January 22, 201313 yr Go for 4GB of VRAM on your GPU card - the MSi GTX 680 is available with 4GB of VRAM. I have a GTX690 that has 4GB 'total' split between the dual GPU chips - and I bump my head on the texture ceiling - I am running with all 2GB of VRAM in use... but if I had 4GB I could max the textures out at highest setting. Dual graphics card (SLI or GTX690 with oncard SLI) are not supported in XPlane at the present time AFAIK. Thus you'd be wasting your dough on 2 GlPUs. That of course may change over time. Thanks for that information. I'm still...having way too much fun w/ FSX tricked out to make the jump, but this development in XPlane has me rethinking what the 'big upgrade' for me will be based on. I had previously guessed it would be P3D v2 but since that's not out yet and we don't know what will come of it I'm thinking now definitely build for XPlane 10 64-bit. January 22, 201313 yr Author I too was torn with changing over. I got 'hooked' when I looked at the 64-bit demo at KSEA. I inadvertently flew too close to a freeway overpass pylon and was astounded how great it looked. The ground level roads and freeways alone pulled me off FSX and into x-Plane world. Yes, there are several things that are 'missing' in XPXG (X-Plane 10 Global) - but overall, it's not even a close contest! The lack of OOMs and Crash to Desktop in XPXG was the deciding factor. Also, being able to (generally speaking) hang up my 'tweaking settings' booties, that was golden as well. R. I believe you, but as I say, I get great enjoyment already w/ FSX, it's trouble free for me, I love using FSPassengersX to track my airline company, and there is no way I'd part w/ that quite yet. I'm very interested though in XP and as I say this will be the basis for my next system, i.e., I will build it for 64-bit sim: lots of ram, dual 6-core CPUs--as long as it can run FSX a lot better than my current machine. January 23, 201313 yr Commercial Member I agree Noel. Thing is I know FSX and it has taken me years to learn how to use and improve it. IOW I'm used to FSX. Yes XP10 would be a new challenge and maybe even fun but like movie sequels I would forever be comparing it to and trying to make it like FSX. Personally I don't have the time or ambition. January 23, 201313 yr Personally I don't have the time or ambition. Yes that's much of it here too. If it wasn't providing a high level of satisfaction already that would up the ante for XP conversion. It is great news though, XP-10. I have been very vocal about a new forward looking engine for flight simming, and XPlane sounds like it's already taken huge strides toward that end. Hopefully the law suit won't be a big deal for Laminar Research. January 23, 201313 yr Author OK- I would still recommend you guys obtain the x-Plane Global 8-dvd edition, install it and test it on your systems. It might not be 'what you're used to' - but FSX can be a demanding mistress, I think we'd all agree. Once I saw the difference between the two (by running the XP DEMO), I jumped on the purchase. For about the price of one add-on FSX airplane - and even in 32-bits, x-Plane is astounding. $69 isn't too much to spend to see the future of flight simulation, is it? Shoot, I bought Prepar3D and was HUGELY disappointed. Major PITA trying to make it work alongside FSX. And still all of the same problems as they are BOTH stuck with the 32-bit memory ceiling. Remember the old advertising slogan "Try it, you'll like it?" I think you'll LOVE it. R. Scott McDonald B738/L Information is anecdotal only-without guarantee & user assumes all risks of use thereof. January 23, 201313 yr Yes XP10 would be a new challenge and maybe even fun but like movie sequels I would forever be comparing it to and trying to make it like FSX. Personally I don't have the time or ambition. Do what I did... If the demo looks at least intriguing, pick up X-Plane 10 and use it as a little diversion. I do all my serious flying on FSX, and X-Plane is nothing more than a snack so far.... but as I snack on it, I'm learning it's nuances and differences. I'm slowly thinking about actual trips to take in X-Plane, and every now and again tweaking or learning a keyboard command to help myself out. I'll grab a plane and do a quick circuit around the pattern, or grab one of the fighter jets and do some high-speed valley runs... Bit by bit, I learn a more of how the sim works. When the time comes to actually use it for "production" flying, I'll have had enough exposure to it all to not feel like I am swimming with lead weights on my ankles. (*I'm also doing a lot of airport scenery development with X-Plane and WED - a nice creative change, considering X-Plane's default airports are about as plain as government issued cheese.)
January 23, 201313 yr Remember the old advertising slogan "Try it, you'll like it?" I think you'll LOVE it. Yes I believe you, but...don't wish to allocate time into a new direction currently as I'm too busy w/ everything else! I'll be trying for sure but just not right now ;o) Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. January 23, 201313 yr Well I've only played a bit with XPx at home, but I had a chance to fly a friends sim that was running 64 bit and the visuals are stunning http://youtube.com/watch?v=mR2kdyz3w8Q He's got it up on three PC to split the visuals. To be fair, we use hardware cockpits so no need for an NGX package , but hands down you can't touch the XP visual environment with FSX or P3D (I'm still flying P3D as I don't have two mor PCs to do my views...... January 24, 201313 yr Author The "Beef" is still in development! It's happening day-by-day at Laminar, whereas no further work has been done on FSX's "underbelly" (the basic flight sim platform) for about six years... Ultimately, I believe that it's likely that we'll be forced to migrate to xPlane - if no other reason than x-Plane will work better the newer your hardware is... while FSX doesn't give a good payback for higher end components, and suffers from the 32-bit prison in terms of 4GB maximum memory floor that is a non-issue in 64-bit x-Plane. Also X-Plane can load a lot of the textures work to your graphics card, another huge plus. R. January 24, 201313 yr Commercial Member Yea the FSX BEEF is PMDG, ORBX, Flight1, RealAir, Carendo, AccuSim, UTX, FTX, GEX, REX,AFX, EZScenery, EZDOK. Opus, excetera, excetera. Give me all of those in XP then I'm all in. Cheers jja Jim Allen[email protected]SkyPilot Software home of FSXAssist / P3DAssist
