December 16, 201114 yr It was only by chance this morning that I was looking on the Aerosoft website and noticed the advert for the newly released X-Plane 10. To be honest, I have never really been interested in any of the past X-Plane products and have been a loyal FS9 user for many years.About a year ago I did try to convert to FSX but like so many other people my system was not powerful enough to handle it, despite my desktop PC being only a few years old and I have no intention of changing it.So it was back to FS9 and decided that if I cannot have FSX standards then I would build up FS9 as best as I could with good quality payware products. And that's when I noticed X-Plane 10 and when I saw the graphics, in particular the scenery, my jaw dropped. OMG!I maybe wrong here and this is where I would like some feedback, but this does like a fantastic product, it seems to be on a par with FSX, maybe even better. What I want to know is how does X-Plane 10 perform on intermediate PC's? Is it like FSX and needs a powerful system or will it run as well as FS9 does?I am currently downloading the demo as I type this to see for myself how it performs but I did that with FSX and ended up buying it, installing it one day and uninstalling it the next! I don't want to do that again! Then of course there is the new Microsoft Flight which will be out in he near future, so maybe I should wait for that and see what happens then it will be a battle between Microsoft Flight and X-Plane 10! December 16, 201114 yr Author Andy, you have hit the nail right on the head, there are indeed too many simulators coming out, not to mention weather related add-ons such as the new Active Sky 2012 and Zinertech World Environment 2012 products. You buy one thing then before you know it there is a new product/version out and your's is out of date already! Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Packard Bell imedia S3210. December 16, 201114 yr My understanding is that Active Sky 2012 is for FSX only. I don't know about Zinertech since I don't use their product. I do know that many users were concerned that new products would stop coming forth for FS9. I personally would rather wade through the options as opposed to not having any to wade through. Just a thought.
December 16, 201114 yr Interesting post. I love FS9 and have no immediated plans to move. Andy has touched on the fact that a lot is about to happen in the Flight Simulator market. So these are exciting times indeed. In fact we are at an interesting cross roads, probaly the most significant in Flight Sim history, with a lot of people willing to take the plunge down one road, but most (including me) kind of sitting on the fence. Bearing in mind that I skipped FSX, I am still waiting and hoping that M/S Flight will deliver and this would be a logical step up/forward for me. Sadly, there is no definate guarentee exactly what Flight will be. If Flight is good, that is good enough for me. If not, it will be looking at X-Plane or FSX. December 16, 201114 yr Heck I am just warming up to FSX after all these years! If I had bought FS2002, I would have skipped FS2004 and probaly would be where you are now Al. Precisely that question have I been considering for some weeks during which I have tried out the demo. And I think I have about an intermediate PC,AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHz4 Gb RAMNVIDIA GTS 250 1 GbWin 7 x64I use FSX for VFR flight and intended to use FS9 for IFR flight. Could XPlane be better option for the IFR?My impression so farI really like the clouds and real time weather in XPLane. Better than both FS9 and FSX + REX. Also XPLane offers some realism we won't have in MS FS like slooped runways.Problem is my system isn't powerful enough. I will have to turn off essentially everything else for that real time weather and volumetric clouds. For now I think it makes more sense to go to FSX instead. Problem here is that I have it on a SSD and space is running out. But I think I could squeeze in PMDG 737NGX for example
December 16, 201114 yr Author The main reason why I posted this topic was because I was so overwhelmed by how incredible the scenery is, especially the houses and more importantly the smooth flowing traffic along the roads. Having watched a couple of videos on Youtube I am amazed how fantastic it looks, the roads and highways with all the signs is just breathtaking. Now that might just be in certain places in the US, I don't know. Living in the UK I don't know if that amount of detailed scenery and effects will be implemented, I would certainly be interested to know. Surely that amount of detail isn't replicated worldwide? Is it???? Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Packard Bell imedia S3210. AMD Athlon II X 3 425 Processor 2.70 GHz. 3 GB RAM. External hard drive 1TB. December 16, 201114 yr No PMDG, no PT Tu154m, no iFly737, etc. No thanks. For me it's that simple. Gavin Barbara Over 10 years here and AVSIM is still my favourite FS site :-)
December 16, 201114 yr the houses and more importantly the smooth flowing traffic along the roadsThese are nice features to have. But it all depends on what is essential for you in your simulation. If I were to drop my hundreds of excellent addons, systems, tweaks and portions of knowledge for just that, I would be nowhere.A month ago I bought a new computer. A very good one in todays stadards (see my signature). I was planning to stay with FS9 but also to start using FSX on a regular basis, mainly for some addons not offered for FS9).You know what the result is? I do have FSX installed, with all possible addons I could get (for free, for having bought FS9 versions or for good promo discounts), waiting for me to fly.But I found myself back in FS9 allmost exclusively. Looks like I just didn't get the hook for the fourth time even though my system seemed theoretically capable of running FSX. Reasons?1. I believed the looks of FSX will now kill my FS9. But they didn't. FS9 with UTE, GE, REX and other addons still does look soooo great.2. FPS - although quite acceptable in FSX (good in the air, not so good at airports), they are twice or more as high in FS9, even though my FSX has many sliders set mid or even left and in FS9 every option is set to maximum. Important? Yes, especially on takeoff and finals.3. Addons - though I could have done the maths before, I have just realised how much (and I mean MUCH) I would have to spend to get my FSX enhancement level to what makes me satisfied. Impossible for my wallet! And since there are still some great addons to come for FS9, I will rather keep my limited FS budget for those.4. Tweaks and learning curve - I miss free time. I know FS9 very well now, but trying to fall in love with FSX I discovered you have to learn each sim again: new options, old habits, new tweaks, etc. I feel no power for it.So what about X-Plane? Or MS Flight? At the moment I am not interested. For the reasons similar to the above. Why fix something that's not broken? Then, you might ask, why just not stick to FS9 and repeatedly try other sims? Well, in an ideal world, or rather mind, it would make perfect sense. But I am just a human simmer.I love dreaming of what I have and love but also about having more, better and newer. Like any kid, even though I am 40, lol. I started with FS4 (late 1980's) and it is hard to stop me rolling. But FS2004 seems to be a high summit my rolling stone has climbed, and the view from there is so beautiful, it is hard to leave it even though there are other tops on the horizon...
December 16, 201114 yr I've said this before and I'll say it again: FSX is just broke. Lousy coding or something, but it's a 6 year old sim and the newest hardware still can't run it a lick so that it matches up to FS9 one iota. Nobody writes code that STILL can't be easily run 6 years of hardware evolution later. Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. December 16, 201114 yr http://www.prepar3d.com/ is the extension of FSX that Lockheed-Martin licensed from MS. They took over where MS stopped this project intended for commerical sim use. A lot of the FSX aircraft and add-ons work with it. I noticed that there is even an FSUIPC bridge. Lockheed is busy recoding the core engines to increase performance and get rid of the inherited 'faults' from former FS versions. The sticker price price of $499 might be avoided if you want to get a monthly license at $20.Regarding X-Plane I read an interview with develepor Austin Meyer in the current (Nov-Dec) issue of Computer Pilot. Regarding AI he talked about using flyable aircraft for it being feasible by using multi-processor multi-core PCs for distributed processing having each core handle very few AI. I would think if I interpret that correctly that the average user not having a stack of linked pcs would mostly likely limit AI considerably. If that's the case of needing a pc stack to get dense AI into X-Plane than prepare3D becomes more interesting. As for me I find FS9 with good add-on scenery, aircraft, and traffic packages sufficient as my view is out of the cockpit and do not need detailed AI.
December 16, 201114 yr Hell no. To answer your initial question. Didn't even need to read the opening post. Some nice ideas in in X-plane but it stoped there for me. Any one ever played CitiesXL 2010... Notice anything similar? The autogen. Which I liked... But that was it.
