July 31, 201213 yr I have Justflights 'real' scenery and definately wish i had bought the Horizon one instead. Also UK2000 airports are optimised to work with the Horizon version. They alsoseem to work OK with Justflights, but there is quite a colour mismatch. August 1, 201213 yr on a more positive note, the JF release didn' break the terrain map in the GPS; unlike the Horizon version. Swings & roundabouts I guess. Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
August 1, 201213 yr This time, on my new build, I installed only the vol 1. I flew further north to the Vol 2 area and actually prefered the default FSX scenery... The autogens of the default more then made up for the staid photoscenery..,.I thought. I also got Earth Simulations Alderney. Alderney is very nice...but the airport has default runway and taxiway textures.. and I just can't get myself to land on those crappy runway textures... Too bad. this is like a major scar on a pretty face. You are one very strange person. FSX default scenery and autogen is horrible. The Horizon photoscenery and high resolution terrain mesh (even without any autogen) is vastly superior to look at As for Alderney, what on Earth is wrong with the runway textures? They are perfectly fine Christopher Low AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU / 64GB DDR5-6000 RAM / 12GB Nvidia RTX 4070 Super GPU / Gigabyte X870E Aorus Elite Wifi 7 / 1+2TB Samsung Evo Plus M2 Nvme UK2000 Beta Tester
August 1, 201213 yr As for Alderney, what on Earth is wrong with the runway textures? They are perfectly fine Like I said, they look like one grey flat linolium slab for taxiway textures and generic runway textures. I have a preference for detailed custom runway textures like the recent Orbx scenery or Fly Tampa airport textures. Those are high quality custom textures. When coming in to land, my eyes are fixated on the runway and the runway marking...every other items is peripheral to that (This is true for real life landing and in the sim).... If they are the generic kind, they stick out like a sore thumb... in an otherwise high quality scenery. A payware add on airport without custom textures IMO, FAILS miserably. Although Alderny scenery is a bit more than just an airport. I realize, FSX runway textures require additional work and techniques to get it right unlike FS9... but Fly Tampa and Orbx have done it...so why not others? Even the freeware aiport that I developed I worked on getting the custom runway texture right so I cannot understand why addon Vendors would neglect this important element of a scenery. A total copout IMO. It''s like that mole on Cindy Crawford's face.. Although.. it looks cute on Cindy. LOL :) Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
August 2, 201213 yr I completely agree with you regarding your "eyes fixed on the runway" comment. The runway is the most important element of any airfield scenery. I am a beta tester for UK2000, and the first thing that I check at every new airport is to make sure that the various lines and lights are in perfect alignment. There is nothing more annoying to me than misalignments of this type (even if it's only a single light, or that the threshold arrows are very slightly offset with respect to the runway centreline). Where I differ with yourself is that I consider the default runway textures to be perfectly fine. To be fair, I have never used any ORBx products, but custom runway textures are not at the top of my list as far as airfield improvements are concerned. I use all of the Earth Simulation scenery packages (Alderney, Guernsey, Isles of Scilly, and Shawbury Fields), and I do not have a problem with any of the runways. Nevertheless, I appreciate that it matters to you. We are all different, and beauty is most definitely in the eye of the beholder :wink2: Christopher Low AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU / 64GB DDR5-6000 RAM / 12GB Nvidia RTX 4070 Super GPU / Gigabyte X870E Aorus Elite Wifi 7 / 1+2TB Samsung Evo Plus M2 Nvme UK2000 Beta Tester
August 2, 201213 yr Hello If the Alderney runway textures are in fact default then REX, AS2012 or any replacement runway textures from the library should be able to sort that out. If that does not work they are custom runway textures, just not very good ones.
August 2, 201213 yr Zack, I generally fly no higher than 3000 feet, and I fly exclusively in the UK. That being the case, I can recommend the following...... PlayHorizon VFR Generation X Version 3 (England and Wales photoscenery) PlayHorizon VFR Scotland South, Western Isles, Orkneys & Shetland Isles UK2000 Xtreme Airports UK2000 VFR Airfields (Volumes 1-3) Earth Simulations TreeScapes (England, Wales, and southern Scotland) Scotflight Western Isles, Orkneys & Shetland Isles (upgraded airports and landmarks; Scotland South upgrade is imminent) Earth Simulations Alderney, Guernsey, Isles of Scilly, and Shawbury Fields (Isle of Man is imminent) FSX Power Project freeware (electricity pylons, wind turbines, power stations etc). This isn't cheap, but I can recommend every single one of these. In particular, make sure that you purchase the PlayHorizon VFR GenX3 photoscenery (rather than the Just Flight VFR Real scenery). It has a lot more contrast, a higher resolution terrain mesh, and the water masks alone are worth the asking price; these enable you to see sandbars and other features under shallow water). I now have complete coverage of England and Wales with photoscenery, trees, and airfields. Scotland is under construction, but you can guarantee that I will purchase the lot when it becomes available! Christopher, thanks for the useful list of the UK building blocks. Yet, how much of the HDD space do they actually take? Thanks, Dirk.
August 3, 201213 yr Dirk, Sorry for the delay. I have been so busy with other stuff that I have forgotten to check. I will endeavour to do this later on when I get home from work. August 3, 201213 yr on a more positive note, the JF release didn' break the terrain map in the GPS; unlike the Horizon version. Swings & roundabouts I guess. That's a point worth expanding on. The Horizon version removes the background from the map in FSX. Horizon haven't fixed it and show no signs of doing so. It's clearly an avoidable bug because I'm told the Just Flight version doesn't have this fault. Gerry Howard
August 3, 201213 yr Bolt/Dirk. The following addons occupy roughly 200GB of hard disk space..... December 23, 201213 yr I did a bit of reading and then went with the 3 uk horizon vfrs, then added ireland east and scotland south to give a few more places to fly. Plus treescapes for the three uk blocks and a smattering of uk2000 larger airports around the country to fly to ngx into.
