January 31, 201313 yr Shame on you for shaming me. Look, my post may have sounded condescending, but sometimes it hard to sugar coat the truth. The OP should have asked for guidence from ORBX before he did what he did. They would have pointed him to the guides, which are not hidden or random. If I have a question on a product I have for FSX and cant find the answer I do what I consider is the most logical thing, ask the developer, simple. So far you've shamed two people and I've only shamed one (the shamer). Looks like the greatest disgrace lies with you my friend. Anyhow, why should someone have to go out of their way to visit the forum for information which should be included in any decent user manual for all software? All addons I've seen do this.

Get over all the shame and disgrace, oh great bone collector as your profile says. As to your last paragraph all I can say is, life is tough and no developer is perfect. Sometimes as a consumer you need to do a little leg work to find the answers, thats why some devs have forums, so you can ask questions and get support. If thats too much work then so be it, maybe their products aren't for you. I'm no big fan of Orbx, but at least they offer a forum to ask and find answers to questions. January 31, 201313 yr You guys don't know what frustration is. Try taking up golf. You will learn what frustration is all about. At least in FSX, you stand a chance of becoming somewhat satisfied. Not golf! Amen! For me, missed approaches in golf are the rule, rather than the exception. If only the greens had a localizer and glideslope for the ball to follow in flight! Interestingly, many of us now play golf with the assistance of a moving-map-equipped GPS. Mine is very useful. It will tell me within inches exactly how far I have to travel from my present position to the pond, bunker or briar patch where my ball just disappeared... Never had a CTD on a golf couse, but plenty of "stutters" in my swing... Jim BarrettLicensed Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic, Avionics, Electrical & Air Data Systems Specialist. January 31, 201313 yr Everybody needs a little time away... I get frustrated too, but never let the little problems defeat you or cause you to lose complete interest in the hobby. Somedays I too want to go to the window and shout like I lost my mind. It might help to take breathers for a few days. Engage in something completely unrelated to Flight Sim (version of your choice). This might be a little extreme, but sometimes I set aside days to do nothing, but learn something new about scenery design or aircraft design and also set aside days for flying only. Go at it hard with flight plans, bad weather, system failures, and challenges. Or find a place you have never seen before in real life and take a free vacation. Best wishes! Keith Guillory
January 31, 201313 yr Commercial Member Run the sim correctly and dont try to extend it further than it was designed and it works like a charm. Hmm I wonder if installing 350+ payware addons is extending it further than it was designed. I think my problems have increased when I've got more addons. But yea like said lesson learnt, won't keep all my addons installed at the same time anymore.
January 31, 201313 yr Moderator Hmm I wonder if installing 350+ payware addons is extending it further than it was designed. I think my problems have increased when I've got more addons. But yea like said lesson learnt, won't keep all my addons installed at the same time anymore. What I was refering to was more along the lines of not using extended LODs like higher than default 4.5, higher res textures above 1024, and cloud density above the default max value. Start doing all that and mix in demanding addons and its a receipy for problems. Addons themselves are not bad, not most, some maybe. The sim was designed for them to be used since they included an SDK. The problem is not all devs have the same skill level in designing and those with a lower skill level sometimes produce products that dont work as well with FSX and can expose problems with a users hardware set and other addons being used at the same time. Combine that with what I mentioned above and you can have problems. i've been using FSX for years with a boatload of addons and have no issues at all like I see posted here all the time. But, I dont extend my lod radius, use textures that are bigger than 1024 or 32bit, and fiddle with the cloud density settings. Any addons that cause problems that I cant fix I get rid of. All that being said, no OOMs or CTDs and FSX runs like a champ. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
January 31, 201313 yr Hmm I wonder if installing 350+ payware addons is extending it further than it was designed. At what point does it become cheaper to fly a real plane? Frame rates are incredible, the flight model is spot on, real world weather all the time with perfect depiction, scenery is plentiful and attractive and generally plausible, and the lighting is amazing with every object casting shadows. ATC provided by real people without a subscription. All your real world charts and other third party stuff work exactly as designed. OOMs only apply to the pilot, and you can only crash to a desktop if you're really really good. Occasional hardware failures can be annoying, but that's nothing new. They all run fine no matter what your computer specs are. Immersion is total, but suspension of disbelief might be a problem if the aircraft doesn't act like you're used to in the sim. Unfortunately, weather cannot be turned off, customized, or set to a theme. Crosswinds are a fact of life, and you don't really have an option to fly from somewhere else, only fly at a different time. You'll always be using real world time. There's no realism slider for easy flight modes, although the aircraft are almost always easier to fly than in a sim. There is not a No Failures mode. There's probably not an autopilot, and time compression does not exist. Choice of aircraft may be limited, but they're all made by third party developers, except for a few the pilot builds himself, and those are generally third party kits. You'll probably be limited to GA aircraft. Despite its drawbacks, it's probably the most fun you can have. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! January 31, 201313 yr Wow, that's a lot of trouble to go through for a game or hobby. IMO. I'm a pilot and i certainly love Flight Sims and go back and forth between X-Plane on a mac and FSX in Windows. I guess I've been lucky, other than the post I made earlier about one new model I just installed. I admire your dedication. I have changed (upgraded) computers twice since the launch of FSX and had one C drive system failure requiring a new install of window and of course everything linked to registry is KAPUTS. By taking the time to setup a backup system, I have only limited amount of reinstall of a few items to get my FSX back up and running. This may seem like a lot of trouble but have you ever had to reinstall FSX with its hundreds of commercial and freeware addons and make the various tweaks to get it to purr properly? Then you would know the misery of which I am referring. No, its actually not much trouble. I didn't start my full backup until I had most of my current setup established. My setup includes, Orbx, FSAddon, REXv2, UTX, GEX configure control panels all working in sync with each other flawlessly. I also now use Norton360 Backup to monitor my setup and make ongoing backups when my computer is idle at night....I sleep well. Its no different for my extensive home video and digital photos which are also backed up...I would think any user that has home digital and photos would want to take the time to ensure they are full backed up. January 31, 201313 yr Commercial Member At what point does it become cheaper to fly a real plane? Hah yeah I bet with the amount of money I've spent to this I could almost get PPL here, just don't have time for that right now with all my college studies going on & nearest airports are pretty far away form this place, maybe in a couple of years when I move to some proper city for uni things might change. Yeah I guess so, I have huge mess of addons from all kinds of developers, don't know what combination in the end is causing all these problems or if it's related to something else, impossible to find out anymore as most of these problems started a long time ago. But yeah I hope reinstall will solve these problems, and if not I have everything valuable backed up on external hard drive so even full reinstall of OS isn't a problem if nothing else helps.
January 31, 201313 yr I feel bad for people who force themselves to put up with tweaking instead of flying and have continuous problems. Exactly, people push machine beyond what it designed for. Perfer flying and building scenery than tweaking the computer to run things beyond what it designed for.

Gotta stir things up for fun now and again =D. Really I think that with the number of products they've released they are just being sloppy not including uninstall info with the product. They are also sloppy in other areas of their scenery design as some people have pointed out in other threads. I like their sceneries but they need to pull finger with a few things.
January 31, 201313 yr Think of it as an old steam engine that needs "tinkering" everyday to keep it in good running order! Enjoy giving that TLC... Clive. Edited January 31, 201313 yr by firehawk44 Image removed. Far exceeds 400KB weight limit (yours 1.08MB). Clive NorthropOEDF
