Who does go arounds?

Featured Replies

Low and fast touchdown at 200kts with 96fpm is anything but good! but hey, whats the saying? any landing you can walk away from..

Al, max tire speed on the NG is 195knots so you would definitely be leaving a trail or rubber and smoking brakes ;)

He would get his &@($* fired, for sure!

Question: max tire speed is 195 kts. I believe that, but what is the approach speed during a flapless landing?

I've performed 2 go-arounds in the last week alone. Once at DTW due to an aircraft not clearing the runway fast enough, and I performed another at GVA due to not being comfortably stable on the approach at my decision height.

The majority of the time however it's usually down to the proceeding aircraft not clearing the runway in time. It may only be a sim but I like to try and simulate everything as realistically as possible. In fact I remember performing a missed approach a month ago after the number 1 engine failed on final approach. No way was I continuing that approach, so I got back up to my safe altitude and got everything set up.

I always ensure I "brief" myself at least quickly on what I should expect should I have to go around at any stage.

Thanks

Figured I would share a little story about one of my experiences since we are on the topic.

I had a deja vu moment a few months ago at Toronto. If you've never seen this video, take a second to watch it:

I had the exact, and I mean exact thing happen to me, only at Toronto not JFK. Even down to the terminology. Of course the missed approach was different, but it was an awesome feeling pressing the TOGA button and remembering that video.

Thanks!

Highly unlikely !

Do you have any idea what it costs to train up an airline pilot? either do I but I know its a lot :-)

Hi

There is nothing worse than rolling off the end of the runway especially as i do all my flights online so go arounds are a must. They are always pre programmed into the flight plan so its just a matter of reading the chart whilst in the cruise to make sure you know what to do.

Nothing compared to the cost of a 737 with 150 POB.

ATPL training costs about 85k EUR in Europe, payed by the pilot if they don't have a special agreement.

The airline pays for the type-rating.

Done a go arounud on the NGX 3 times now on Vatsim, all ATC (Traffic) related. 2 of those times were sequentially during a busy event. (one go around due to traffic, second go around also due to traffic, third approach to different runway was also nearly a go around at which point I would have had to divert to a different airport.) during one of VatPac/Australia's "Panic Stations" events.

The most recent time was on approach to EGLL during a big Vatsim event. They had me slowing down the whole approach, and as we know the NGX doesn't much like slowing down when on the glideslope already. The Ejet in front of me just crept closer and closer and passing about 800ft the ATC instructed the go around.

Interestingly the German end of the flight had given me a large short-cut across their FIR, but on arriving I had a holding pattern and the Go around.

The go around was largley the Published till I switched to Approach freq, and they gave me a downwind vector.
