The End of Flight?

Featured Replies

admit that the handling of Flight has been a little protective rather than objective.

Of course it has, and to find out why, go read the old archived forum. If you don't think there was anything wrong with that, then you're part of the problem, not part of the solution.

<br />pretty please, admit that the handling of Flight has been a little protective rather than objective.

If you define "protective" as preventing innocents being caught up in the gunfire at the OK Corale, then we are guilty as charged. AVSIM, as an institution, was not impressed with FLIGHT from the day we saw it in Seattle back last year. But... and this is the big but that some of you seem to have lost sight of... We will defend and protect the right of others to enjoy it no matter what others, or we, may think. And we will continue to enforce that philosophy as long as there are those wanting to participate in and continue to use their copy of FLIGHT.

We have not received official confirmation yet from MS regarding this news story and yet there is already a predominant strain of "I told you so" posts in this thread. But, if anyone takes that any further, as in harrassing or provoking FLIGHT enthusiasts, we'll start reacting accordingly. And we'll apply the same to those FLIGHT enthusiasts who reciprocate.

Amen to that!

And not everything in a post is meant as an attack on anyone.

It may just be an opinion, which I hope, is why we participate in a forum.

So long and thanks for all the fish, so sad that it should come to this.

yes, very depressing news, I really wanted another player to do well. If we're not careful, we really will be stuck with flying on consoles. Thank god for Laminar, the ball really is sitting, deflated, in their court, with the opponent limping after doing a hammy.

I think DCS just put on another 10 devs - if they are smart, they should! Next scenery is Nevada, imagine if THEY did alaska!

Assuming the news is correct, very unfortunate for the members of the Flight team and of course fans of the product itself. Flight has greatly impressed me and although it was never going to be as fully featured as I would have liked, what it did do, it did exceptionally well. I always prefer something that is polished yet suffers from sins of omission, versus a product bursting at the seams with functionality and complexity, only to let itself down with frustrating issues and performance problems. For me Flight was the former and everything I had ever hoped for in terms of conveying the feel of VFR flight on a PC.

Looks like Kotaku Updated the article with the official line from Microsoft:

Microsoft Studios is always evaluating its portfolio of products to determine what is best for gamers, families and the company, and this decision was the result of the natural ebb and flow of our portfolio management. Many factors were considered in the difficult decision to stop development on "Microsoft Flight" and "Project Columbia," but we feel it will help us better align with our long-term goals and development plans. For "Microsoft Flight," we will continue to support the community that has embraced the title and the game will still be available to download for free at http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/.

Well ... that's the end of the franchise.

Hook

We have been talking about that quite a few times. Get over it Hookins. Water under the bridge and all that...

Not shut down by too many complaints? I beg to differ. Why do you think they didn't make money?

After the beta I knew that it wouldn't last long. They kept saying that "We're trying to bring 'new' gamers to the flying genre', and we kept telling them that it was a bad idea that only the flight sim public at large has kept FSX going for what? 6? 7 years now? They didn't listen and now they are no more. This is how it works people. If you don't listen to what the public is asking for they aren't going to just take what you give them. Money and and...well you know the rest. I'm sorry that Flight never got any helicopters out but then they probably wouldn't have had cockpits either.

@Microsoft: We spoke with our mouths and our money by not buying what we didn't want. Hopefully now you will listen to those that matter in the flight sim genre, the flight sim enthusists. Gamers are just that gamers and FS'ers will always stand seperate from the gaming crowds. If you want to sell a flying game then you'd better put guns on those Pipers and if you want to sell a flight sim then you'd better make it,"As real as it gets."

Take a VERY DEEP breath. Change the tone, quickly.

Tom,

Have you heard from the aces team yet to confirm the statement?

Cameron Lett :)

They also knew this yesterday. And still they took my money for an overprised cockpit and ran away.

Business is a matter of trust. For me this was the last time i bought something from Microsoft Game Studios. No problem if they close the whole studio.

It seems that the entire Vancouver gaming industry is on the downfall. Many studios have shut down. This might have also contributed to the projects being cancelled You can read about it here:

http://www.theprovin...1334/story.html

"To be fair, the video-game industry is in a global slump, a result of the worldwide economic uncertainty.

And Vancouver's older, established gaming studios appear to be victims of the sudden rise of inexpensive, downloadable games such as Angry Birds for mobile phones and other wireless devices."

It also points out little government support in the ongoing industry transition and that game developers are moving to Toronto due to higher tax credits for video-game studios.

OmarNg7X, as far as I'm concerned you’re right on the money. The industry context is what’s driving all this. I didn’t like Flight’s strategy either, but my impression has been it was born out of desperation rather than confidence. This industry has been hemorrhaging since 2008. The games started around that time are now finished and there aren’t new ones in the pike.

I'm being serious here. We need to start a huge campaign to get MS to resume the FS franchise. We need to show them that they will gain huge popularity and profits.

I've made a FB page to start our campaign. https://www.facebook.com/bringbackfs
