Holy Smoke Batman- X-Plane 10 Global in 64-bits!

Featured Replies

Hi Pascal,

Ok, let me get this straight... I already am using Immersive Display Pro for image warping/blending. Does that mean that I don't need the cylindrical projection output from X-Plane? In other words, this X-Plane option is basically a builtin image warping feature which isn't needed if you already have another software doing the job?

I didn't try the professional X-Plane keys, but in my understanding, this is exactly what it does. The home X-Plane version has all needed network capability built in, and can syncronize as many instances/PCs as you need, one beeing master and the other slaves. It synchronizes the views as well. Just install Immersive Display Pro on each PC and you're set. You don't have to buy a full version of the sim for each PC, 30$ USB keys are available: http://www.x-plane.c.../store/landing/

If that is the case, then I might still be able to use XP 10 and just need 2 PCs to complete the 3 PCs needed for the visuals, since I already have an extra PC available for the instruments! Please tell me this is correct...

Is this a sliver of hope I'm seeing? lol

Sure, X-Plane is designed with that kind of config in mind. This is still a bit expensive for me though, and Linux will help me a lot to setup a "cheap" mutliview system.

FYI about the cockpit, I have found out that the best custom gauges creation software available for X-Plane is... Planemaker !

P.S: I've even seen someone run X-Plane on three networked computers, one Windows, one Mac, one Linux. Go figure ! :D

Since you guys were talking about FSX's poor performance and CTD's etc. ( we all know the problems FSX sadly has) I realised what I truly like about XPX. It's so easy to setup! ( sounds crazy i know what with people yelling that they can't even set their keybinds with xplane's "difficult UI") But to be honest, I love the fact that the rendering settings menu is all there is to it. Just set it up, check that you get smooth framerates and off you go! Don't have to fiddle with .cfg tweaks that are unique to every system, no CTD's due to old coding and overall just very fluid experience from the start. I can really concentrate on flying and also on some scenery development on the side, aswell. (Which BTW, is also alot easier with X-plane's tools  )

I hate to admit it but I think that logically xPlane will be the sim of the future. I'll probably give it a go when the 64bit release goes live. Cheers jja

The demo and purchase versions of X-Plane permit you to run 64-bits today, if you opt-in for the "beta" release and not fully-supported by some of the third party vendors (yet).

Here is a very quick and dirty 32-bit video from X-Plane 10.20 Beta 11

Landing at San Diego (KSAN) Visual Rwy 27

The plane is payware EADT x737 as is the FMC computer (the FMC is by Javier Cortes). Because the FMC hasn't been upgraded by Mr. Cortes to 64-bit (the plane IS) - this video is filmed with X-Plane 10 in 32-bit mode. Both 32 and 64 bits install when you add X-Plane to your system, so you can choose which one you want to fly every time.

Please watch in 1080p high-definition at full screen for maximum effect. IMHO, the visuals alone in XPXG (X-Plane 10 Global) are a game-changer. The airport buildings was a free download from X-Plane.org.

Nice vid! When did the x737 go payware?

You're right! I think the x737 is 'freeware' not payware! My bad!

I did have to pay for the specific FMC for it (Javier Cortes makes 2 license 'flavors' of his FMC program, 1 is "universal" and the 2nd is x737-specific. 20 Euros PER license. I went with the 737. Thanks for the kind words on the video. It was a 'quickie'.

There are now 150 different paint liveries available for the x737. I fly DELTA VA so I got the Delta livery... The roads are incredible, and the sun sparkling off San Diego bay as you cross over Mission Bay - pretty cool!

And this is the -32- bit X-Plane in this video. Javier is working on the 64-bit version of his FMC, once that's done, I will likely fly exclusively 64-bit.

The x-Plane Desktop Manual goes into some great depth explaining the nuances of their many rendering options, and how those options can be adjusted to accommodate the gamut of systems from bleeding edge to older machines with slower graphics cards. They do make mention within the manual about some settings requiring Direct X 10 capable cards.

I'd never given Xplane more than a second glance because, frankly, graphically it looked like crap. Clearly that's no longer the case but before I take the plunge would like to know:

- no download version in the works?

- is the Global package 64 bit?

- is trackir fully supported?

- any talk about occulus rift support?

Sorry, I know the information is out there if I look but at the moment I'm what's known as 'time poor'.

1. Only the demo. The full version is 80GB's.

2. Yes

3. Yes, although I'm not sure if it's FULLY supported. It's like asking if an FSX aircraft add-on is fully supported in P3D.

4. Someone else can answer that one.

Download versions? Highly doubtful - the global edition is an 8 disc DVD9 set. Juuuust a bit too much for download distribution.

64-bit? Any and all versions will be both 32- and 64-bit once the 10.20 beta is complete. You can opt into the .20 beta right now if you want to evaluate. The demo can be downloaded with this beta code as well. It really does open the memory doors and improves the capabilities of the platform nicely, should your hardware and OS be copacetic.

TrackIR? I'm not a TrackIR user, so I can't speak to that - but I have heard that it is at least functional.

Occulus What? I've never heard of Occulus Rift, so I'm completely clueless on that one. Wow. Am I getting old?

Edit: Oops - Goran got there first! :)

Yeah but you added a bit more detail than I did.

BTW, Occulus Rift is a new VR headset in development. It was demoed at the latest CES, but there's still a ways to go before it's released.

XP10 sounds hopeful for a new base platform. I guess P3D taking base code to 64bit is out of the question? If so, then geez it's time to get on board (users/3rd party devs) w/ support. This discussion is definitely making me think mega multi core and lots of ram as there appears to be a reason now. I have patiently waiteted for a new Haswell build from Cord 2 Quad and now I am going to look hard at more cores than just 4. Perhaps that means less need to go crazy w/ overclocking and have a nice quiet machine not on the bleeding edge of failure from over-volting!

Thanks gents. Will download the demo when I get a chance and take it from there.

Apparently dev kits are being sent out now. And all reports I've read say it's amazing with games like skyrim, so flight sims should be stunning.
