Enhancing Oahu island

Featured Replies

Hello,A few screens of my current work in project, buildings for Oahu.Real scenery made a really nice addon for this island, you can have a look at avsim review there http://www.avsim.com/pages/1211/RealScenery/Oahu.htmlYou may know that we can generate xplane scenery files from open street map data, the problem for Oahu is that there is nearly no osm buildings data there.I recently managed to found some governmental cadastral data then converted it to a file format that osm2xp can read. It's far from perfect (no height data , some parts of the island are empty), but it's a very good starting base.A few screens with fraps fps counter so you can see the performance impact.I'm using totaly insane number of objects, with a lod of 85000.85000 is a totaly crazy setting, a "normal" one would be something like 40000, i just used this setting to make those screens, so the fps loss should be smaller with "normal" settings. Please keep in mind that textures can be easily customized, i'm using my basic texture set which is made with south of France in mind.before---afterbefore---afterbefore---afterbefore---afterbefore---afterA few more random screens:screenshot1 screenshot2 screenshot3 screenshot4screenshot5 screenshot6 screenshot7 screenshot8screenshot9 screenshot10 screenshot11 screenshot12 screenshot13 screenshot14 screenshot15 screenshot16screenshot17 screenshot18 screenshot19I'm gonna work on the data to add height info, now if people are interested working on this area, i think it would be nice to make some 3D models for the skycrappers.I think this area is perfect for a nice community work , it's a small area , there's a nice photoreal scenery for it, and we now have some buildings data to fill the island.Ben

Wow - that looks very impressive already. Might be even better with trees added.

Very nice work!

Excellent Benny, this is exactly what this scenery has been missing. Looks great.

Great work, and very nice shots ! :(

You can grab the file here http://scenery.osm2xp.com/north%20america/us/hawaii.zipI'll update it on the next days / weeks.I'll focus on fixing some big ugly polygons (the governemental data often add a big polygon instead of precise shapes of several buildings) and adding height data.I'm also looking on a way to enhance roof texture on complex shaped buildings.CheersBen

Bonjour Ben,You might remember me from another thread as the guy that can't even get the XP10 Demo running because of a glitch with certain nVidia cards. LR support folks have confirmed recently that a solution is just around the corner! In the meantime, I'm following with interest the various discussions on this forum. The result of your work demonstrated in your screenshots is very impressive. As a user 'in waiting' of XP10, I'm wondering if your screenshots are representative of XP10 ground scenery in general? And what about the clouds; are those the default XP10 clouds? If so, that too is very impressive.Thank you in advance for a comment or two!Regards,JJ (Jean-Jacques)

I am a bit under the weather at the moment but the OP has been in contact with me regarding this enhancement and I have the files. Once I feel a bit more like actually flying around I will take a proper look at this and update the Oahu review piece in the comment areas (for XP9.7).Screens look great. Very nice work and another reason to really enjoy the XP community.

Ben, that does look fantastic...I have found this site http://clss.nrcan.gc...strales-eng.php for Canada data. Could I (or anyone) use this data in the same way you have with Oahu Island, for personal use of course? It appears to just be Indian Reserves, might be something to play with. Here's what's inside the zip files.Glen

The ground scenery on those screens is from a payware that you can buy from x-aviation.So no, xplane10 isn't as pretty as a payware photoreal scenery payware.About clouds, those in my screens are from REX for xplane9 (payware addon).Xplane10 has a totaly new weather engine, in my opinion you can get really nice clouds with xp10 without addons, for an even better experience than xp9+rex.

There's still a lot to do, so it's even better if you have a look at it later.I'll add forests, work on textures ,arrange buildings placements, etc...

I had a look at this website, i think we could generate canada buildings with those files.I'm gonna have a closer look and let you know.In fact i'm pretty sure we will be able to generate scenery for the whole north america. There's a lot of gis data available on the web, i found a file with Chicago buildings yesterday (when it's nearly empty in osm). But there's a bit of work involved when using those sources (height info, tuning of polygons etc)edit:If a moderator read this topic, would it be possible to add the link to the scenery file in my first post :http://scenery.osm2xp.com/north%20america/us/hawaii.zipthanks
