April 16, 201214 yr Big fan of overboardness here! Just ask my girlfriend. Bring on the overboardness. PMDG is the only reason I have this sim going the way I do. Or even at all. The scenery comes in a close second. Marc Lynn
April 16, 201214 yr Route from flightaware, city pairs taken from my VA's website, and fuel from FSBuild. Pax and cargo is default. If I could I would use the FSPassenger method to generate a PAX list + cargo, but it won't load into the NGX nicely, so I disable that part. AJ Pongress
April 16, 201214 yr I guess I also qualify in the "overboard" simmers. I'm currently building my 737-800NG 1:1 scale repliqua home cockpit. While this is in production I fly by following all the procedures to the letter. I get my flight plans from flightaware I like Westjet so I susaly fly the same routes as them. I use all related payware softwares: Topcat EFB Vroute Radar contact ASE REX FS2Crew UT2 etc. etc. I allways fly real time. No acceleration. My Nav data is allways up-to-date. I dont fly online because I find the lack of controllers very unrealistic. It's my hobby and I enjoy it very much. Chris Verner Home cockpit builder ...well trying anyway
April 16, 201214 yr Commercial Member The only thing not real on my flights are the callsign/flight number and routing. The rest I try to keep as real as possible. I particularly like flying challenging departures and arrivals that I have not flown before. The only thing I use the AP for is the cruise segment. Best regards, Robin.
April 16, 201214 yr Sometimes I get super realistic. I plan 3 or 4 day trips. Just like real world I go on pairings. I will take a leg off here and there and pretend that im not PIC. Obviously i cant just take a bunch of days off work and fly. I like to follow real time the routes on flightaware and any changes they have. I goto the same gates with the same NG variant. Obviously I can't do this every time but I try, It's kinda fun to see how you differ from the real world flight. Before I fly i spend atleast 30 mins weather planning and checking any PIREPS that are relevant. Then I use my weather program to put the weather into the sim. I then goto the gate and begin fs2crew. Call GSX for pushback and get going. I try to fly online when I can but the coverage isn't always the best up here in Canada. Live ATC is always going though. I have fun with being realistic, I always find a need to fly from the last place I flew to. It just seems wrong to teleport. Like if I want to go fly the NGX in Europe I will fly a 767 over there. Im weird like that!! Anyways hope this was a meaningful read!! All The Best! Brad Brad Cherrington [email protected] CYYC Based
April 16, 201214 yr Commercial Member I'm weird, I'll put that up front, so like everyone else's post here, it's full of my own personal quirks. Rule 1: I won't fly a route that an airline did not fly at one point, if I'm flying in that company's aircraft. Rule 2: I won't fly an aircraft in a company color that they did not at one point own. As an example, I'll still fly Concorde for BAW and AFR, and an F100 for AAL, but will not fly a USAirways NG (they had the classics, but have no NGs). Rule 3: Charters and ACMI Cargo routes (along the lines of Atlas/Polar, and so on) are okay and good for breaks from the requirements of Rule 1 above, within reason (e.g.: highly doubt you'll find a 744 charter as often as you would a 737 with Miami Air) Rule 4: No cheats are allowed. If it is not a selectable option when I fly outside of the sim, it should not be used in the sim. Examples: 'b' for auto altim setting, time compression, top down taxi views and so on (external views for the pleasantries of them are okay). Rule 5: Flights must be flown to completion (no saves/restarts unless for sim crashes). I do not assume the full dispatcher role at any point during the process, though I do the simple stuff. Basically, I don't go overboard in that I pull routes that are moderately current (currently being flown) because I can just play off their dispatcher's decisions as if they were my own. If their dispatcher changed the route that far south for the weather and I'm flying that route in a little while, I'll do the same. I generally also subject myself to random delays here and there just to keep things interesting (if flying offline). As an example, we all know how hosed the NY area gets when bad weather is around, so I'll hold myself inbound to EWR for a few laps and budget more fuel prior to departure, this is based on FlightAware info as well (it lists delays). There are my quirks. I am also one who believes that going overboard with the supposed realism is more fun that pretending to fly airliners like fighter jets, but hey... Kyle Rodgers

April 16, 201214 yr It's a bit funny (all of what was in between) of your face :) My thoughts to the letter. Mas Martin Jensen
April 16, 201214 yr The great thing about flight sim is that everyone can do what works for them. Me personally, I strive for as much realism as possible. Full IRS align, no time acceleration ever. Just the other night I did an air Berlin delivery from BFI to Berlin, a little over 10 hours, straight through. Real flight numbers and times, and I account for time zones. If the flight leaves Berlin at 0700, I'll leave at 0000 my time ect ect. But that's just my way Adam kaleniak
April 17, 201214 yr I'm very regimented in the way I fly the NGX, and other aircraft in the sim for the last 3 years, in that I only fly real world routes using the simulated aircraft. Flightaware is my friend here, since I mainly fly U.S. routes, but I will look up real world flights for the European carriers If I fly those. Some may say that isn't fun or spontaneous, but I get great satisfaction in flying the exact same waypoints, including the SID/Star, as in real life, and matching the timings almost exactly so that I experience similar weather conditions, thanks to the historical weather download feature of Active Sky Advanced. The airport city pairs I choose must use the 737 NG, as I won't fly the route if the real world carrier uses a MD-80, 757, etc, so in a way it does limit my choices, but that's just the way I like it. I do practice saved flight situations occasionally, as a nice little break from the normal intensive preflight calculations and route research that comes with my normal simming method. A.J. Domingo
April 17, 201214 yr Author Nice replies, guys. It's interesting to know what everyone does. :) i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB
April 17, 201214 yr Interesting thread. No doubt I'm the exception here, but here's a typical week night for me: Arrive home from work at 5:30-6 PM. Grab gym bag and go exercise for an hour, home before 7. My (now retired) wife has dinner on the table at 7-7:30, adter a few beers to decompress the day. Done with dinner by 8:30, dishes, cats to feed..... I usually get to sim around 9-ish. (That assumes I am not out real flying or at an occasional meeting...). By 10:30, that 6AM alarm clock starts to call, and besides I usually read for 30 minutes (actually listen to an audio-book) before sleeping..... Weekends are (at this time of year in CO) spent hiking or biking. How do you guys get time to fly FSX so realistically? Obviously I'm doing something wrong :) Thanks, Bruce ASEL, Instrument. On a bit longer flights, I usually just open my browser and go to other websites and Facebook and stuff. I don't sit there waiting. i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB
April 18, 201214 yr If I'm playing Southwest, I use routes off flightaware. I use the real flight numbers, routes, times, etc.. But.. That applies mostly to the daytime. In general, Southwest goes to sleep at about 10 PM at the average airports.. There may be a few stragglers on the long flights that get in late, but most departures are done around 10 PM or so local.. So.. If the airlines are asleep, I run the 600 BBJ, and anything can happen running it. I could fly anywhere, using my own plans, and pretty much thumbing my nose at schedules, etc.. And I'll run it into airports I would never see in the wide wide world of Southwest.. When I run the 600, I consider myself the owner of the plane, not like I'm flying for someone else.. Kind of a wannabe John Travolta type deal I suppose.. :/ So anything can happen. I might fly across town to another airport, or I might fly to Alaska.. I just spin the wheel and go. Mark Keith
April 22, 201214 yr I just use my Iron Maiden 700 all the time and fly to random destinations. Ha, I just finished painting my own Ed Force One. 900WL though. I didn't want to demote Bruce from the 757 too much :LMAO: http://imageshack.us/f/51/ef1new.jpg/
