Microsoft Flight: Hawaii Only

Featured Replies

+1 Mike, some peoples will see only what they want to see if that fit with what they want, everything else is discarted. They want Flight on DVD including the whole world in high definition and as detailed as Hawaii on 10GB.... I remember when Flight was announced I was the first one to say that MS was using the same engine and DX9, that we will have to buy our addons from the market store, no boxed addons and that MS was doing all that to prevent piracy (you can all look at my old post)...I almost got crusified, now how many here think that Flight will use a brand new engine out of the box or that you will be able to buy boxed addons for Flight knowing that MS will have a store up and running for Flight...not that many anymore if none. After you add all the clues together, does it look like a duck, does it walk like a duck and does it quack like a duck?

Mathijs over at Aerosoft is pretty bitter towards Microsoft as are developers from ORBX. This is vastly opposed to all the Microsoft butt kissing that went on prior to the release of FSX. Something is obviously up and developers are not happy about it. Even being under NDA notice that there is absolutely NO excitement by anyone regarding Flight. Even being under NDA developers can still express many things about what their plans are and how Flight will allow them to deliver enhanced products without breaking NDA. Remember that even before FSX was released and developers were still under NDA there was a lot of buzz and many developers had already expressed that they will be dropping dev for FSX! None of it came true, but hey, at least there was some excitement. With Flight, nothing, not a peep, just crickets chirping and sickening repetitive screenshots of Hawaii.
After the initial explosion of angry developers a few months back, you're right, its been nothing... not even any perfectly legal, ambiguous statements expressing excitement about the upcoming project.Instead all we get are more shots of Hawaii and the occasional disgruntled developer who adds his or her name to the long list of other disgruntled developers. If MS is releasing a true closed game, with limited coverage... where you must visit them to buy any new planes or scenery for the sim, then it should be clear to them by now. Reading all the forums that it will be a failure as hardcore simmers while simply stick to FSX and hang their hopes on XP10.Personally I hope MS is just being extremely secretive about it, but I have my doubts...An example is Apple and the newest iPhone 4S release.Everyone including the press was speculating the iPhone 5 was coming out, we even had supposed pictures of the elusive critter. But no one knew anything about it... nothing, nada... in the end there was a very good reason too... there wasn't any iPhone 5, only the iPhone 4S which everyone was saying didn't exist...My point is, the evidence is right there in front of us... just as it was with the iPhone 4S, yet so many refuse to see it...Until MS comes out and shows us definitive proof this sim will be a global sim, complete with SDK and open for payware and freeware authors then all I see is yet more pics of Hawaii and more angry developers...

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Exactly, threads about Flight were taking down from some forums, now Orbx is pushing Prepar3D and Aerosoft is pushing XP-10...HELLO!!

Can you blame them?Going where they know the money will eventually be... there and with FSX... I hope were all wrong, but I think FLIGHT will be one for the gamers and XBox crowds... while P3D and XP10 along with continued support for FSX by add on devs will be for us hardcore simmers.

In all honesty i can't.
Below are system specs for Flight running on high and low settings. Notice that the Hard Drive space required is 10GB.FSX Hard Drive space requirements is 14GB.Take On Helicopters (a region-specific modern flight game) Hard Drive space requirements is 20GBThe only conclusion that I come up with is Flight will not be a global sim. (I hope I eat my words, by the way)
I wouldn't make an assumption based on just that. Have a look at the Elder Scrolls series:Oblivion: 4.6GB required HDD spaceSkyrim: 5.8GB required HDD spaceSkyrim looks absolutely huge when compared to Oblivion, and the other big RPG of this year: The Witcher 2, which requires 16GB. I think the key is compressed (or the lack of) high resolution textures.

None of it came true, but hey, at least there was some excitement. With Flight, nothing, not a peep, just crickets chirping and sickening repetitive screenshots of Hawaii. Another thing to bear in mind is that XP10 which will have much less object texture diversity than FSX, no buildings at any airports outside Seattle, sparce AI, no airport vehicles, etc is STILL going to be 80 GIGABYTES to display the whole world. Microsoft is saying that you need 10 GIGABYTES for Flight and that includes all the different ground textures no longer needed in XP10 as well as all the regional building textures that will not be included in XP10 out of the box, to say nothing of 25,000 airports with buildings, AI traffic, airport vehicles, etc? Sorry that's impossible that XP10 will be 8 times larger to display less scenery objects than Flight if Flight covered the same geographical area as XP10 (i.e. the whole world). You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the writing on the wall. I'm not sure what's up with Redmond Washington now-a-days, maybe they are trying to bankrupt the company? Purchase Skype for $8 Billion = Fail. FSX DX10= Fail. Windows Phone 7 = Fail. Microsoft-Nokia Alliance = Fail. Windows Vista = Fail. Microsoft Hawaii Simulator = Impending Failure. Microsoft has released new screenshots for November. The screenshots look STUNNING! However, here we go with pictures of Hawaii. I am no longer the least bit excited or interested in seeing screen shots of Hawaii. How can anyone doubt that there is nothing interesting to show outside of Hawaii? At this point if Austin over at Laminar Research puts his ego aside, listens to the community, and works with all the developers to deliver a full rich simulator that can handle more than 20 AI aircraft, has proper ATC, airport buildings, and real landclass and terrain mesh, he is in a very unique position to kill off the Microsoft franchise once and for all. With the poor job than Microsoft did on FSX, Flight just might be the nail in Microsoft's own coffin when it comes to the MSFS franchise. It's pretty sad.
Hey Mike,I seem to recall you reporting yourself as a cfi. You are aware that cap promotes you to a Captain with Cfi credentials?Geof Applegate Captain CAP (almost cfi but didn't do it)...

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

I see a good way of delivering all the data with good quality scenery , a system that has been used before by other developers by doing things in diferent packages, hell we pay top dollar eveytime a new addon comes out and i dont see anyone beeing mad about that ??? so why not get a base install and later have to pay for the rest????

@ meshman, I understand your logic but trust me, leaks happen.

(on a side note : im also looking for that person that may lose their Iphone 5 in a bar to see what it looks likeLOL.gifLOL.gifLOL.gif )

Hi Captain Geof! I knew that I'd be in good company! I'll PM you....Mike

The key is those worlds are not as big as the earth. It may take you a few hours to walk from point A to B in ultima ... it will take you several months to walk across North America.

Does anyone else find it interesting that MS know how much HD space Flight will use?If the 10GB HD space is an accurate figure (and not just some random number) then it would seem that MS are close to having a final product.

Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

Wow... so wrong on so many levels.
