I feel your pain- but you are clearly flying at a totally different level than most of us - you are "at the max"...

I am similarly conflicted about ditching the GTX690 and buying a pair of 4GB msi GTX680s. That's just nuts. So I'll 'make it work' with the GTX690. I plan to ask EVGA for help configuring xPlane to work optimally with XPXG

I am shocked about the Level III Dongles. I paid $30 for the XPlane USB HASP KEY.

Hope you find a way to fly XP some day ;)

The USB dongle you are talking about is for FAA certification. It is not the USB you can use in place of the DVD.

If you want to run X Plane without the DVD, just mount it on a virtual drive. Many have done it.

GoranM, the USB dongle, which makes XP the Pro version, is needed in order to activate the project on a cylindrical screen feature. I need a dongle for each PC running XP's visuals, which is my case is 3 PCs... 3 x $750, just to enable a needed feature. I'll stick with FSX which has the undockable windows feature builtin.

As I've already stated, I am building a 225 degree wraparound home cockpit based on a Cessna 172. After researching what would be the best way to make XP work on such a setup, I have discovered that I would have to build 2 new PCs so that each projector has it's own PC for visuals and a 4th PC for the instruments. We are talking about $2,000 on the PCs alone.

On top of that, I need to purchase Level III usb key dongles for EACH PC. At $750 per dongle, I can safely say I'm folding and sticking with FSX.

Go IMAX, it's only one projector and it's a curved screen...

I wish it was $30!!! I think LR should make another level for us enthusiasts who build curved screen setups AT HOME. The Pro version, which allows XP to project onto a cylindrical screen, also caters to the commercial users who will profit from their setup. This explains why the high cost. Why should I pay a royalty for a commercial license when I will not be using my simulator in a commercial or for profit setting.

Here is what's included with each Level III usb key:

1. Run frame-rate and joystick checks on startup, as is needed for FAA certification.

2. Allow you to select cylindrical and spherical projection, as needed for some big simulators.

3. Allow you to interface with real versions of the following GPS units:

Garmin 1000,

Garmin 430,

Garmin 430 WAAS,

Garmin 530, and

Garmin 530 WAAS.

4. License your simulator for commercial use (i.e., any use of X-Plane outside your own home or office). This license is also required for generating revenue, either directly or indirectly, using X-Plane.

I don't need 1, 3 and 4...

Oh well... sigh...

Efrain,

try emailing Austin about this and explain, in detail, what your intentions are. He may be willing to find some kind of workaround for you. He is very receptive to people's needs.

Yea Goran, I was thinking the same thing! I will do just that and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice.

:-( I knew this was too good to be true... Now that I was falling in love with XP 10 and was seriously making a 100% crossover from FSX, I have hit a major obstacle.

Folks, XP is the real deal and I highly think it's the sim of the future, but if you are building a full size cockpit with a curved screen, be prepared to invest a couple of thousand in just getting the visuals working properly.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. :-(

Hi BimmerCop,

On Linux, it's possible tu run several instances of X-Plane on one computer, with each instance sending image on a separate screen. I've done it with two screens, using two GPU. There was virtually no FPS loss. I tried only once with two instances on one GPU, and I was surprised by the very acceptable results. I will make further tests as soon as I can buy more screens or best, projectors. I still have the problem of cylindrical projection to solve. There are some good software for that, for example Fly Elise Immersive Display, but they all run on Windows.

Here is the thread with technical details:

http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?showtopic=44217&pid=487759&st=0entry487759

Speaking of Windows, I don't know OS very well, but maybe is it be possible to do the same with some tinkering. I've never heard someone mention using this solution for X-Plane-Windows, just someone said that could be done. Any windows experts here ? That would be great, because the question arises quite often from people building visual system for their sim.

Hi Pascal,

Ok, let me get this straight... I already am using Immersive Display Pro for image warping/blending. Does that mean that I don't need the cylindrical projection output from X-Plane? In other words, this X-Plane option is basically a builtin image warping feature which isn't needed if you already have another software doing the job?

If that is the case, then I might still be able to use XP 10 and just need 2 PCs to complete the 3 PCs needed for the visuals, since I already have an extra PC available for the instruments! Please tell me this is correct...

Is this a sliver of hope I'm seeing? lol

Sorry to hear that Efrain. What about Nthusim. Could that software help you? I don't have much experience with wraparound screens, the wife would NEVER let me make one for the house regardless of how awesome they are!

Cheers
