December 13, 201213 yr Dave, you have to read his post in another way. Like this . Disregard. I've answered to the wrong page of the thread. :blush: But I agree, good one from Efrain.

December 14, 201213 yr Howdy All -- interesting reading here. Well, one thing for sure --- a jump to 2.0 is a major UPGRADE, not to be confused with an UPDATE (eg 1.5, etc). That means BIG upsides in the features both visible and under the hood. A great example is what MS did between FS9 and FSX. Many of the changes were not visible to the casual user, but were very significant to the developer and the enthusiast. Regardless, charging for a new version (big upgrade), which 2.0 would have to be, does hinge on the magnitude of the upsides. Trying to charge for a update would be very counter-productive to LM's sim bottom line. Without a doubt, LM knows where the big payback for P3D will come from --- and that is the consumer, with volume sales, and a product that continues the evolution of the FS product line in performance and appearance features. Anyway, time will tell. There is a long term strategy behind P3D. Cheers!!! :Big Grin: Bob Magill

Don't get me wrong, I'd really like that to happen, but there are no facts to back up that dream. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
December 14, 201213 yr Without a doubt, LM knows where the big payback for P3D will come from --- and that is the consumer, with volume sales, I suggest that the reality is that Lockheed-Martin knows that its return will come from its corporate market and that it has no intention of selling into the consumer market. the evidence suggests that its agreement with Microsoft precludes that.. Dont be so fast to discount the consumer market. I agree its a corporate plan to the majority of the marketing, but if they had no interest in the consumer market, there would be zero interest in FSX addons and zero support for them, and zero encouragment for the devs to support P3D and there is no way they would do an interview on avsim a few months ago which is full of hobbyists in the consumer market. All of which are entertainment purposed add ons. On the contrary. Further I doubt you would have seen an Academic version available if they had no interest in the consumer market. Its an added bonus, and in a way, its free marketing by all the buzz and talking about it. I think it can only get better, be it a corporate customer, or a dedicated consumer hobbyist that is intent on learning and further aviation skills. I think it can only get better, be it a corporate customer, or a dedicated consumer hobbyist that is intent on learning and further aviation skills. Exactly my point. If one looks back across just the history of, say, FS9 and FSX and all the copies that MS sold during the years those two products have run their course, it is astounding. You could list the "corporate customers" for what it is now, and it would be short in comparison. While LM could/can/probably will do things with it for special applications, the real revenue generation comes from the mass produced versions. To make money just from corporate application does not make sense for the end game business strategy to pay what LM probably did for the source code of FSX. LM also has a lock on the most popular flight sim in history. To each his own opinion, but I follow the money. Cheers --- Bob Bob Magill
December 14, 201213 yr There's a lot of wishful thinking going on here, When Lockheed Martin licenced ESP from Microsoft it said: The agreement provides Lockheed Martin with access to the ESP technology portfolio enabling the company to build cost-effective simulation solutions for customized training for its worldwide customers. Lockheed Martin’s software development teams will extend the current capabilities of ESP to enable a whole new suite of innovative ESP-based solutions that will evolve beyond flight training to include ground and civil agency applications. “The training needs of our military and civil government customers continue to expand,” said Chester Kennedy, vice president of Engineering at Lockheed Martin’s Simulation, Training & Support business unit. “Seeking out and developing new innovative solutions such as this one based on the proven Microsoft ESP technology allows Lockheed Martin to provide our customers with new and tailored training systems more quickly and cost efficiently.” “Solutions built on Microsoft ESP can engage users in immersive experiences with very realistic environments, making them ideal tools for training, evaluating and preparing personnel for optimal performance in the real world,” said Chris Cortez, general manager of Strategic Programs at Microsoft and a retired Marine Corps major general. “ESP models the entire world and will allow Lockheed Martin’s developers to easily add their own content, objects, scenery, simulation functionality and scenarios to create custom training solutions.” Lockheed Martin is an global aerospace, defense, security, and advanced technology company with worldwide interests. It is one of the world's largest defense contractors; About 755 of Lockheed Martin's revenues come from military sales. It received 7.1% of the funds paid out by the Pentagon. It just is not interested in consumer sales. It's returns will come from sales of simulations to its corporate customers - not selling $50 Academic Licences. Gerry Howard
December 14, 201213 yr Dave, I was being sarcastic. We know how mum PMDG is when it comes to making announcements on release dates, so I was just trying to say that LM would be as mum as PMDG is when making any announcement about P3D 2.0's release date. Efrain, You fooled me. I was desperately trying to access my memory cells trying to recall anything remotely resembling that statement! Good one indeed! Kind regards,

I agree with mgh here. The consumer "training" market is just a side business, a mircro-profit center, probably more of a pain than a benefit for LM. The entire flight sim consumer market is probably no more than a wide beta test to make sure the core code works. LM is going to make all it's money, not selling $200 full licenses, but contracting for custom work for the customers. It's unlikely we'll ever see any of this custom work, so don't get your hopes up. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
