A new (NGX) version of the wonderful MD-11

What altitude bugs?

Yeah, I too am interested in this, coz I've not seen any altitude bugs.

Tabs, you could not have explained PMDG's case on this particular aircraft fairer than that.

People buy what they are familiar with.  Let's face it, unless you fly FED EX, UPS or one of the few Asian carriers that still operate the MD-11, the majority of the flight sim community won't be interested.  Hell, I flew on the thing back when AA had it, actually flew on it a few times and I didn't buy it.  No desire; in my mind it wasn't a popular plane then and sure as hell isn't a popular plane now.  Disagree with me all you want, but if it ain't flying, I ain't buying.  And that's the demographic in the flight sim nation.

I agree with this. Though it does make me wonder about PMDG's development of a DC-6 which flies in the face of this logic. And I can't believe someone would buy a DC-6 before buying their MD-11.

The difference is that there were gaps in the development cycle that are now filled.  It's not an issue of opportunity cost, rather an issue of making money where none was previously made.

The DC-6 is a lighter interim project that is meant to fill the gap between the major developments to keep the teams tasked with something.  They are not deferring resources to work on it, rather, as resources become available, they can move to the interim project.

The teams were originally idle at various times during the main project's development cycle, and are no longer idle.  As such, by releasing a new product, regardless of the aircraft type, money is now being made where money was previously not made.

What altitude bugs?

"AT or BELOW" being interpreted as "AT", it also stops all VS and then immediately starts again. Also "Min Prof" numbers don't work. When you enter min prof my MD11 will have the entered altitude at the rwy threshold.

Ships are cooler that you think.

The NGX outsold the MD11 within an hour of release? Wow!

The Md11 is the best addon ive ever had. I love it more than the NGX even though the NGX is far better in realistic touches of wear and tear and has an easier loading method.. Still I just cant help myself, the Md-11 is such a beauty, I just cant stop flying her.

Do you guys have any clue what kinds of aircraft alot of ppl would like?

I know theyre not gonna make any Airbus aircrafts per now, but perhaps the classic 737?
I think the classic 737 would explode in sales. I really miss a NGX-quality classic 737...!!

I could go for a set of nicely done classics, too.

Unfortunately, that's in the video, too.  Robert mentioned that they saw no likelihood any of the classics -100 through -500.

I see in your sig that you're from around Stavanger - nice!  I miss that place!

I guess if PMDG made cars, Minivans would outsell exotic sports cars...because thats what people are more familiar with.

That's true. But I also think there's a sweet spot for slightly dated planes. Putting aside the J41 which was specifically limited in scope (i.e., no "study sim" features), I don't think people have an interest in a recently out of production plane that was never that possible. No one is going to break sales records on a L-1011 either. But, something really old like a 727, or a DC-6 or 707 that reaches "classic" territory, that's something else. To put it in car perspective: you might buy a 1965 Chevelle, but you aren't buying a 1978 AMC Gremlin.

The MD-11 is a great plane. And, even I can't remember the last time I loaded it up. Sad, really...

Yeah I can see that, but to not fly somthing simply because it wasn't a big seller in real life, you might miss out on some great experiences.

We are talking about two simming philosophies here I think. One is simulating the business of it, and one is simulating the flying experience. Translated to cars. One is simulating perhaps a courier or taxi service...a Minivan would be more practical here. One is simulating the 'driving experience'...the Sportscar would fit well here.

So yeah even with great well selling classics like the Chevelle, which is a fine car by all means...but lets say your other choice was a Jaguar XJ13...only one was built, it crashed, it was rebuilt, with a few replicas made. Very rare, and very exotic...by all reports powerful, and very fun to drive. There is no 'wrong' choice, but experencing somthing like an XJ13 shouldn't be frowned upon simply because it is so rare.

Lets say PMDG goes into the corporate turborprop market. They plan to do a Beech King Air and a Beech Starship.. Are you telling me people will look at the Starship and say..well it never was a big seller, I won't buy it. As a trained pilot looking for a thrill, I would say...give me the Starship. I guess if I were running an air taxi service, I would say give me the King AIr. LOL I guess it comes down to who is paying the operating costs. There is now 'wrong' way here, we can enjoy both in this great hobby.

Cheers

TJ

I bought the MD11 late, last year actually, i haven't used it a great deal, i don't like the older visual style, going from the NGX to the MD11 is quite a shock.

I have removed it from my FS installation and NAS, i don't see me ever using it again; which is a shame because i love the aircraft, i often see them on a Monday morning flying Lufthansa cargo into Manchester.

The simulation was amazing...but i am afraid to say it's really unusable after the delightful NGX.

No plans to update the MD-11, sorry. I can't show you guys the exact numbers, but the NGX *far* outsold it within like an hour on the day we released it. Obviously we do like the airplane ourselves but it's just something that didn't work out the way we'd hoped with the wider simmer market. Keep in mind too that the majority of our market is not on this forum posting - the sales numbers are what tell the story for us, not a forum thread of people saying they'd buy an upgrade. Sorry.

Well, by and then I take the LevelD67 out of my hangar...

Of course the graphics are out-dated now, but in the prospect of the coming 777 I still like to fly her.

From the 777's profile I fear that the new bird will be hard competition to the MD11 regarding long distance flights...

Huh? He said that about the classics when he was in Germany? How could that be? There are no released 737 classics that are anything special. (I love the CS 737 regarding looks and animation, but not so much system wise)

I really would have thought at least the 300-500 range would have been a popular product. Specially given that those aircrafts fly with the CFM56 only (as far as I know), which makes it even easier to replicate. Oh well, after the 744V2 and DC6 is out, im reeeeally curious of what theyr gonna make next.

Hmm.. Maybe Ifly will make the classics range then?

Did u live in Stavanger in your past?

Can you give more detailed examples that I can try to reproduce? I don't remember ever seeing this as a problem.

Yeah, it was mentioned at the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th video, if I recall correctly.

As much as I wish it would happen, I don't see it happening.  I have the CS and it drives me nuts from a systems perspective.  The Wilco is decent, but a killer on frames.

I did, sort of.  I had a friend in Hommersåk, so I would visit her and stay there for a few months at a time.  My family is from somewhere up north, but it's some tiny town and I'm not close enough with them to visit (plus, north of the AC, I'm not sure I'd want to - haha).
