Another Microsoft Flight forum closure

Featured Replies

First it was FSDeveloper that closed their Flight forum because of speculation. Now it is the Orbx FTX Flight forum that Orbx CEO John Venema has announced is being closed (at least for now). I guess speculation just doesn't cut it on most forums. http://www.orbxsyste...-forum-closure/

First, came the rumour (or not) about developers getting screwed (I mean locked out of Flight) and after that (2 or 3 days ago maybe more) Aerosoft took their Flight's thread away and replaced it by this one, now Orbx closed their own Flight's thread after a FULL year of speculation by their members and gave, as a reason of the closure, ....speculations???? Well guess what....MS really did screwed the 3RD party developers out of Flight or this is the biggest hoax of all time in the flight simulation population as MS and all the developers who know what's going on about Flight are in this conspiracy together and MS told them to cut it out until Flight is released....closing a Flight thread because of speculation....really??? Posted 26 September 2011 - 07:35 AMGents,l I made the topic on MS Flight and Prepar3d invisible. Reading back I feel my comments on Prepar3d were not correct, most certainly not because I just do not know what versions of Prepar3d the images were made on (they were done on a customers system). We will this week test the latest version internally. As I said before, we welcome ANY change that will alleviate some of the major issues with the existing sim engine. And as I also said before, we will follow the customer and will create software for any platform that is used by our customers. http://forum.aerosof...prepar3d-topic/

Alain, I think you're starting to look a little too far into this. We really don't know a thing at this point.

HelloDevelopers are closing their Flight! forums because they now know the extent of the Flight! product and realise that there is not the money to be made with that platform that they were led to believe .Simmers are also losing interest/patience because of the secretive position taken by MS, a year in and we still do not fully know the scope of this Flightsim.Meanwhile we have developers talking about releasing installers for Prepar3D because it potentially gives them a clear path forward for their projects with an SDK they are well used to working with.Contrast Microsoft's lack of engagement with the Simming community to this post today in the new P3D forum by John Nicol Lead Developer of Prepar3D.(ex ACES) Hi Guys, As someone that has been involved with the community for well over 15 years (including being a member of Avsim in another guise - mainly lurking, not posting much!), I know that this is part of the grass roots of the passion and a big reason why I want to engage with you all. We WANT to engage with the community and be as open as we can because the team is just as passionate about the product as you are. Having a strong and vibrant development and user community is important to push the boundaries of the product and make it even better. If we are collaborative, we can concentrate on building the core product and let others worry about the majority of the cool widgets. (We will still make cool widgets though!) Thank you for reaching out to the developers that we haven't been able to engage with yet. The great thing is that there are so many! The bad thing for my calendar and meeting planning is that there are so many! For those that are out there, feel free to send me a note at the Prepar3D website, or post your questions as well if there is anything we can do to assist. Thanks again! Regards,John NicolPrepar3D P.S. Word Not Allowed, I will make a special installer just for you..... just bring a few thousand friends!

The forums get closed because some folks insist on weaving conspiracies. It's sad...Take off the tinfoil hats guys.

I'll bet you anything the Flight's forum at Avsim will stay open....2 & 2 together.

2 & 2 together.
;) What does that even mean?I know these Insinuations are cute and fun.But they are damaging...FS Developer did the right thing. Arno wasn't going to have it.The most culpable member wasn’t even a developer. He was someone with a bone to pick...and disrupted any serious Flight discussion.

I took 2 & 2 out of my post.

The forum here needs to stay in order to keep all of this stuff in one place. Keeps things clean elsewhere.Besides, it makes it easy for me when I need a humor break!

We closed the Flight forum because we are sick and tired of the speculation, rants and nonsense associated with Flight (Alain being a prime example). Here's another reason. We are a business which makes money from selling addons for open platforms such as FSX. Until Flight becomes a known entity and there is an SDK published, we would be fools to commit any resources to it. I think every other developer in the FSX world feels exactly the same way.Of course, we remain enthused about what we see from their screenshots and videos of Hawaii. We have been talking openly to Lockheed Martin for eighteen months and we embrace their open, community facing communication and transparency, and their ongong development of the engine and SDK. So for us it is a no-brainer to embrace P3D as another platform to allow us to achieve incremental revenues from the commercial and academic markets. We will be announcing cross-grade licensing very soon.My advice is to simply enjoy viewing the Flight screenshots and videos which MS release at their own pace, without reading between every single line of every press release. Flight will be what it will be. It really does look superb and I am sure it will be a lovely flight experience for everyone when it is finally released. Now please, don't *speculate* on my words I've just posted. There are no conspiracy theories and I said it in black and white: until we can make money from Flight we're focusng on platforms where we can. Simple as that :)

Cheers,

John Venema

We closed the Flight forum because we are sick and tired of the speculation, rants and nonsense associated with Flight (Alain being a prime example). Orbx is a great company with great addons and with nothing but great members but i don't remember last time i posted on Orbx flight's forums....

We really don't know a thing at this point.
We know quite a bit, some more than others... but a few simply refuse to acknowledge what we do know. There is clear dissension amongst the developers over something to do with Flight, what that something is.... is where the speculation begins. But there are more pieces of the puzzle out there than many, such as you want to admit... Everything I have posted here is simply my opinion and assessment of the situation as we know it. I do know more than one developer personally who is clearly upset over something. What that something is, they won't say due to non disclosure agreements they are part to. And I respect that. But talking to these folks its clear something has changed in the MS Flight landscape and many do not like it.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
