June 6, 201213 yr Definitely will have more impulse to want to play around with Google Earth's "flight sim" mode once this is available :) I regards to how this relates to FSX well... should be pretty obvious as a possible source for 3D buildings. Don't know if that will actually happen but hey, Google owns SketchUp so who knows, maybe you'll be able to export an area as a batch of SketchUp models and then convert them for use in FSX. That'd be pretty b!tchinawesome if you ask me... Seriously they can say b!tch on television but I can't say it here?? Drew Sikora Staff Blog Founder/Designer, MSE Airports
June 6, 201213 yr Goggle sold off Sketchup. And I was checking out a new bridge in Kalifornia and went around San Francisco and admired the city in 3D.
June 6, 201213 yr Google doesn't allow tileproxy and they have said they do not want to get into the flight sim market. Yahoo is the only one that has said publicly they don't mind Yahoo Maps to be used in Flight Sim 2004 and FSX with tileproxy. Google is the best leap forward but it is up to them how they want their technology used Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
June 6, 201213 yr Author Google doesn't allow tileproxy... From what I understand (granted, with extremely limited knowledge) this is due to the fact that Google licenses a lot of the satellite imagery and aerial photos from other companies, who in turn have their own licensing terms. In this case, Google is building these models with aerial photographs taken by their own fleet of aircraft. ... and they have said they do not want to get into the flight sim market. Have a reference? Sounds more like an unwillingness to develop consumer products, not deal with developer licensing. Goggle sold off Sketchup. yea a friend pointed that out to me as well. Just earlier this year it seems. Well would have been a pretty smooth pipeline with it - Google Earth export to SketchUp convert to FSX but obviously that's not the only format they could put these models in nor is it the only format that'll go into FSX. June 6, 201213 yr Hmm wonder if you could use this as a display system, like on those high end simulators you know FSX or XPX for flight model and control inputs with this to generate visuals.
June 7, 201213 yr Have a reference? Sounds more like an unwillingness to develop consumer products, not deal with developer licensing. Not anymore...read it years ago in the Tileproxy forums. From what I understand it does come down to the licensing. Bing Maps is the same. Even though Bing Maps is a Microsoft Brand they were not able to licence its use for MS Flight or another flight simulator. Its detail would be great in a flight sim but unfortunately the licensing will not allow it. Here is the notice from the Tileproxy Page re Google Earth: Note that compatibility with Google Inc.'s map servers had to be removed at the explicit request of Mike Hearn who is with Google Earth and Maps engineering department. This is unfortunate, but complying to this request was probably the wisest choice to make. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
June 7, 201213 yr Author It's been pointed out over on FSDeveloper that this actually looks more like simply a highly-detailed mesh with the aerial imagery applied rather than discrete 3D objects. Looking at it again I admit that's possible. Drew Sikora Staff Blog Founder/Designer, MSE Airports
June 7, 201213 yr [M]aybe you'll be able to export an area as a batch of SketchUp models and then convert them for use in FSX. You can already run any model available for google earth/sketchup into a .bgl and place it within flightsim. More info at FSDeveloper. Anthony Cacciatore
June 7, 201213 yr Commercial Member Hey guys, This tech is actually not new at all. It's been used for quite a while already, and you can already use it from this other provider: http://maps.nokia.com It looks impressive zoomed out in the video but you will quickly see the shortcomings when you zoom in. Since texture load size is so massive, you can't really travel quickly yet on the maps, but maybe future tech will allow this.
November 17, 201312 yr Many cities are now 3d in Google Earth. So, is there a way we could transform this Google Earth detailed 3d mesh and images into bgl? Unfortunately FS Eath Tiles only imports images... Teo Pereira
November 17, 201312 yr Seriously they can say b!tch on television but I can't say it here?? qouted from a fellow staff member of yours who got insulted and Pm'ed me: "This is not one of those Internet gaming forums where you can post about anything you want. We have several young members here at AVSIM who are vulnerable to insinuations of swearing. Please read the AVSIM Terms of Service again especially under the Freedom of Speech section. Please try to keep AVSIM as an educational and entertainment resource for people interested in flight simulation." Guess it's the same reason you can't use "b!tch" as I couldn't use the word "sh.t" So maybe you should go and read the TOS under Freedom of speech section as I was told..... ^_^
