November 5, 201213 yr The aviation part is done pretty well, a couple parts that made me cringe but it not loser to hero. It is not an action movie. It has been played that way in previews but its not. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to give anything away. However Denzel is great.
November 6, 201213 yr Very offensive crappy movie. Both my wife and I got our money back! Should have listened to some reviews from other people that had seen it. Typical liberal bias as usual in the film. Make christians look like idiots. Make the owner of the airlilnes look like a complete imbecile interested in money only. The only thing missing were jabs at our military. Theatre only had about 6-8 other people watching it when we left. Only good thing about it was the popcorn was good. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but this review seems.... "slanted" politcally. Who knows, maybe I'll see it and agree. Regardless, thanks for your mini review. November 6, 201213 yr Well, I think they figure if you don't stay till the end that it's a pretty good indication that you didn't like the movie. They had no problem giving us our money back. WOW....you are taking this way out of context!!!! If that is what you gathered from this movie, then your comprehension of and overall analysis of this movie is way off course. How are Christians made to look like idiots? And Yes, airlines are in the business of making money, any part of their operation that has the potential to minimize this is avoided at all cost. especially if the accident is caused by pilot error, and or a drunk pilot. The movie is clearly not about WOWing the aviation community, although they tried to implement some of the procedures from the real world which has been done much better than some of the low budget aviation movies out there. It is clearly a movie about one man's struggle with alcoholism and how is actions (although saving the lives of many) as a functional drunk proved damaging to his past, which he eventually comes to grips with his actions and does the right thing. Not quite sure if the actions of the crew would have actually saved the aircraft, although it looks like they took the premise of Alaska 261 for the basis of the movie. the flightdeck does appear authentic for the most part MD80/90, not sure if all the instruments represented are from the actual MD simulator. The FO becomes rather spastic during the loss of control, and of course the CA being rather intoxicated keeps his calm. The departure was somewhat interesting, a bit convoluted, but humorous. If one watches the movie from a non-critique perspective, one might actually enjoy it. November 6, 201213 yr For what it's worth, speaking as a liberal East Coast Jewish-born Zen practitioner.. I didn't much like the treatment of the (Born Again?) Christian first officer. The problem for me was that they failed to represent him as a skilled technical professional - I think an F/O would have had a better apprehension of what the captain was trying to do. Hollywood doesn't seem to be able to fit skill and faith into the same bucket. Related question - would they have filmed a script in which the alcoholic captain panics and the religious F/O saves the aircraft? To me that was one of the few false notes in what was otherwise a very strong script. I didn't have a problem with the CEO. The airline is clearly supposed to be a low-cost regional, and there's a throwaway line about how the captain and the union rep both used to be with Delta - which I took as a nod toward some of the stress that goes with an airline job and that could make life hellish for an alcoholic. That, to me, is a small example of how well handled the aviation elements are - it's not just background, the story is really grounded in the realities of the workplace. That said, it's not an aviation movie. It's a character movie about an alcoholic avoiding, then coming to terms with himself. The trailers were a bit misleading. They suggested that the story was about a pilot who makes a one-time mistake that undermines his heroism. In fact it's about someone way out on the edge who happens to do something heroic. It's complicated and dark. Recommended, but don't expect a classic aviation movie, or a twist on Sullenberger, or anything like that. Alan Ampolsk"Ah, Paula, they are firing at me!"-- Saint-Exupery

November 6, 201213 yr I am ignoring this thread because I don't want to end up reading any spoilers... Unfortunately this movie won't be released in New Zealand until 7 February 2013, which I think is a load of garbage, so no wonder things like downloading still happen. I am not a pirate so I have a long time to wait. Cheers Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
November 6, 201213 yr Definitely. I'm both an alcoholic and a pilot. I need to know what to do in that situation.

I hope you didn't miss the point of the movie. It's a remarkably powerful human story and that's what you deduced from it - political and maybe anti-christian overtones? And you got your money back? Interesting. But, to each their own I suppose. No need to debate about this on a flight sim community forum. My opinion was that it was a great film and a great story, one that is very personal to me. Cheers. November 8, 201213 yr political and maybe anti-christian overtones? Yea, I didn't get that from the movie either. My take was that the couple may lean to the tin foil hat aspect of their beliefs, but certainly not a major plot aspect. What transpired with all the other areas was not unbelievable at all, and could have been taken right out of any real life story with regulatory oversight.
