February 24, 201214 yr I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the legality of taking control and you aren't licensed to. Probably breaking a few FARs there.By the way if you crash and I'm on board, who do I sue? You or the airline? No offense to anybody's skills? Just a question.Your kidding right? If I'm in a try and may live, or don't because I'm afraid of the lawyers and the FAA, resulting in certain death for me and all on board, guess which one I choose??? February 24, 201214 yr Quick question, is there lag on the vertical speed indicators on the 737's like there are in R/W Cessna 172's that I fly? February 25, 201214 yr Now here's another question! Assuming all went well and your the hero to all aboard, would you count yourself lucky, and wait for assistance on the runway? Or would you feel confident enough to taxi? Remember you'd be dealing with a tiller which is not well simulated in FS (If at all). For me I choose the former, I think it would be too easy to run on the grass, if you're not use to it. Also the reality is I don't think ATC would even allow it!! For me I choose the former, I think it would be too easy to run on the grass, if you're not use to it. Also the reality is I don't think ATC would even allow it!!Pretty sure ATC or whatever regulatory agency got involved, would tell you to land and come to a full stop on the runway. I'm not positive they would want you to actuate the reversers. So if you were in the NYC area I could see them vectoring you for JFKs RW 13R with autobrakes on max. Additionally, you would have a squad of emergency vehicles trailing behind you as you decelerated. (Depending on why the pilots were "inop", you might have other types of vehicles on your 6).As for crowded airspace, I'm almost positive ATC would stack'em up (holds) and clear everything out for you. February 25, 201214 yr I think the correct question should be:Would we stand a better chance of landing than someone with no experience?Probably yes,but not definitely, depends on how you handle stress. Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry. February 25, 201214 yr On a more serious note though of course, even with all my experience and years of flying, all I'm used to of late is Airbus, now say the A340 or even perhaps the A380 I might give a go at hand flying, but any other aircraft, Boeing, Embraer ect, and I'd even be sticking with the autoland. There's no need to be a hero when it comes to this sort of thing...Capt. Rónán O Cadhain. Rónán O Cadhain.
February 25, 201214 yr I think I MIGHT be able to do it if a) the flightplan was fully put in (STAR chosen prior to Departure, but apparently that doesn't happen very often?) :( I left it on AP the entire time, all the way to a full stop. c) perfect VFR weather, and no crosswind d)plane was perfectly functional...but no way would I trust myself to taxi a 737, thats way to much work to handle! :wink:So pretty much everything you guys have said...
February 26, 201214 yr I know I could do it, as it has happened to me already... It took place on the 4th Aug 2011. I was on a short flight from EDDF to EGSS. The 1st officer had phoned in sick (as usual) and all the air stewardess were all hungover from a Hen night, so they were all seducing the captain, so his mind (and other parts of his body), were on other things. So as I was the only coherent person onboard they asked me to fly and land. The Flight number was Lufthansa 737NGX..NGX, NGX, NGX, NGX ........Oh sorry, I just woke up from my dream. The NGX is bloody dam real, I was thinking I was doing it in reality... February 26, 201214 yr In all honesty...The guys who are saying they could do it would be the most likey to CRASH big time...too much confidence + the adrenaline of having a potential lawn dart mean you are more likey to go...oh yeah I know how to do this, and do it wrong and bam upside down 737.A person with no expirence is more likey to listen to and follow instructions far better than somebody who thinks they know what they are doing
February 26, 201214 yr I would think handflying would be out of the question. If this scenerio came up I am sure you would be directed to the largest airport with the best weather possible with autoland. Using autoland and help from the ground most of us would probably be able to get it to the ground if we did not panic and try to do more than we are capible of.All this is assuming the plane is level and in normal condition when the pilots for some reason can not fly... if it is out of control.... forget it, there is only about a handful of guys that post on this forum that i would give a chance in that scenerio and they are all RW pilots. February 26, 201214 yr No problem:First a double Baileys to calm the nerves.Second your friendly nieghborhood 737 pro calmly talking through "push this and that button" to set up autoland.Third beg a cigarette (I don't smoke lol) and light the smoking lamp for everyone else....second hand smoke be damned in this circumstance.Fourth extract promise for lifetime Queen Mary 2/ship of choice/rail first class passage as I would not set foot in another aircraft ever again.**edit**In memory of the miserable global coach flights I have endured flying for business extracting a promise to stop fibbing about seat pitch and DVT potential and make the seats comfortable would be in order too! February 26, 201214 yr Not the question I know...How do we suggest the cabin crew should announce this to the passengers and seek volunteering pilot talents? "Hum!!! Ladies and Gentlemen, we would like to know if anyone among you would feel like trying to land the da... airplane as our pilots are not in a condition doing it by themselves at this time?" or"Ladies and Gentlemen, our pilots would be happy to welcome any PMDG qualified desktop pilot in the cockpit (Wilco and Ariane pilots should preferably abstain), please apply to the cabin crew urgently..." or perhaps"Hi folks! (an american airline...) would anyone care replacing our pilots while they recuperate in the first class cabin, English language spoken only, previous piloting experience preferred or reputable desktop simulation hardcore expert!"More suggestions on our part may help airlines preparing their cabin crew to such a situation!
