How do you keep track of all the payware airports you have ?

Featured Replies

Damn I am so 20th century... I just have a handwritten list on the wall! Easy to pick a destination at random. Guess I need to modernise!

Well you guys are more sophisticated than me, I have a text file that I keep all my payware airports listed and keep track every airport payware or freeware. Yesterday it backfired on me I bought the new FlightBeam KPHX which his nothing but STUNNING and forgot that I had a freeware KPHX installed. Got a strange gate line but then cleaned it up with when I guess that the double taxi lines were screwed up.

Another thing is to just check the scenery folder for content. BTW I only fly the LDS 767 so I don't have to worry about what planes are in my hanger.

I am glad I don't buy airports anymore: apparently this saves me a lot of trouble! However, when I still was into Orbx airports I made a simple map using Google with all the airports I owned on it. I had it printed out beside my computer so I could easily plan flights between the airports.

But as I said, payware airports don't interest me anymore. Way too expensive, way too heavy on the system and it spoils the rest of the scenery because the rest never looks as good as that payware airport... Only flying between addon airports became very boring and I only visited 5% of the Orbx regions I own.

BTW If you own that many airports which you haven't even visited yet... shouldn't you stop buying them, at least for a while...?

Great point. I bought all the AU- Orbx airports because i plan on flying all around the world. Making a connection flight payware after payware. For example i would fly from KPHL freeware airport but very nicely done by Sunskyjet to FlightBeam KSFO then to one of the AU- Orbx Airports. Going around the world visiting payware airport also taking real flight plan that real airliner would fly into the area. The reason for all this is if one day i take a vacation to those actual places i would like to see how close to real those payware came out to the actual real thing. It may sound kind of crazy lol an it sure cost me lots of money . After buying almost every Orbx Airports i have had to tweak correctly an do several test flight to see if i notice any stutter when coming in for landing. An right now FSX runs pretty well i may say. So am ready to do this long flight journey in FSX.

I just had a directory with a backup of all my purchased airports. Not very easy to look up what I have so I didn't do it too often. Some great ideas here though. Thanks everyone!

it spoils the rest of the scenery because the rest never looks as good as that payware airport.

What I find fantastic about the ORBX sceneries (I have the three NW US ones) is that although the sceneries cover vast areas, the ORBX team have enhanced so many of the airports there that they almost qualify as payware sceneries! So when I go exploring my ORBX world, I usually start from one of the 7-8 ORBX airports I've bought, but I know that I can fly to almost any airport within those three ORBX sceneries and still have a very rewarding visual experience whichever airport I land at as well as enroute. In FS9 I never went exploring new airports unless I had a payware scenery for it, since the default ones are so ugly.

I've owned FSX since the day it was released, but I haven't touched it until I bought my first ORBX scenery last spring. Now I load AS2012, my Lancair and get lost in my ORBX heaven! Sorry if this sounds like an ad for ORBX but it's the reason I haven't had FS9 on my computer for a long time (until yesterday - need to get back into my VATSIM skies again).

Now back on topic! :D

Hi Mr Leny,

I do mark them in google earth, I started with the excellent KMZs provided by OzX and ORBX, these cover all of Australia/NZ. These have aerodrome information, runway lengths etc in them as well.

Colour coded ORBX airports, OzX are another colour, Ant's airports another colour, and overseas airports another colour still. I have another colour for favourite AFCAD major international airports as well (e.g. Ray Smith's AFCADs).

I haven't finished adding all my overseas scenery yet, so I'm still working partly from my text file but one day I'll do it.. I hope before I get more scenery :)

The other thing I do - is I keep charts in a chart folder hierarchy for every airport I own as well. I've decided not to update AIRAC data any more and stick close to July 2012, then I don't need to update my charts ever again. Some countries it takes alot of digging to find charts, and it gets time consuming.

Keeping charts is another way to never forget where you should fly:

Yes I did have trouble, I too was looking for a download link in my email payment acknowledgement. What one has to do is go to the FlightBeam trial download button. Download the airport and copy the serial number from your receipt, then start FSX go to the addon menu select the Addon Manager and then to the FSDT FlightBeam KPHX and then paste the S/N and activate the scenery. Kinda messy but it works.

Bob

I have a folder on my Desk Top named "FSX Addons". Inside are folders for "Airports" and "Aircraft". Inside each are folders named "Payware" and "Freeware". Inside those are folders named "Installed" and "Not Installed".

I also have a large, 3'X5" plastic coated world map I purchaced at a local map store for 8 bucks. I have each airport marked with airlines/aircraft used. I use dry-erase to ease updating.

I keep all my registration information on a Word Doc.

I have Outlook for my e-mail program and save all the e-mails with the registration codes and place them in my FS Software directory within Outlook. I then open the e-mail and change the subject to read the name of the product and the registration code. That way I can see immediately what airports/scenery/aircraft I have bought in the event I have to reinstall. If you reinstall Windows or Outlook or move to a new computer, just make sure you save the .pst program and move it to the new system.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks Bob, I purchase it an i thought maybe the product went into my junk mail. But now that you give me these steps now i know what to do . Am about to add this airport to the list am creating .It is taking up a lot of time but hopefully i will be done by today. What am doing is using my other laptop as a guide using google earth , an naming each payware that i have with the airport ICAO code.

Thanks Jim , but how do you keep track in fsx of all the payware scenery you have ? Do you use the list of payware scenery an airport you have before creating a flight plan ?

I am REAL old fashion. I have a large map on the wall and I use pushpins to denote add-on airports. It also helps me decide how far i want to fly, going from airport to airport.

Hi would like to know how you guys keep track of all the payware airport you guys have? I myself have a lot of payware airports that i have bought but sometimes i even forget i have them . Because i bought so many sometime it is hard to keep track an i came to notice the other day that i had few payware airports that i haven't even visit yet. What are some of the ways to best keep track of your payware scenery or airport?

Same as ones before me - entered them all manually into Googlemaps and saved a backup, cuz it was a hell of the work. Works a charm - I just open, see where I might fly, and voila... on my way.

Not sure why I would need to do that but it's simple as I have everything I own mostly memorized. I own all of Orbx/PNW, all of FSDT, all MegaScenery, UTX USA, Canada, and Europe, Aerosoft London/London City, GEX, and FEX. There are many I own that I do not fly to anymore as they are not framerate friendly (such as London/London City). I have payware airports that I fly to/from frequently, mostly in the USA. I have lots of freeware airports too. I do not use any list of payware scenery before creating a flight plan or look at a map. I just use an existing flightplan to guide my decision and if a flightplan is not available, I'll make one with FSBuild and go fly. Flights one hour or less are my favorites. I apologize for not understanding the OP.

Jim

I am am not using google map but i guest there pretty much the same as google earth. I have saved everything in case something happen . Another thing i can say about using google earth to keep track of payware scenery it would be that i can now see how great of a job scenery developers did by looking into google earth i can see what they left out or what they did. Am not trying to compare their work with google earth but trying to see how close to real they came. It is great it change my experience in fsx in flight planning .

Its okay Jim i understand now . But you have a great memory in keeping track of all the scenery , me in the other hand would have to write them down or used what am using now google earth to see how far they are from each other.

While ORBX does a great job, I disagree completely. Default building textures, basic static airplane models (that you can't remove, by the way) default ground textures. No they don't almost qualify. They're just default airports with some objects added. It takes away from the beauty of all their scenery textures.
