Avsim Flight review is up!

For now, if Flight is not what you like, why not go to Microsoft's facebook page, and make a civil request for a feature. If the comments are in favor, the MGS crew may well get the message, and deliver the content you want. If you don't contact them, you probably won't get it.
Dick,Nice to see you got it to work and that maybe with a little time the game might grow on you?I also think the part I quoted is sage advice for the many who want to voice an opinion or displeasure about something related to Flight. Microsoft has said they want to go with a market driven direction for development. They have a Facebook page. Polite and constructive requests from a few, maybe many thousands of users might help drive future content creation?I've not seen Microsoft's Facebook page, but have read about some of the comments made there. Seeing something other than screaming tirades might be a pleasant surprise for the people in Redmond?Lance

Perhaps AVSIM should review the available add-ons and see if they are worth the money. It is hard to fault a free product, but Microsoft now sells add-ons as well and in my opionion asking $15 for an add-on aircraft that has no radio and no working autopilot is really asking a lot from it's customers.
You still have the facts all wrong !!Great review Louis. Very well written.Fred.

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

I am puzzled that despite this footnote:
(Editor’s Note: we were told by Microsoft during media day that this is not Flight Sim 11)
It has numerous Flight Simulator 11 references. It has been well pointed out that this is NOT a continuation of the flight simulator series but a new vision of a "discontinued" (declared by MS in print) franchise.

Thanks to all who support the approach I have taken in the review. And many thanks to you, Dick, we did miss you and would have gained much from your presence. By the way, it is not too late...Really, guys, life is all about the pleasure we get from it. If you don't like Flight, nobody is forcing you and you can simply return it for your money back. Unfortunately, the guaranty insists it must be returned unopened in its original packaging. :LMAO:Best regards.Luis

Don't take my comment as a negative, I was just making an observation. But your review is very good Luis and pretty much sticks with the facts.FLIGHT is what it is, and like you just said, no one is being forced to play it.

Just making an observation here. Yes Flight is a new platform. However, I will note CPU wise, it's the same as FSX. One core does most of the work. Others stay idle (except when loading into the game from the menu, same when FSX says loading textures, autogen, scenery, etc). However, perhaps the GPU provides more smoothness and they don't need as many CPU cores doing stuff this time.

The darn thing is growing on me. I do understand a 'purist' point of view, and a feeling of betrayal due to some misleading press releases. But there is still no reason an SDK could not be produced. We'll just have to see what addon contributions are allowed for the game. I would hope there is room for freeware developers, as well as both small and large commercial developers. I understand core content may change to allow things like real weather, ATC, AI, etc... I also understand such additions will definitely make the game more difficult for wealer computers.I got it working. It runs well on my 6 year old computer. I am enjoying the game elements so far.Simulator enthusiasts might feel Flight is a waste of their time... I get that. But, flying enthusiasts may get a kick out of the game. Some of us enjoy both simulation and flying. There is room for more than one software product on most computers. It's free for download. I recommend trying it to anyone. It does uninstall quite easily if you don't want to spend time with it. I don't feel this is an issue that needs taking sides. People that don't like Flight have lots of forums here and elseware to continue discussions of the simulators they prefer.Maybe Tom needs to add a Hate forum where we can vent our dislike of things we have trouble accepting. :Idea:Dick

A forum such as "Vent Your Spleen" that only allowed for one post and no replies possible might be a good idea. That way folks who aren't interested at all won't have to read it. Only voyeurs might peek in from time to time to see what a Spleen looks like vented... :LMAO:

Excellent review. I really enjoyed reading about the different aspects of this game. Keep up the good work!

The review is a pretty decent appraisal of what and where Flight is at the moment, although to be honest, everyone will review Flight for themselves by downloding it and trying it, so the review is quite rightly more of an overview 'heads up' than a critical appraisal, and that's all it really needs to be. Any review of Flight, and especially one on Avsim, is to a large extent only going to be read by Flight Sim fans and is therefore preaching to the converted anyway. The review which matters to us Flight Simmers, and to MS, will be the one we all make for ourselves after having tried it; the subsequent 'yes or no' decision stemming from that, coupled with what DLC becomes available to pique our interest, is where the battle lines will be drawn. So the ball is, ironically, in both the consumer's - and Microsoft's - court, because we have the base sim and very nice it is too, and MS has the control it wanted, so let's just hope it is not a case of being careful what you wish for for MS, and that they are able to keep feeding the DLC machine with worthy additions to keep us interested when we've all done a lap of Hawaaii and then want to head off the edge of the map.We all know that the long term success of Flight hinges on what DLC shows up and how it is pitched price-wise, although I'm inclined to suspect that if hard core stuff shows up, it will do okay in spite of the fact that things can get pretty costly on such business models. Notwithtanding such costs, a similar business model has worked via Steam for Train Simulator 2012 (aka Railworks 3), and that's probably even more niche than a Flight Sim, although its success has been helped with frequent heavily discounted sales and bundle offers; one presumes MS will have the same thing in mind, and if they do, it could well enjoy the same healthy outlook, although a fundamental difference, and one which may be critically important for success, is that even with the tight hold Steam has on such stuff, there is still room for freelancing developers to make content, and indeed users are able to create stuff too.Fair play to MS though, and indeed as the review in question points out, it is a very nice freebie base sim and if anyone wanted to simply practice circuits and bumps, they could do that with without spending a cent. The alarm bell which may ring where that is concerned however, is that MS are not going to make money off people playing the base sim for free, so it is my guess that they are at some point going to have to open the door to developers a little wider than they might have wished.Al

It's a fact that a lot of people are disappointed in Flight, and this should be reflected in the score of any review. Instead the review begins by saying that all the negativity is undeserved and all the critics are wrong and are just "resisting change". That's not balanced, that's being biased.
I disagree.Reviews are usually 1 person's opinion. Why should what other people think affect HIS review? That's just silly.Reviews, by nature, are going to be a little biased. Opinions usually are.

... you right Mathijs. However, I have seen some people (I can't call them "developers") who are trying to make money with sceneries for FSX (you sell few of those on Aerosoft) who are worst than freewares for 12-15 EUR...

Okay everyone, everywhere, not just this thread: This forum isn't about Aerosoft or any other developer for another platform. It's about flight. Let's try once again to keep it that way. Thank you
