Windows 8 and FSX - Worth the download!

The Ribbon was a great way for Microsoft to help people utilize all the features in the Office products that no one bothered to use before because they were hidden in menus. That is not a good example at all.

Maybe for you it isn't, but it was enough for me to buy Classic Menu so I could find everything it took me years to learn to use without the need to find things on the Ribbon from Hell! It's why Classic Menu had a market my friend because people found the ribbon NOT user friendly. I use many advance features in Office and program some in VBA so yes, I found the ribbon non-intuitive and no, I don't care to spend time trying to find things I used constantly and now are buried and very poorly organized (for previously experienced users).

i'm on Excel every hour of work ... i know initially ribbon add-ins were useful when Office 2007 came out but after a while everyone just got used to it. Like in Excel 2010 look at the Data tab and how much better the items are presented. Or how much better the Formula Auditing is presented in the ribbon compared to before.

i think Microsoft has the right idea, it can't continually keep old interfaces to pander to people used to the old way. that goes for Windows, Office, everything else. it needs to become more friendly to new users or they will bleed a slow death. think of all the other great computer names that refused to change and have drifted off to the wayside.

Enjoy your own opinion. I will say it again: because PLENTY of people didn't want to spend time learning their new way of organizing the GUI, a market was created for Classic Menu, a way to make the Ribbon from Hell return to something people could relate to. Yes, I have a decade of experience in using the other menus, as do many older users. I've used 2010 for a year now, and NO, I don't find many things as quick and easy to do despite using it daily myself. Sure, there are a few improvements. I found Office 2011 for Mac better organized over Office 2010 for Windows despite its ribbon. I don't think MS is very good at arranging things to be the most user friendly. The reason MOST users don't use features IMO is not because of how the GUI presents choice, but because they simply don't need to do more than a few simple things.

MS's 'right idea' is mostly a means of getting people to buy new software, regardless of whether or not there is a need in terms of features. Indeed, MS has a history of removing useful features! By the time XP & Office 2003 matured, 99% of all features needed by offices & users in terms of an OS & Office suite WERE DONE, and done very well. The rest are mostly ways of selling new software. I would have liked to see MS offer extended licensing at a fee to continue supporting older products. When you compare the time it takes to FIND things in new versions of Office, over the real value of new features to experienced users, the value starts diminishing...IMO.

Jim,

what about the option of having a friend download the x64 and then you do a clean install? I cannot for the life of me see why this is being made so awkward! At the end of the day, you just need to download or load up a damn pirate copy of Win 7 even if it doesn't work properly - just to convince Win 8 of the 64 bit architecture - I did a fresh install on my machine, admittedly it was win 7 x 64 in the first place but I used the upgrade and burned a fresh DVD and did a complete wipe - partitions the lot were cleared out. I agree about Paul Thurrotts site, there is so much "rumour" and junk going around, it is good to have a decent source. Another I have found over the years to be reliable -

Pretty much my experience. Got the $15/$40 iso (install by creating media/choose media/iso) burned to DVD, booted the target machine from DVD, put in key which accepted Win 8 RP (which was on the system), did a clean install, selected advanced (custom install windows only/advanced drive options) and blew away the existing partition, and then installed. Got the free media center pack and installed. Installed the NVidia 310 betas. Now good to go.

Can I ask you what problems you are having? Mine is as sweet as a nut! Let me know as I have been through to hell and back with FSX and WIN7 and Win 8 has been so much easier. If I can help, I will, as once you get Win 8 running - you won't go back!

As stated, graphical injectors such as sweetfx, fxaa or enbseries do not work in windows 8. If you get it working please let me know what you did.

I tried all three and they do work.

But I haven't made anything different as it was in WIN7, so I can't help you with a special solution.

Everything works here as with WIN7.

@Jerad

Is this a serious question?

Yes, I'm sure!

All I can say is, that I do not have any "stupid file permission errors" - not with FSX, not with any other programs

F@!$@%!% you microsoft/hp. Now my printer (HP LJ 1005) isn't working and HP says they are not writing support for windows 8.

Well damn you HP, I'm not buying another one of your printers.

As for 8, I'm reinstalling 7 when I have time. This OS is a pile of horse crap.

It's almost as if they want you to buy a new printer. I think HP is making a big mistake by not supporting future OS's but I know I'm wrong because they are getting away with it and still selling printers like crazy. Like you I said I wouldn't buy another HP. Windows 8 should have some legacy drivers that came with Windows 8. It won't provide all the features that came with your printer via the HP drivers but 98% of the features are still there. I have the PhotoSmart 7960 printer and believe it was made for XP. When Vista and Windows 7 came out, they said no support is provided and I should use the drivers that come with Windows. So far they work pretty good but my Event Viewer is always coming up with critical errors regarding the printer and suggests I upgrade them. Yeah! I would love too!

Best regards,

Jim

Not much different from any past operating system releases, really. When Vista came out my Epson Perfection 1240U scanner had no Vista driver, so I could no longer use it in Vista. I still believe there's no official Vista/Win7/Win8 driver for it. Luckily I still dual boot Windows XP. At least with your HP 1005 it sounds like HP is working on a Win8 driver to release in January.

Hasn't the RTM been released for several months already? I'm not waiting that long, I need my printer.

Too many issues with Win 8, I've tried it out now for 3 days and I'm really frustrated doing even the simplest task -- e.g. I can't even click through my photos through the Photo/image viewer application they've included -- I have to physically move the files to the My Pictures folder.

Do you know how I struggled to convert the weather app to display in degrees Celsius? How am I suppose to know you can 'right click' and a new option tab will show up.
