The human mind

It's amazing how you can 'fool' yourself... When I was all into Flight I thought, and so I posted, that FSX didn't look too good. Flight was so much better. But now I know that Flight is dead, I suddenly see things in Flight that aren't that good... and I see things in FSX that are great...

Guess this is how it works... It's as if I am looking at myself, thinking 'what a nut you are'. But I don't think I am the only one: I think that 90% of the people choose 'a side' and then go for it. That's how it works. You WANT something to succeed or to happen or to fail... Could you call that 'fooling yourself'? Or is this simply how it works...?

A lot of the discussions we had over FSX and Flight (and other sims) in the last few months quite often weren't honest and open discussions: it was almost a 'war' between various sides and opinions in which people know beforehand they wouldn't switch places. People tend to defend what they have or what they want.

I wanted Flight to succeed. And so I looked mostly at the good things, although (as you probably know) I also noted bad things. But FSX was a thing of the past for me. I even uninstalled it. No more FSX for me. Don't make me laugh. I even considered deleting all my addons. (Really!) And two days after the demise of Flight I am flying my brand new RealAir Lancair in FSX and I actually and honestly enjoy it, even though I am still sad over Flight's demise. I see a lot of things that are a lot better then they were in Flight. I have CHOSEN to go for FSX again. Simple as that.

Am I talking in riddles for some of you or do you recognize what I'm saying...? Am I a hypocrite or just realistic? Am I fooling myself or is this simply how it works?

For me it is a different strange situation. I fly all flight sims, embrace what is good in them, and then wish there was one sim that had it all. The end result for me right now is that I am not simming much...

3rd party aircraft in Xplane spoiled me with their great feel of flight but the scenery doesn't do it for me yet. FSX scenery especially with add ins is great but the planes don't feel as real.

So I find myself trying each sim for a while, get dissatisfied, and wish there was a new sim out to take it to the next level. It appears now Xplane will be the only one now, and I patiently await for improvements that will get me interested again.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

They both have their good and bad things. Basically what's been done badly in FSX has been done well in FLIGHT, and what's been done bad in FLIGHT has been done well in FSX. What we need is something like a combo between the two. The engine, graphics, user interface and flightdynics of FLIGHT, together with the scenery, airports, AI traffic/cars/boats, and mod-ability of FSX. Then it would be a dream.

I am sure that in any future good new simulator, we can run PMDG airplanes at 60 FPS stable, wouldn't that be a dream? And people can say that this is not possible because they are used to FSX, but yes it will. There are many other games like extremely complicated racing simulators that are just as demanding as FSX and can still run at above 120 FPS.

You are not talking riddles, nor a hypocrite and ceirtanly you ar not fooling yourself.

There is a part of the human mind set to protect yourself.

That is how it works.

I too am back to FSX and now I am just browsing for some GA aircraft.

You are spot on, and no you aren't a hypocrite. For example, I used to go to websites like Yelp to get reviews of restaurants or whatever. But I stopped because there are always reviews that trash a place, then others that say it's the best ever. So which is it? I think it comes down to how you perceive and "bend" the truth to your liking.

and now am just browsing for some GA aircraft

Did I already say I bought the RealAir Legacy?

And thanks for the reassuring confirmation that this is indeed how it works...

I agree with Geof. I have never hated any flight game. In fact, 6 years ago, I was defending FS X against the attacks from the FS 9ers; recently many of the same people have attacked Flight and refuse to lease FS X!

They have all been good for me, and I have loved them all. Although I have a soft spot in my heart for FS 4 with its Airplane Factory - I made a lot of very strange aircraft then.

What I can't understand and where I don't agree is with the hate and anger. This is supposed to be an enjoyable and fun hobby, not a source of conflict.

Best regards.

Hi,

From my perspective, Flight and FSX are different hobbies. In FSX I spent most of my time modifying things, such as getting rid of pop up 2D windows that could be replaced with Cameras. Aside from the problems with poorly modeled vertical terrain, hillside rivers, and areas which were in no way representative of the real world I was content with how things appeared. When Flight came along most tweaking options disappeared and I found myself enjoying the experience of actually flying and trying to do it (within bounds) as realistically as possible. With the development of Flight discontinued, not much has changed. I just hope that the, as yet, unreleased DLC which has been alluded to involves a helicopter.

Yes, interesting human mind. I loaded FSX yesterday with flight plan which I used in one of clandestine mission in Flight. And I was surprised how I have more real feeling of hight of mountains, distances ... I really enjoyed it. Then I went to Europe. Fly a bit around and decide to buy scenery for my country (for 60 €). I was planning to do this before Flight came out, but then bought Hawaii, Alaska, Maule, and even CC ...

Nothing you said appears hypocritical to me, Jeroen. You simply made a commitment and worked hard to convince yourself of the correctness of your decision. Nothing abnormal or hypocritical about that. Neither can that approach be considered to be 'fooling yourself'. I suspect recent events have simply caused you to re-open your mind and gaze about a little bit.

At some point, in the very near future, I'm going to have to stop reading posts on here and actually start tearing the house apart to find my FSX disks... and hope like heck they run fairly well on this laptop, which they should, since I have never used most of the add-ons that people recommend. Of course, now that I've read so much about them, I know I'll have to try some... I just wish I knew which will give me the most impact for the buck and softest performance hit.

This is one of the things that made Flight so much appeal...

Jeroen, I feel just like you... Unfortunately, I can't be that open-minded as Geofa and Luis, and feel fine with using many sims at the same time :-(

I reinstalled Condor - I had stupidly quited using it because when I upgraded to Windows 7 because of FLIGHT, I couldn't make it work... Last night I found the solution and solved it ASAP!!!!

I also though many many hours about choosing to buy back FSX, invest in LM Prepar3d, DCS World or Xplane. I made my decision for Xplane10 and ordered it. I am sure I will look at it in a different way, and I will learn to appreciate what it has of good, and try to get the devs fix what I find is buggy...

And of course, I still have the only sim I never quited using - ELITE v8 :-) Today I few from Barcelona to Lisbon using RW in ELITE's B200. Whow!

People often "bounce" after a "relationship" ends. Its as old as the hills.

I suspect unfortunately that I will not be as resilient in returning to things as before. My support for flight was due to personal preference, but was also due to some feelings I had about a sort of growing disconnect from the wider world within an increasingly isolated core of the community (and the implications of that for the hobby) I just automatically tend to look ahead, and I am going to presume others are as well..

For me, Flight, not necessarily in its current iteration, but at the end of the sort of quick growth cycle possible only by a title supported by major money, offered several potential solutions. That option is now effectively removed, and I feel the wagons circling once more. Meanwhile, my underlying unease about the future of civilian simulation and its ability to grow remains just as strong. and is perhaps even stronger than before.

Jeroen, totally agree with that human element you talk about. I swap Sims quite a bit and notice different advantages/disadvantages each time.

i too fired up FSX yesterday, and was very impressed with many elements, and my God, REX HD is amazing! Flight was so smooth, but even 18fps feels playable with very accurate Orbx scenery. Ive got another topic almost ready, an interesting suggestion.....
