot. 2. I get vertical clouds. I don't know if this is ASE or possible REX that is messing up with this one but it looks icky! 3. Every now and then about 10' above the ground on landing my plane will flip over instantly. I've had it happen only five times in all my flying and I haven't tracked down this issues but I also haven't had it happen since using settings I've gotten from the ASE forums. Other than those quibbles that I'd like to eventually fix, I love the product and it's one of the 'must haves' that I won't fly without. Oh a minor one: I'd like it to auto-run when Windows starts hidden in the background as a service.

Hi Timmer, 1. Fog is not depicted using cumulus clouds, but based on the visibility. Also, try upping your Status cloud slider in ASE. We cannot control where FS draws clouds and FS is not aware of where individual mountains are located. Sometimes in the real world clouds actually touch mountains as well. 2. Would like to see a screen shot of that! 3. You can auto run ASE at Windows start up by having the ASE.exe file in your Windows startup folder. 4. Are you using Build 647? I know you are not bashing, but I just wanted to address a few of your concerns.

1. Use a higher ratio of Stratus clouds under the Cloud options. I live and fly in Northern Cali (SF Bay Area) and it made a big difference. Also looks much better. 2. I've seen vertically stretched clouds only in the extreme southern and northern latitudes. Think it may be an issue with how FSX renders textures at these latitudes. Everywhere else they look good. 3. Had that happen a couple of times long ago. Don't think that has anything to do with ASE, though, and it only happened at modified airports. The only issue I have with ASE is I wish that proper supercells were rendered, with all the associated cloud types and dynamics that make a supercell. Other than that I really have no gripes at all with ASE. It's a real gem. EDIT: Sorry JSkorna. You posted as soon as I posted. Didn't mean to shout over your post.

ASE Is Great! If you don't have it, get it! The support is amazing. they where nice enough to send me SimConnect Files I needed personalized with my IP address after I was having problems. Jim S is a very good guy and he's quick to deliver Support and the program is always being updated when needed and HI FI deserves a lot of business.

Hello Jim. I have screenshots of the first two issues above. I can PM them to you or post them here or in your forum. I haven't tried the newest build but I will tonight. I will definitely try the stratus ratio slider. I believe I'm using your .ini file settings but I'll double-check, too. Thank you for the helpful replies.

The vertical cloud thing is something no one, be it ASE or REX has control over. It's been discused many times here and on the REX forum and its just a fault of how FSX renders a cloud on occasion and there isn't anything we can do about it. In fact, i've had it happen without using REX and ASE.Have you checked your wake turbulence setting to see if it is what is causing your plane to flip over?
