November 13, 201213 yr Seeing as the majority of the users on here use Windows XP to Win7 for MSFS and various other games, the closed platform of Windows 8 won't appeal to many of us. I have been a very loyal MS Customer since 1991, everything from MSDOS to Windows 3.1, 3.11, Win95, Win98, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP, WinVista, Win7.......Also FS3, FS4, FS5, FS5.1, FS95, FS98, FS2000, FS2002, FS2004, FSX,.......Not to mention Space Simulator, Train Simulator, Microsoft Office Suites etc etc etc..... This is the first time ever as an MS Customer that they are not offering anything that I am interested in. Thanks for 21 years Microsoft, I think I am going to buy me a Samsung Galaxy...... - (But I will be using Windows 7 and FSX for many years to come) Cheers  Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
November 13, 201213 yr Sure, we can all stick with Win7......... At least until they stop supporting/updating it. (And some will stick with it even then) We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. November 13, 201213 yr I think I've read that DX11.1 will be a Win8 only feature. Well, according to their current plans. Now don't ask me what exactly that means for now. On Win8. I like it. I had a tablet with Win7 before and Win8 made the thing way better. For my desktop? Nah. At least not until I see some benefits. But I also don't see downsides. So the ones who have it won't get harmed. By this, I'm always a bit surprised when the strong emotions come up the one way or the other. Now lets discuss the best weather addons, 737s or texture sets.
November 13, 201213 yr .....Windows 8 sucks. I can remember people whining when Microsoft first launched Windows and saying they were going to stay with DOS. Gerry Howard
November 13, 201213 yr Wow is it really that bad? Some on here are saying it's great. I haven't tried it yet personally. I beta tested it and just found it took a lot more navigating around with the start menu gone. I mainly don't like it is no longer an open environment as it was in the past. I also thought the Cloud features were limited and annoying. I can remember people whining when Microsoft first launched Windows and saying they were going to stay with DOS. Doesn't compare, Windows 8 is comparing Windows to Windows and nothing to do with transitioning from MSDOS or PCDOS into a GUI. Windows 8 is Microsoft locking down the gates of the open environment that so many of us have enjoyed for decades in both Windows and MSDOS (the reason why we choose MS over Apple in the first place)...anyhow, those days are now gone as Microsoft is heading into a 'Walled Garden' as well, and that is what many of us are against. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
November 13, 201213 yr What makes you think that it's so limited, Matthew? That desktop mode, so far, allowed all of my old software to run. Now I don't know what it takes to write stuff for the 'new interface', which is nice on a touch device, but the legacy soft will continue to work in Win8 and needs minor or no changes to do so. It's very close to Win7 in technical terms as it seems. I've installed freeware video players, ad-blockers, some network tools. All of them not made especially for Win8 but for that 'Windows PC' regime. I can even install my normal MSOffice (back to 2003) there, no need for extra versions or converters due to a switch to another platform. I also thought the Cloud features were limited and annoying. That's what I think about every cloud feature, regardless of the OS. So far, I did not have to use them and one can disable the features to some extent. I've also clicked the shop, looked like this  , and left. If one appreciates such features, I may see a point when compared to the mighty Apple Store for example. My gf would miss her money pit for sure.
November 13, 201213 yr What makes you think that it's so limited, Matthew? As they move forward with DirectX 11.1 and new technologies they are closing down the open environment we have become accustomed to for over 3 decades now. Yes Windows 8 will still run legacy software, but it is where they are trying to take the new Windows 8 and DirectX 11.1 software that I don't like....I just prefer the open environment of the past, hence the reason why Windows was the choice over Apple for many of us in the past. Right now it is crossing a line and I don't like were it is heading. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
November 13, 201213 yr Windows 8 sucks. I find it quite comical that you incessantly bash this OS. I wish I knew why it "sucked" so bad because most people I talk to say that like it quite nice.
November 13, 201213 yr Matthew, I won't question your opinion. But the 'closing down' happened before and may do so in the future. WinXP did never have DX10 support for example, it was a Vista (and later) feature and stayed that way. And I doubt that the other OS devs do it differently. In fact, you have to beg some devs to support the next Andriod version on your 'old' hardware or you are just locked out. Ask some tablet users or the ones wanting to see the latest OS on their phones. No official update path available. It doesn't even mean that their hardware is very old. It's just not the current model, so you get stuck with the version of the OS you have. While, at the same time, we may assume that some old Win7 tablet (which may now be a Win8 tablet) will work fine with Win9 too. By this, I don't see MS closing any doors. At least none of which we already know about. Go back some Windows versions and you will miss Bluetooth, USB 2.0, HDMI and fancy DRM thingies support and more. The company, same as the other companies, lives from selling new things to old customers. It's the system. That global OS of ours. Strange setup. Well, I see it as Ben. Seems like there's a preference for an OS or platform or there is none. No problem at all. In my eyes, there's no harm with Win8. Same as there's no real benefit, unless you run a touchscreen. As said, my gf is very happy with her (in my eyes) extremely limited iOS and the company's policy. It's her money, not mine. And logics do not play the first role on a market. Tell you what. I will install a DOS box and play my old Maniac Mansion on the fancy new Win8 OS, on that tablet. That works and won't cost me a single cent. Isn't that nice and open enough?
November 13, 201213 yr Doesn't compare, Windows 8 is comparing Windows to Windows and nothing to do with transitioning from MSDOS or PCDOS into a GUI. Windows 8 is Microsoft locking down the gates of the open environment... How is then that people are running FS under Win8 if it's "locked down"? Gerry Howard
November 13, 201213 yr How is then that people are running FS under Win8 if it's "locked down"? Exactly... People think that Windows RT runs on all devices... It *doesn't*. Windows RT and Windows 8 are two completely *seperate* operating systems. RT is the version that is more restricted but it is only designed for ARM processors within Tablets. People need to do their research before they come on forums and spout off about how "restricted" and "locked-down" it is....
November 13, 201213 yr People need to do their research before they come on forums and spout off about how "restricted" and "locked-down" it is.... But that would spoil the fun :( Gerry Howard
